With Covid-19 affecting timetables and services, I decided to try my first ever timetable challenge:- to travel on 2 trains, 2 buses and 3 Calmac ferries covering 82 miles on a 7½ hour journey. I visit Gourock, Dunoon, Isle of Bute and Rothesay. I try the three most popular Scottish transport methods around the Firth of Clyde.

Hello, just a wee note from a Scot who moved to Canada a million years ago (1965). I do go home to Scotland at least every second year. I love your videos. So down to earth and aimed at the budget travel. Keep up the great work. I was home two weeks ago and hope to get back next year. Great insights, entertaining, educational. Enjoying from Toronto.. Keep em coming.

I rarely comment on videos but I genuinely love your travel videos and promoting public transport. I do have a car but using it less and less so support to public transport is important to me. So thank you for your videos on this subject.

I was telling a few friends about this connection I did in Rothesay, from bus to ferry, and how this was the first time I had set foot in the town. They thought I was kidding as EVERYONE from the Glasgow area has been to Rothesay. Obviously not everyone!

Fun fact about the linkspan in Dunoon. It was designed for car vehicles boats and no car had ever used it. Sometimes in rougher weather they use a boat capable of car travel but the service remains foot passenger only.

I keep setting myself similar ferry challenges. My record so far is 3 different crossings (excluding returns because that's cheating) in a single day. 1) Guernsey to Herm and back with about 3 hours ashore. 2) Guernsey to Jersey. 3) Jersey to France. I reckon if I was really clever with the timings in the summer I could get 4 or more: France-Jersey-Sark-Guernsey-Herm and back to Guernsey-Jersey. But there are very few days when the tides would work in my favour.

These videos bring back childhood memories of sailing to Rothesay or Dunoon, though we never did the 'loop' like you did. I remember the Clyde 'Streakers' that went across to Rothesay and Dunoon (when Calmac's Dunoon - Gourock service was a vehicle service and not passenger only!). The newer Calmac Rothesay boats (which I want to call Argyle and Bute, but might be wrong) are nice though, we were on one about 13 ish years ago. I live much further north now but it's nice to see your videos of locations closer to where I was brought up.

I have myself have done this trip a couple of years ago but in the opposite direction, were the bus from Rothesay went on to the ferry at Rhubodach then straight on to Dunoon. As you seen the scenery from the bus from Auchenbreck to Dunoon was just fantastic . The other trip I wanted to do was to Portavadie then over to Tarbert then carry on the CalMac down to Lochranza. But this only operates from October to March than carry on through Arran and back to Glasgow via the Ardrossan ferry. But this was cut due to the storm that was over Scotland in March and then we went down in lockdown. Many thanks

Hi - The Tarbet/Lochranza connection is on my Timetable Challenge #2, but at the moment we are requested not to leave the Glasgow area because of a spike in Covid-19 cases. Once things settle down, I plan to feature this. Challenge #2 has 1 train, 3 ferries and 6 buses. A nice little day trip.

I was watching one of your other videos were you went to Fort William and then on to Inverness, but as the bus back to Glasgow from Inverness was full and you had to get train I have two ideals for you incase something like this happens again and you need to catch the train the first is to invest in a senior railcard which gives around a third of your train ticket which cost £30 a year or for 3 years it’s £70 giving small saving, the other a a website called ‘ splitticketing.trainsplit.com ‘ here is a example from Inverness to East Kilbride a open single is £59.70 and using splitmyticket website it’s only £50.27 and if you were to have a senior rail card this would drop down to £33.16 I hope you find this helpful. Really been enjoying your videos and your little adventures. I once did a bus trip,on the island of Lewis were you had to book the bus by phone the day before. You are bringing back memories as I once did trip on the Shetland island and got bus from Lerwick to Tingwall airport where again you had to book 24 hours before hand but it was not a bus it was a taxi but you only paid a small bus fare as it was subsidised by the council as a link to the airport.

Several years ago that trip would have been easier, as the buses used to actually go across on the ferry. I think they had to cease that when legislation came in forcing the use of low floor buses, which, because they sit too low would ground getting on and off the ferry.

@PlanesTrainsEverything
@PlanesTrainsEverything 3 жыл бұрын
Ha ha! The tent is a good idea. That timetable challenge had a point of no return. Once I reached it, there was no going back because the timetables wouldn't work out for me, so I had to keep going in the same planned direction. I'm looking at an 8-leg challenge at the moment, but I'm waiting to see what happens with Covid-19 travel restrictions. I think we will be restricted to **essential travel** only, so we'll see.
