15 Minutes
By now we thought that there would be
Jetpacks and flying cars
Robots to do the cleaning up for us
And help with the shopping.
We’d all be famous for bit
That’s what Andy Warhol said,
Thought we’d all get our coloured head
Well the truth would rock him
He may be surprised
To wake up and find
That we have weaponised
Humiliation
In the future, everyone
Everyone will have
Their 15 minutes
15 minutes of shame
15 minutes where they
Are unforgivable.
Pick up your pitchfork and your torch
We’ll go hunt the monster down
But keep an eye out for uneven ground
We’ll turn on you if you stumble.
Don’t need perspective or a heart
Leave humility at home
Welcome to the glasshouse, hope you brought your stones
Are you ready to rumble?
I am scared to write
Anything that might
Upset my own tribe
But never mind, cos
In the future, everyone
Everyone will have
Their 15 minutes
15 minutes of shame
15 minutes where they
Are unforgivable
Irredeemable
Inexcusable scum
Fit only to be strung up
In the village square
I will see you there
I am scared to say
Anything that may
Be taken the wrong way
But fuck it, baby
In the future, everyone
Everyone will have
15 minutes
15 minutes of shame
15 minutes where they
Are unforgivable
15 minutes
15 minutes of shame
15 minutes where they
Are unforgivable, irredeemable
Inexcusable
Unforgivable, irredeemable
Inexcusable
Unforgivable, irredeemable
Inexcusable

OK, so some of my favorite bits about this... He references Andy Warhol - In a "Pop" song. He's wearing shoes, cut his hair, and left off the eye makeup - in a song about conformity He comments on being afraid to say anything offensive - and only swears once He makes a comment about being in the town square with everyone else - when we all know he has been on BOTH SIDES of that damn pillory He's playing the electric guitar - in a song involving the ideas of popularity "Welcome to the Glass House" - Yep, he's in it too folks, and he brought his fn stones. ALSO THE KIDS ARE AWESOME Tim's fake-happy expression THE KIDS ARE AWESOME They throw a rock at Tim's head. THE. KIDS. ARE. AWESOME. There is so much perfectly right with this song. The only con? I was really expecting it to be 15 minutes long. GLAD TO HAVE YOU BACK TIM!

Those kids are PRETTY well choreographed. I confess that I never expect to see a bunch of young teens rocking moves & facial expressions on stage like that. I was genuinely more interested in the visual story than the song, itself.

@@jbrisby The burden of proof is on you now. I've done my due diligence in trying to find what ever it is you are talking about and have multiple accounts of him being proclaimed (by others) a big Dawkins fan, but he has been featured on his website and I have also found easy quotes, just by Googling, of him praising Dawkin's work. I agree in the sense that some of these quotes say that he doesn't hold Dawkin's as an icon but that doesn't mean he's 'irrational.' I suggest going to these three links and ctrl + f and doing a search for Dawkins and read a bit around the quote. Hope to hear from you soon! www.theguardian.com/stage/2013/sep/28/tim-minchin-interview-matilda-jesus "Minchin's own rants are driven by rationality. He is a humanist, a believer in the enlightenment, a fan of Richard Dawkins, whom he has described as 'one of the greatest evolutionary biologists of all time'. Dawkins is keen on him too - he has Minchin videos on his website." __________________________________ newhumanist.org.uk/articles/4756/tim-minchin-it-just-happens-that-im-right "'...when people ask, ‘Are you a fan of Richard Dawkins?’ I say, ‘No, I’m not a fan of anything!’ The more I label myself, the more people can go, ‘Oh, he’s just...’ and discard the ideas."' _______________________________ www.newstatesman.com/helen-lewis/2014/10/tim-minchin-satirist-who-ran-out-upwards-punch (Background) "In one such incident, a blogger called Rebecca Watson mentioned in a video diary that a man had made a pass at her in a lift and that such behaviour made her uncomfortable. She was rebuked by no less an atheist hero than Richard Dawkins, who wrote a sarcastic letter to an imaginary Muslim woman, 'Muslima', telling her not to complain about forced marriage and female genital mutilation, given 'the suffering your poor American sisters have to put up with. . .' (Dawkins later apologised, in passing, in a blog post about another subject.) After the incident, Watson suffered months of online abuse and harassment." (This is the important quote from this source) '“Look at poor old Dawks. I don’t care whether Richard says outrageously anti-Islamic [things] - not because I don’t care about Islamophobia: I do care if someone’s racist - it’s just that he’s not an icon to me. He’s just a guy who wrote a really good book.”'

As an exmormon, this hit close to home for me. I lived with constant shame over trivial nonconformities for so long. I was sure everybody (especially leaders, and even more importantly, God) could see into my soul and could easily uncover rancorous truths about my private life. I lived in constant fear and shame for more than 30 years. The lyrics and choreography of this music video remind me of a dream I had after I learned from my dad about Mormon excommunication as a teenager. I dreamed that this kid in my class who wasn't following church standards was led to the front of sacrament meeting in shackles, flogged in front of the congregation, and formally cast out. That was not far off from the way I felt as a member of the church. In my experience and the experience of my friends and family, Mormon-mandated repentance, disfellowshipping, and excommunication are medieval, barbaric processes of self-flagellation and often public shaming that promote conformity and faith in an unjustifiable premise. Thank you, Tim, for your open treatment of the scourge of shame!

As a kid, and I guess even today when that moniker applies only to my maturity and demeanor and not my age, I was always very confused and disturbed when people would cry when tears didn't seem to be the appropriate response. "Tears of Joy" they would say. I understood crying. One of the few things i did understand, actually. Never once had, or has, a tear escaped my eyes because I was happy. Haven't thought about the concept of this for a long time but I think today I just caught a glimmer of what they meant. What an incredible experience this song, this video, this expression of humanity was to behold. Tim, thank you for this. I wish i could shake your hand, or give you a hug, or just let you know how appreciated this was. I thought I had cried my reservoir dry more than 2 decades ago but to my surprise today i find out I'm still physically capable of shedding a tear. The children were so imperfectly perfect. And that ending. Tim watching his newly made music video with sighs and stooped shoulders. There is more honesty and authenticity in this "comedic video" than has been shown in the entirety of Trump's presidency. Don't change that part of you for anything. Please.

thirty years ago, we started our child in dance class. She liked it I think. Did every imaginable sort of dance. Ballet, tap, jazz, Irish dance, modern (whatever that means) and belly. You could always tell, you couldn't help but make observations and comparisons about who the naturals were. My daughter wasn't a natural but still, she liked it all. It was a parental cliche to stick your kid in dance class or gymnastics or chorus, soccer, baseball and on and on and on. Has Minchin done a musical critique on parents who are cliches? You watch these kids, in this video on the stage and see that they are the cream of their crops, they probably come from all over but towards the end, the girl up in front, in the center, you can tell she's the cream of the cream. I am just reminded of those days when we would attend dance recitals and school plays to watch our kids do entertaining and gratifying things and notice the really talented ones. Minchin is an anomaly...an entertainer for sure but also that guy back in the fifties and sixties who would jokingly shout out "What is Reality" in a philosophy class. He's definitely going to end up a curmudgeon in his old age (it takes one to know one).

You totally rock. On a day of depression.. 15 minutes of your songs and I will get out of bed feeding better. Thank you Tim Minchin.... I found you by mistake one day on you tube and your song " you grew on me" struck a chord and I was hooked. It would be nice if my husband had a little of your humour.. If you ever bottle it, I will make the first purchase. He is lovely, but he can be a bit hard to live with and humour does helps the day go by! I appreciate knowing other people in the world know how to lift the spirits of others when we need it. You even made him laugh when I played your song to him! Have a great 2024.

This is an amazing song by Tim, highlighting the current trend in the media and by people to simply obsess about mistakes a person makes and demand some sort of witch hunt and punishment, and the fear of people not wanting to upset others around them, and Tribal mentality, and so much more! Great stuff!

@@genericname8727 Saying something is 'less about x than it is about y' is not the same as saying 'it is not about x'. Far from it in fact - it's literally a tacit acknowledgement that it is, at least partially, about x but not as much as it is about y. Tim is a wordsmith and comedian - I have no doubt that his choice of wording and the meaning implied by them are deliberate.
