In today's video, we will feature the just released Timex Marlin Automatic wristwatch. Following up on the tremendous success of the Marlin re-issue from 2017, the automatic version takes a step up in case size, but still retains the vintage vibe.
The watch is powered by the reliable Citizen/Miyota 8215 automatic movement, with a 40 hour power reserve and 21,600 beats per hour.
Come take a look at the all new automatic Marlin:

I own a Citizen automatic watch with Miyota 8200 movement and I have been noticing the 'Miyota stutter' and I was worried that I got a defected watch, but coming across this video and the information about the indirect driven movement has relieved me greatly. Your videos are always immensely informative. Keep up the good work!

I own a timex watch from 1980 and it still runs. I'm amazed as it's never been serviced. I don't wear it now because it has a tiny face. However I will never get rid of it because it brings back so many memories every time I look at it.

Thanks for the detailed discussion of this lovely watch. That's a thoughtful comparison with the Bambino. So pleased to see Timex continuing to offer these iconic designs, especially with honest to gosh mechanical movements. The Marlin autos are definitely lookers but I'm really partial to the Marlin hand winder with those vintage proportions, champagne sunburst dial and especially those early 1960s arabics. So classy!

Sorry, but the dial on the new automatic doesn’t compare to the dial on the Marlin Reissue. Not by a long shot. I can’t understand why they couldn’t have released the same exact dial on the new 40mm automatic. The new dial is nice, but it’s kind of ordinary. They’ve gotta release a 38mm Marlin Reissue Automatic. That’s the selling point right there! That beautiful champagne dial with those unique Arabic numerals. Come on Timex, you can do it!

Marc, I'll take my Orients over any Timex all day every day. Had WAY too many Timexes with QC issues right out of the box in the last 15 years. Stopped buying them several years ago. I got my first Timex in 1963, I was 7 years old and in second grade, and that launched my fascination with mechanical watches. It cost $8 with a bracelet, or you could spend $9 and get the same watch on a gray leather strap. I can't do one of anything so I bought both...one as my daily banger and the other as my Sunday-go-to-church watch. :-)

I kind of wish they had the numbers on the dial like the 34mm manual re-issue Marlin, but it's still a cool watch, and a MODERN size. I have a 7.25" wrist, and 40 is about as small as I want to go now (40 is fine for a dress watch, 42 is ideal for every day watches). I have a 38mm Victorinox from almost 20 years ago, which looks a bit small now. I really love the dome on this watch, and would have loved a paused look at that angle, but that's a minor complaint. I definitely am leaning toward the silver dial, though I might switch out to the black strap offered with the gold/Snoopy versions. Thanks for the in depth look on the movement and straps, especially their features, quality, etc. I learned a lot.

Maybe not in the watch community, but they can definitely compete with the ill informed general public, unfortunately. I agree, the Bambino slays the Marlin in every way imaginable, but the Timex brand is embedded in US consumer consciousness. Tough ladder for Orient to climb.

I didn't say otherwise. I think you didn't really read my comment carefully. But, I do however think that many people if not most know that Long Island is part of NYC and the state. On the other hand, I have no idea what the culinary competition in your comment is about other than to obliquely suggest that we all have different tastes. But I think the issue in the OP is not about tastes but rather value. In that regard, I agree with the OP. As a person who owns five Orients, three of which are Bambinos, they are rock solid, beautifully designed, wonderfully engineered and some of the best timepieces I own. Timex reliability for me has been horrid over the last 15 years and I stopped buying them a few years ago. Their QC is awful with several purchases failing right out of the box. Go to their website and pick almost any watch at random (maybe with the exception of the Marlin) and read the reviews. You'll see what I mean. But my original point was that Timex has far greater brand recognition than Orient even if their watches are IMO crap.

I can't wait to pick up this watch from Timex. I am happy to see Timex going back to automatic movements. I think this is a great step that Timex is doing and it brings back excitement to the brand and makes you look forward to future releases. I am happy that this watch has a Japanese movement over a Chinese one. Just personal preference. My only complaints about the watch are the size and the strap. I would prefer the sizing be 38mm but luckily my wrist can still pull off a 40mm watch. Also, while the strap is of higher quality why does have to be made in China despite the leather coming from America. Again just a personal nitpick. When I buy it I would just remove the strap to something USA made. Overall I can't wait to get my hands on this piece and people should be exited for it. It offers another alternative for a price of this style and category. Who doesn't want more options?

Kind of strange hearing Timex being referred to as a quality brand. My first watch was a Timex (circa 1957). It was the watch that parents would buy their kids knowing that they would most likely be lost or damaged. Over the years, Timex watches were sold everywhere (drugstores, gift shops, etc.) for less than $20. They were ok, but never considered anything but low tier. Thankfully, consumers don't remember Timex the way I do.

haha you're probably right! but wouldn't it be cool? It is just a bummer that "american" watches aren't truly american at all. I'm from Detroit area, so everyone loves Shinola, but the only thing they do in Detroit is assemble the watches; all the parts are made elsewhere. I feel bad the US has lost its horological history: timex, bulova, hamilton...

Dammit, I had a slight hope it would be the 9015. Would definitely have bought it then, but it's possibly too much to ask for at the $249 price point. Makes it hard not going for the Bambino instead, especially with the price difference.

I still prefer the Marlin 2017 reissue. Like you I would've preferred a 38mm size (I think they can fit the movement into a case) since this is more of a dress watch. However, love the dome and the Citizen movement. Also, I personally would've loved a larger date window taking up the entire 3 o'clock index or not have it there. I have pretty good eyes and even that date window looks really small for a watch this nice. But it is a nice watch!
@tonywong8134
@tonywong8134 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, but you won't sell to as many people with 34mm. I think 38mm is a good size that appeals to most people. I think at 40mm you lose your more loyal buyers.

That's because there weren't much supply. Selling out does not mean something is in demand. They had a limited run of the 2017 Marlin, so selling out was likely.

Has anyone heard of fitting an auto in the winding 36mm Marlin. It is a seagull st 6 movement and you can buy them in auto as well as hand wind. I wonder if the case is thick enough for the rotor?

I have the 34mm Timex Marlin; it's an ok watch, but I just didn't warm up to it after I bought it. Still, this automatic version does look tempting; I'm wondering if I should sell my Marlin and get myself this watch instead. I better make a decision soon though, I'm sure the automatic Marlin will sell out in no time.

Movement in a reissue might be of dubious origin to consumers, but it looks like Timex know precisely what they are doing. Not to sound like a fanboy, but I have certain amount of trust in this company. Mainly because in the end you still don't pay that much. For most people who are hugely into watches everything Timex makes is considered to be very cheap. Timex makes cheap watches. Cheap watches of good quality, with great history. What else could you want? IMO, for the price - hard to beat.

I spoke too soon and need to set the record straight! Upon more careful scrutiny [ including looking at some really nice pictures at Worn & Wound's review ], the Timex Automatic seems to be significantly more well-proportioned and harmonious than the Bambino. Moreover, because of the smaller dial, it likely wears more as a 38mm would. Therefore, I hereby declare that I would NOT pick a Bambino over this watch. Glad I got that off my chest.

For 250$ a miyota 9015,Sapphire, or 100m depth rating. One of these upgrades should have been included.
@islandwatch
@islandwatch 5 жыл бұрын
A 9015 can't be had in a watch under 350 usually. Sapphire in a dome like this would be ludicrous in price. And what do you need 100M WR for in a dress watch? I respectfully disagree with that sentiment.
@RD-dm9vc
@RD-dm9vc 5 жыл бұрын
@@islandwatch the movement could be NH35 & depth rating could be 50m, but a sapphire (even flat) because as you said this watch is somewhat for the younger generation. Which live a more active life and could use these upgrades. Edit: Also thanks for replying so fast.

I would prefer NH35 over the Miyota 8215 and 9015. NH35 cost the same price as the 8215 too. Also, I own a watch with all 3 of those and it was exactly $250!

@@DJogdog NH35 over the 9015 ?
@DJogdog
@DJogdog 5 жыл бұрын
The NH35 has bi-directional winding, is hackable (the 9015 is hacking too, but not the 8215), greater power reserve, doesn't have the nasty indirectly driven second hand which angers me on my 9015 because I like the minute hand to perfectly align with the minute markers when the seconds hand is at the 12, doesn't have the noisy rotor, if you needed to replace the movement it would be cheaper to buy a new NH35 over 9015, and its made be Seiko to boot! In terms of accuracy and and reliability I can't say that one is better than the other. But I have a higher affinity for Seiko as a brand so I'd be biased anyway.
