I captured up-close macro timelapse sequences of cockroach egg cases hatching and roach nymphs emerging! I think it's both amazing and squirm-inducing footage! Featured here are an American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) and a German cockroach (Blattella germanica).
Check out the other Ant Lab cockroach video, about how adult roaches jump here: • Cockroaches Can Jump &...
Thanks to Prof. Coby Schal & Rick Rick Santangelo for supplying the roaches! Thanks to Nicolás Galvez for assistance on this project.

The most interesting thing about this is how the egg case is this perfectly formed package that looks like it is made of the same thing as the cockroach's outer cuticle, and it's so neatly lined up with a precise number of young inside it.

It's funny because the great majority of cockroach species don't live where we do, it's only a hand full of species that are common pests. People that keep pet roaches usually keep more exotic ones like hissing roaches, dubias, Halloween hissers, porcelain roaches, glowspot roaches, domino roaches, harlequin roaches, question mark roaches, emerald roaches, and many many more. There's so many beautiful species in the hobby and some people never know about them because they only think of the pest roaches!

This reminds me of when mantis hatch from their egg casing as well. Way more chaotic but similar nonetheless. At least their heads look really similar. I've literally handled thousands by this point and have never been bitten. Anyone swearing they bite like ants or can actually hurt you is either misinformed or fear mongering. You can read Orin McMonigle's book on roaches; he's THE authority in the world on these insects and has spent decades studying them. He explains how and why they're not a danger to you. You LITERALLY would have to press a roach headline into your arm to force a bite that can't break skin. You have nothing to fear from a roach.
