The attack on the beach in Crimea start costing very much to USA. A lot of ATACMS finished in the sea, really close to beach; ATACMS don't explode when colliding with water so Russian got this device (device that is inside the missile) intact and probably more than one. I think in some weeks Russia will know how to defend against these USA weapons.

Knowing the details of the guidance systems is paramount to focus on the right jamming frequencies and avoiding wasting energy to jam other part of frequencies. This gives a double advantage , making hit rate drop further and jamming systems grow in autonomy time

I do not claim to know how the missile and the guidance system are designed but I just think in terms of an airplane's black box that is reinforced so that it can be recovered intact after a violent mishap. That is not the point. What was shown in the video was a gyroscope, with some electronics behinde it. So the ATACMS are using a combination of GPS and Inertial Reference Navigation. If you get your hand on such a navigation system you can pretty much find all it's weak points. How does this system react against frequency blocking. How does the system recognize a spoof attack from the outside and how can we avoid it? There is so much to learn from this. If you manage to understand the system used exactly, you can invent countermeasures and all weapons with this or a comparable navigation system would be practically worthless.

I mean so what? It's a 40 year old ballistic missile design not a new stealth fighter. Knowing how the guidance works isn't the same as being able to stop them hitting Russian targets. It does nothing much to help them. Russia's air defences provably can't stop most subsonic cruise missiles let alone ballistic ones whether they know how they are guided or not
