While it is 23:00 (11:00 PM for example on a Tuesday on baker island and Howland island in the pacific ocean. It would be wednesday for the majority of the planet earth. And It would be 26 hours later at 01:00 (1:00 AM) on thursday for Kiribati's line islands. Thus it is 3 different days for the planet for those two hours.

Don't forget that the Time Zones aren't exactly straight either, and some have their own Time Zones. For example, I live in Saskatchewan, Canada we have our own Time Zone but our zone will either match up with Mountain Time or Central Standard Time depending on Daylight Savings because we don't use DST.

I am still a bit confused about the midnight to one 1clock position. If 1 am is Saturday morning and IDL is 12 am Sunday, does that mean there is a 23 hr time difference at a point on earth at all times?

So if we're in the 1 am zone on this picture and we travel toward the dateline, are we going to pop into a new day?
@MrJuvefrank4 жыл бұрын
Yes. A lot of planes that take off from Los Angeles on Friday nights land in Australia on Sunday mornings because of this. Likewise, planes that leave Tokyo and land in Los Angeles land before they take off if you take the time change into consideration.

One single question tho So exactly where the earth and time zones are located in this diagram.. is the entire earth technically experiencing the same day for exactly one hour here? And once the IDL passes 165°E Into 165° W then everybody under the same day except that single line? And so fourth for 23 more hours and then again for one single hour everybody's on earth is experiencing the same day just for one hour? Or is there always at least one timezone a day ahead [ the IDL at midnight] And possibly stupid question I apologize but the earth is rotating east I imagine ?
@quantumxfluxmd68212 жыл бұрын
Basically Is there ever a time where everybody on earth is experiencing the same day? Or is there always "atleast" one time zone that is a day ahead

Dir sir. This is a great presentation, thank you. Ech time zone is 15° wide and represent 1 hour in time. Is stretches 7.5° either side of the zone dividing line. Zone 0 is from 7.5°W to 7.5°E. Sir in your presentation zone 0 is Prime Meridian only, just straight line, which is totaly wrong.

So who gets to start the new day,by date, first? The Western Hemisphere or the Eastern Hemisphere? I am guessing the Western. But tonight I look at "TimeAndDate" website and they say it is 5:55 pm April 14 in North Korea, but it is only approximately 5:55 am (same date) in NY. This makes no sense to me - they (NK) should be April 13th, no?
@mrfox2187 жыл бұрын
The eastern hemisphere, specifically the islands right near the international dateline. North Korea would be on April 15th based on the time you gave.
@shanejones88846 жыл бұрын
Mr. Fox's Science Classroom The IDL is more of a mess than this simple example explains. In fact, most time zones are a mess. The Line Islands of Kiribati (UTC +14) for example are at the same longitude as Hawaii (UTC-10) but are a full day ahead, China which is the 3rd Largest Country in the world only has 1 time zone (UTC +8)... There are 7 countries that use half-hour time zones, Nepal is UTC +4:45. The Diomede Islands in the Bering Strait are less than 3 miles apart but are on opposite sides of the International date line... So if it's 3 AM in Little Diomede on Monday, it's 12 AM on Tuesday in Big Diomede. Your example is if the time zones were at "ideal" longitude lines. Individual "states" (what most of us call countries), can make the time zones wherever they want and whatever they want... Good lesson though.
@FirebirdCamaro12206 жыл бұрын
The earliest day start is in Kiribati, the western islands are in UTC +14, despite being in the Eastern Hemisphere, they are still east of the international date line

I beg to differ with technicalities, especially if USA, the time zones may differ at state borders especially, or metro areas, so people living at those areas observe one time. In addition some countries also observe local time on quarter hour increments as well.

I loved this but I cant find lesson one and I don't know why anyone else
@MrJuvefrank4 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to believe that I lose an hour if I travel west. I'm going to ask a good number of pilots if that's true. You have the right to your opinion. God can reverse the rotation of this planet. In 1992, I liked boarding a westbound plane better than an eastbound plane because I like to get too much sleep better than not enough sleep. I haven't travelled on a plane outside my time zone since 1992. My earth science teacher said that if you leave Utah for Nevada you have to "relive" an hour of your life. When you said "lose" you implied the opposite of what my earth science teacher implied.

Time zones need to be revised by an expert because Scorpio constellation is atb300am whereas usually 500am here in Puerto Rico
@petertheunissen6453 жыл бұрын
The explanation is not entirely correct or at least confusing... the prime meridian (0°) is the CENTER of the 'base'-timezone, so there is -7,5° west longitude part and +7,5° east longitude part of the 0° meridian timezone covering the 15°.
