If you like model railways, you’ll love “The Vale Scene”. In this video we visit Pendon Museum to see two model railways; firstly “The Madder Valley Railway” dating from the 1930’s when everything had to be scratch built, because the model railway industry as we know it today was in its infancy. Secondly we visit “The Vale Scene”, the most lifelike model I have ever seen, even those with no interest in model railways will be amazed by the skill of the model makers who are creating this stunningly realistic window to a time fondly remembered. The Museum was first opened to the public in 1954, developing since those early days into the wonderful miniature world that can be seen today, where visitors are transported back in time to an idyllic English country scene. There is plenty more to be seen at Pendon including a beautiful recreation of the “Sea Wall” between Dawlish and Teignmouth. A visit to Pendon is likely to be enjoyed by all family members, visit pendonmuseum.com for more details. Due to its age “The Madder Valley Railway” runs on a limited number of days during the year. “The Vale Scene” is still under construction, giving visitors a chance to see how it is made.

Stunning layout. That take of wagons the loco was pulling about 7 minutes in was huge, the hours of work and the commitment to produce something like this is unimaginable! Also those thatched cottages in particular look so real - I’m blown away by how good this is. Superb footage 🙂

+pega17pl Hello Heinz, I just noticed I used my music testing channel to reply last time. I use a different channel to test the Royalty Free music I purchase for use in my You Tube videos. Although I purchase the right to use the music from reputable sources, less than reputable companies file disputed third party matched content notices. By using a different channel I can get some idea of the problems these tracks are likely to cause, as I do not wish to put this channel at risk of copy right strikes. It is very unfortunate that the likes of Francia Jazzline Orchestra distribute their music through multiple suppliers, because the You Tube match content sweep only recognizes one supplier who will be informed of the matched content. This means a video with say 10 music tracks can end up getting a large number of content matches, It takes a lot of time to dispute all the claims, every time the claim is withdrawn because I have the correct license. There is one exception I am disputing at the moment, some outfit called EFFE Productions have issued a take down notice against a video that has nothing whatsoever to do with them as I shot the video and the music was purchased with the correct licences from a very reputable source. The wording of the take down notice is very intimidating, designed to put people off filing a dispute, but the bottom line is there is nothing to worry about providing everything is honest and all the correct permissions have been obtained in writing. You Tube takes a very dim view of organisations that file erroneous take down notices, as do the companies that supplied me with the music. I will try to remember not to use my other channel to reply to comments in future. Best Wishes ... Tim.

The buildings on this railway are on a god level, they absolutely rank as the most accurate and realistic looking models I have seen. The nice thing is that this railway stays on evolving, as is visible in the video they are still adding new buildings and there were parts removed for freshening up the scenery or repairs. I also like the vast landscapes which have realistic proportions.

One of the "classics" of British railway modelling, re-creating a long-lost era between the Wars which my parents knew. The scale allows true "railway in the landscape" perspective. It recalls to me some of the drawings of the period by the immortal cycle-touring artist Frank Patterson, one can imagine him cycling through this landscape. Thank you for your painstaking and sympathetic recording of this unique model railway.
@Timsvideochannel1

Hi, its the best model I've seen, I say model as opposed to model railway because it really does capture that "railway in the landscape" atmosphere, not a motorway in sight. It reminds me of days spent as a child watching first generation diesels climbing Rattery Bank in Devon, OK not steam, but they could make almost as much smoke, even today on the bank one can look around at a scene that hasn't changed, same old farm houses, rustic fences, even the odd horse and cart, only the modern track, trains and road vehicles give the date away. Pendon is so good, one can actually imagine leaning on a farm gate gazing at the farm workers going about their business on a warm summers day. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video.

As wonderful, and inspiring as ever - I don't recall seeing either 'Joan'/ 'Shannon' on the Wantage tram, or indeed the bright green Madder Valley saddletank before. This is the standard we should all aim for - even if we don't attain it. Superb. (Oh, and I still use John Ahern's methods for my own locomotives. True 'oldie but goodie stuff.)

Excellent video Tim. I plan to visit Pendon Museum in a few years time when I come all the way from South Australia to visit your lovely country. Since I was very young at about 2 or 3 years of age I've wanted to go to Britain and visit the rest of Europe. Hopefully one day I can do just that. Absolutely love this model railway. It always pleases my eye when I see it. I'm apart of the British Railway Modellers of Australia and besides my interest for my own railways here in SA, I do have an immense interest for British Steam. Especially the Great Western. This place is on the long list of places and railways to visit. Thanks for sharing this with us. I've also subscribed to your channel. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your family. Greetings from South Australia. Cheers Caleb :)

Hi, Pendon is amazing, you wont be disappointed if you visit as part of your planned trip to Europe. Britain is probably the best place in the world for preserved working steam, plenty of choice. For awesome railways, Switzerland takes some beating and if you time things right Germany and Poland put on some great main line events. I have ridden the suburban trains around Sydney, also Puffing Billy and the Kuranda Railway. I am likely to visit Australia again as my son lives in New Zealand and Qantas usually have the best flight deals. I took a look at your channel, there's some interesting stuff there, so I subscribed to take a better look later. Hope you make it to Europe, best time to visit the UK is probably around May or June as most things are up and running without being swamped by tourists who are only able to take their vacations during school holidays. Take care and seasons greetings from the UK.

Visited he museum some years ago just to see the Madder Valley Railway.Was given two J.Ahern's books for Xmas previously which not inspired me to lay a full narrow gauge railway in my loft but many of the buildings and methods used in those two books were incorporated in the layout

Hi Colin, a visit to Pendon is great way to get ideas and see what is possible, those two books you mention are from an age before model shops stocked everything to make life easier. I have just returned from "The London Festival of Railway Modeling" where both the latest methods and old ways are used to create outstanding layouts. I wonder what J.Ahern would have made of a 3D printer?

Someone commented that it isn't really a model railway. No, it isn't: it's a miniature of rural England, modelled on the Vale of White Horse, that has a railway running through it. It's an England that was lost, for better or worse, 80 yrs ago. I live not far away & have visited a number of times. It is a beautiful work of art. This video is very well done, but still doesn't do it justice. Visit & let your imagination take you to the foot of the Cotswolds before WW2.

"The Vale Scene" is an extraordinary model railway. Because it's not overloaded with stuff the eye has enough time to investigate thoroughly the individual objects. You see individual scenes are made with all the attention and love to detail, even the horse breeds are correct. Great, trains move in model scale (if I'm right).

+pega17pl The man who started this railway wanted to preserve the beautiful landscape of The Vale of the White Horse, This was the way he chose to do it. +pega17pl Hello Heinz, you must be tempted to visit this model railway now, I don't think I could ever make a video that does justice to this outstanding creation. I think you would need a whole day to take in all the detail and appreciate just a fraction of the love and work that has gone into creating it. I hope to visit it again on a day when it is not busy and make a longer more detailed video, as like you I think I have missed a lot more than I captured.

I remember over hearing a conversation between a very old boy, a local chap, and one of the folks involved with Pendon. When the old boy was asked what he thought of it he replied it's really wonderfull but.. but what asked the modeler, well replied the old boy, " there's not enough shit on the lanes! He went on to tell that the horses, cows going to milking, the sheep being moved between fields and being herded to market, all left a huge amount of poo on the roads!
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, the old boy's comment was about right, even today, herds of cows using the lanes to get to the milking parlours and tractors with mud on the wheels make a right mess of lanes. We all like to sanitise our memories of the past a bit.

Indeed a wonderful everlasting diorama. But it isn't really a model railway anymore as the train has become just an insignificant part of a vast love affair of replicating scenery in ever finer detail. Not much of which you can appreciate, as you now need a telescope to see whats in the distance, and most of it is now in the distance..... Sorry guys but you've been building this thing so long, you've forgotten what a model railway is......
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting comment and I can understand where you are coming from, but it is called the “The Vale Scene” suggesting it is a recreation of a scene rather than just a model railway. As you say it is so big you need a telescope to see the other side, just like the real thing, fortunately one can walk all round admiring the work of the modelers. The railway is just a part of the whole scene, I think Pendon museum has kept to Roye England's (original creator) vision of recreating his favorite parts the Vale of the White horse in the 1920's. You are correct to say it is not a model railway, it's much more.

What a place! Some people must have worked a whole deal to make it! Too bad that it looks so old and dusty today! They probably struggle with resources to maintain this properly. So you did all the work, on your own time and money, but they own the copyright to your work?! Why would you accept such a deal? As for the video itself, the images are great; you do focus very little on the railway part, though. There are very few trains featured; very little motion. Perhaps, you have a part-two video for this layout?!
@Timsvideochannel1

Hi, this is the gold standard of model railways, please click on this link, I think you 'll find some of the information interesting - pendonmuseum.com/about/ There are two main layouts, the first by John Ahern, a model built at a time when model railways had to be built from scratch, because the model railway industry simply didn't exist. The layout is old and worn, I believe it is only run on special days or for groups. The second layout "Vale Scene" sets out to capture a rural area of Oxfordshire in the 1930's before modernization swept away many of the rural scenes featured, this model is more about the scenery the trains ran through than it is about the trains, although the trains themselves are something special. It is hard to keep layouts like these dust free although the "Vale Scene" is well protected with very little dust in evidence, John Ahern's layout has been around for a long time, it must be a nightmare to keep in good condition, although the guys at Pendon do a good job. I made the video, with help and permission from Pendon Museum to post it to KZfaq. If ever you get a chance to visit, I'm sure you'll find it a rewarding experience.

I appreciate both what I see and the video which allows me to see that - such videos might be my only chance to see this layout, for instance (I live too far away in times way too troubled for our own good for me to actually be able to visit the place in person).

@hntrains2 4 жыл бұрын
@@nicokremers7150, of course it is old! (That it is so is even stated in the description of the video, which is there for all to see, you included) I said, "it looks so old and dusty" to mean that, with better resources, new life could be blown into the layout. If that meaning did not get through, it is very likely my own fault (this I am using now is not my mother tongue); I apologize for that!
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 4 жыл бұрын
@@nicokremers7150 It is a model landscape of which the railway is simply an integral part. Roy set out to make a record of a time he felt would soon pass into history, this model certainly achieved his aim.
