Sometimes, we hear from customers who believe our favorite hobby is dying, citing that young people simply aren’t interested in model trains. Thankfully, we know from the ScaleTrains™ Road Trip™ that the future of the hobby looks bright.
Take it from Nick Kolankiewicz, a 20-year-old from Chattanooga, Tennessee, who says the future of the hobby is thriving, especially among the N Scale community.
We recently sat down with Nick to discuss his modeling endeavors, where his love of trains comes from, why he believes N is the “Scale of the Future,” and asked him whether or not he believes in the myth that the highly-detailed models of today are preventing teenagers from getting into the hobby. He also shows off his new Rivet Counter™ N Scale CSX EMD SD40-3s, his personal favorite models to date.

I was honored to have scale trains have an interview with me and get my input on their latest N scale locomotives that have been released. I have countless scale trains products from locomotives to rolling products and I absolutely stand by everything they produce. They absolutely nailed these locomotives!

He's 20 years old. He started HO since 12 years old (8 years ago) and just got into N scale 1.5 years ago. He's 20 and he already "bought" 20+ locomotives and countless rolling stocks. Can anyone confirm that this is a realistic purchasing power for a "young modeller" nowadays? I'm surprised no one addressed this in the comments.

One of the things I’ve notice recently at shows is that more younger people are going towards N scale as opposed to O & HO. It’s an interesting trend to keep an eye on.

In my younger days, n was just cheaper especially with new cars reaching 40-70$ each in ho and higher for o scale. I sold most of my ho recently to get back into n scale some.

as a kid, I think is the fist bug that bites, then stating the layout just getting the excitement going , from there the dream comes too

I model CSX same as you except I have my own layout which I'm still building.I don't have any scale trains locos as of yet.I'm on my own as I don't have anyone to help me at all. No clubs anywhere around me. I do model N scale.

Awesome to hear! I love the fact that I can model CSX with such a variety of locomotives they used to have and still do have especially with the fact that the primary scheme used to be YN2. So I get a variety between all of my locomotives even with different paint schemes yet still being CSX

I modeled HO in the beginning….. then moved to N later. Then later again back to HO again! Now that I’m 60 next year… I’m day dreaming about O now, maybe the scale is growing in size because my vision is getting worse with age…. lol, yep maybe!😢

Welll, the difference is somehow you guys FORGOT THE BEACON on top in the N scale version....as in it don't work. Where as the HO version does have a working beacon, even though its programmed wrong and doesn't actually, blink (I have a BN SD45 Rivet Counter) but does some weird pulse thing. Club got some of the new SD40's from the current run and they too have the same mis-programmed beacon. Club is HO scale but I am N scale....kind of an odd one out LOL.

With the Scale Trains SD40’s the sound is absolutely amazing. They’re actually quite loud compared to the tier 4 gevos which is actually very prototypical of Scale Trains to do!

I'm of the mind that the hobby isn't dying, but is in a bit of a weird spot at the moment. A new equilibrium is being established, dictated by the need for affordability and conservation of space. So yeah, N scale is looking likely to dominate the market. I'd be into it myself, but I love putting together model kits too much and HO still has a sizeable surplus.

I was at a the WGH Indy show this past February. And I saw a lot of young people. And N was the attraction along with HO. No one seemed to really want O. Even though Lionel was there with a booth.

What's your opinion on this 20 y/o person having bought 20+ locomotives and countless rolling stock? I don't think it sounds like a realistic purchase at least to me.
