Install Remove Replace How To Change Vin 3 engine. This should also work for other years and models, I have listed some below.
1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004
Ford Escort, Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique, Mercury Cougar

Hi I just liked your video, im installing the timing belt on a 2000 ford focus exactly like this one ! I have messed up the timeng and the car starts fine but it's doesn't go over 40 miles per hour now thanks to your video tomorrow im going to do it once again! Ok I've done my timing belt with NEW GATES belt, tensioner and pulley last week. My car runs pretty good and quiet but I went to check the belt and tensioner guide mark 3x. When installing the belt I placed the belt at the middle of the cam sprocket because the belt is not wide as the sprocket. After a 10 min running the engine, the belt moved to the right a few millimeters . I check it again in 3 days the belt moved to the left side 2-3 millimeters to the edge. The tensioner arrow originally was pointing at the center of the guide but 3 days after together with the unusual position change of the belt, the arrow is now off the guide 3-5 millimeters tighter because its towards the right. Looking at the belt while running... I can see slight side to side, maybe because the belt is not 100% straight and I hear very low noise sounds like a pulley plastic or metal rubbing maybe. My ears is placed near the belt. Thanks! What do you think? It's the stupid Gates Timing belt kit for 2002 ford focus

After you removed the timing bar and pin, you mentioned you were going to rotate the engine by hand to make sure the timing was correct. My question is, how many times did you rotate and did your timing marks on the cams line up?

With having to remove the camshaft alignment tool, how do you torque the crank bolt without it just spinning? Did u leave the crank pin in while you torqued the crank bolt????

Do you need to mark the cams? Since the are not keyd to the shaft? Doing this job on monday . No special tools where i live so tryna figure this out before!

Do the cam seals need replacing often? Mine (timing kit/water pump) will be done in a few months or so.

referred to your video in addition to A1AUTO video...made my marks as recommended and counted # of belt teeth between marks(2 and tripple checked and transfer marks to new belt and double checked # of teeth as well as lengths of distance of both..turned manually engine several times. Started engine and engine was sputtering , running rough and stalled in drive. threw up my hands swore and cussed and was getting ready to disassemble to see where or where l went wrong..@#$%...reverted to changing Bosch plugs with old original motorcraft plugs which came with car(the car is 16 years old has 70kmiles and changed to Bosch at 50k)..there after the car purred like a kitten and ran better than b4.GO FIGURE???.the old belt was still good...but l guess replacement was good as insurance..due to age

Hey thanks for the great videos. I have a 2000 Ford Escort 2 liter ZX2 Zetec DOHC 4 valve/cylinder with variable exhaust valve timing. The belt on my engine broke. I have read that this is a non-interference engine, so I should be OK, right ? I have the cam alignment bar. I made one from 3/16 flat stock plus a standard hack saw blade to shim out the slack. I bought the crank alignment pin on Amazon for $10 + shipping. I am installing all new parts. I see you skipped the part about torquing the cam wheel end nuts. I know I need to remove the alignment tool bar then hold the cam at the hex castings with an open end wrench. What is the torque for the cam end nuts? Also, is it of any concern whether you put #1 piston at TDC on what may or not have been the top of the compression stroke befor the belt brok or the top of the exhaust stroke before the belt broke? I believe that this does not matter at all as the ignition timing is apparently done from the cam position sensor? Thanks Bud, You are a Saint

Joe Magnan Well putting the crankshaft at TDC marks and putting that alignment pin that you bought from Amazon in the hole and you should be fine there, no issue with intake or exhaust stroke. At home for the weekend cannot get torque until monday. Should be non interference, even if it is an interference engine , you might as well put belt on, people do get lucky and have no damage.

I just bought a Focus with 114,000 miles and don't know if the belt was ever changed, what mileage should it be replaced at and if it slips will I bend valves?

Now. I just replaced one that the timing belt went bad on with a hundred twenty five thousand. If you have the engine code of 3 which is the 8th digit from the left on the VIN it's a non-interference engine you don't have anything to worry about. I just use the flat file the line up the timing marks on the back it will only go in there one way. And then line up the timing mark the keyway on the crankshaft straight up 12 O Clock.

You don’t need to mark anything. That’s what the timing tools are for.

if u do use channel locks, rap a rag around that gears so not to put any burrs on the gear, so wont chew your belt up
