This is the extraordinary and deeply moving true story of the million British horses who served in the 'Great War'. It is told using rare archive and testimony, combined with the latest historical research. The story begins with the mass call up of horses from every farm and country estate in the land. Brough Scott evokes the world of Downton Abbey as he tells the tale of his aristocratic grandfather Jack Seely and his beloved horse Warrior. He would become the most famous horse of the war, renowned for his amazing courage.
The British army hoped their illustrious cavalry regiments would win a swift victory, but it would be years before they enjoyed their moment of glory. Instead in a new era of mechanised trench warfare it was the heavy horses transporting guns, ammunition and food to the front line troops who were most important. Tragically a quarter of a million of these horses died from shrapnel wounds and disease. But the deep bond that developed between man and horse helped both survive the hell of the Somme and Passchendaele. Behind the lines an army of vets worked miracles to treat injured horses and keep them going.
The finest hour of the cavalry came in spring 1918 when - led by the warhorse Warrior - they broke through the German lines and helped win the war. But there was further heartache for the horses when the war came to an end. 85,000 of the oldest were sold for horse meat. Half a million were sold to French farmers to help rebuild the countryside. Only 60,000 made it back to Britain. Six black horses that survived the war together would pull the body of the unknown warrior to its last resting place in Westminster Abbey. But the most famous war horse of all to return in glory was Warrior. His story, like the million other British horses who served, should never be forgotten.

Not only did they play a vital role but they were dragged into a war that had no meaning for them, they were basically abused because of the terrible conditions and all. I wish people gave the horses more credit since they suffered for us.

Thankfully, there’s a lot of people who care about the animals of war. There’s a beautiful monument in Hyde Park London dedicated to this topic. It’s absolutely stunning. Of course, it won’t bring the animals back to us, but at least there is a saved spot to give thanks to them and remember them. www.google.ca/Animals%20In%20War%20MemorialBrook%20Gate,%20London%20W1K%207QF,%20United%20Kingdomg.co/kgs/z6ZGuc

They are honored on Veterans Day .....if you're truly honoring those who've died for the cause of Individual Liberty..... The horses have the same day as we do. Any Cavalrymen would probably agree. And to the other point animals we eat yes!.... Americans don't eat horses though...they have a special place in our society.

34:40 on Forgotten Weapons, a KZfaq page about rare and long forgotten guns, the host recently featured a “gun” from the late 19th and early 20th centuries specifically for executing horses. Looked like a 6” long brass pipe a cartridge was loaded into, placed against a specific part of the skull, and struck on the back with a the solid brass cap included in the kit.

We sent horses from NZ too. There were also mounted cavalry units in the Middle East I believe - including an Australian cavalry charge at the battle of Beersheeba. What surprises me is that the Germans didn't also have a cavalry?
@ErieRadio
@ErieRadio 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! The ANZAC mounted units served in the Middle East theatre of war. A large portion of mounted units on the Western Front were Canadian. The Germans indeed had Calvary/mounted units. Starting the war with 110 regiments. They ended the war with about 1/5th that strength. More details… exact units, organization, etc can be found here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_cavalry_in_World_War_I

I would have thought that city boys would have come in contact with horses quite a bit back then. All the taxis and carriages on the London streets were still being pulled by horses as not many people could afford to sell their horses and buy cars. There weren't that many petrol stations and the infrastructure wasn't ready for motorised vehicles to just take over. So I'm sure there were plenty of city boys who were very familiar with horses, may even have grown up working in stables looking after the horses for London's cabs and the carriages owned by the rich. There would have been drivers, blacksmiths, footmen, messengers who rode horses and more wealthy people who owned horses in London and on their country estates.

Is it a shame that this video didn't discuss the horses that the Cowboys and Indians used too?? I'm sure there's information out there, somewhere, about the horses used in the Middle East. You just won't find it, in a video about horses used in WW-1 Europe.
@char5992
@char5992 4 жыл бұрын
Mike S The british forces did use horses in the Middle East in WWI. And they often faced worse conditions than the horses at the Western Front. It's important to tell non-Eurocentric stories, as it was a world war, not just a European one (although the European powers were in the Middle East as well).

I wonder how important the horse is today in the military? This documentary shows some military horses today but possibly just ceremonial usage. However if a nuclear war happened and an EMP wiped out power and fuel supplies were disrupted, horses could be very important even now. Perhaps that remount section has more capability than this doco shows.

The complete heart break of that war….so many men and horses dead. Horses had no choice to be there.😢 horses have always suffered, killed in use in every war through time. Horses are so intelligent… so trusting and dependent on humans for safety and care when bred for domestic use or for sport or to make money. In modern times how humans treat horses is always debatable. Humans aren’t always dependable for their judgement, empathy or honor.

The Germans and Soviets used an estimated 6 million horses during WWII. Towards the end of the war the German army relied heavily upon horse and cart for transport as fuel was so scarce.

WW1 was the last war fought with a cavalry. They were made as useless by new technology as full plate armor was made by bullets.

No one absolutely no one should be pressuring horses like this. This is disgusting. There should be a holiday to recognize all animals that have died due to humans

Just imagine.. without dogs & horses, America would have likely lost ALL the wars. That old man was awesome too lol. "I just gave them all a little poke with my sword, didn't need to kill them" 🤣

How bout we end horse slaughter . We ship horses to Canada or Mexico, they go without food or water for up to 36 hours then are killed in in a humane way .

In modern times dogs are trained to be military important working dogs. War zones still need and depend on an animal.
