After watching this, it now became so obvious to me the difference between euro and Chinese looping technique. I can see here the Timo is basically looping with his arm with minimal body weight transfer and hip movement. Whereas when I watch XX and ML here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frCFhK-Fm6iWmmg.html , they use a full arm swing and weight transfer. Additionally, the Chinese seem to loop faster with a lower trajectory.

Yes, Europeans play slower but with more spin. That's why Timo is very successful. Even the best players in the world had a hard time getting Timo's loops back on the table.

@@peterkajan6645 that seems intuitive! I wonder has anyone measured the RPM on timos "slow" loop compared to Ma Longs loop? I wonder how much difference there actually is. The reasons why I ask is, is in my experience the spin affects the trajectory of the ball less when it travels faster.

@@taumax I don't know if anybody measured the rpm, and I agree that the spin affects the trajectory less when the ball is going fast. The fact that ma long's shots are complete cannons does not mean that there is little spin. Keep in mind, that DHS H3 is a very tacky rubber. It grips onto the ball very strongly so the spin is also quite strong. But nothing beats Timo's loops *chef's kiss*

Really good video to analyze the technique!! Thanks for the slow-motion. Without it it would be possible to track those fast movements and learn from the properly. Is it just me or does Timo move his pointer slightly upwards on the rubber when he's playing a forehand top spin ?

I admire both , sometimes the hardest shots are done by the reciever , specially @ 8.50 . Excellent vid , a pleasure to watch and re-re-watch.

Interesting to see how his technique changes over the years to adapt from 38mm celluliod ball and fresh glueing to 40mm plastic balls without fresh glueing. When you look at old matches of him you'll see the big difference.

Is it just me or does Dima's FH loop look off?

Having looked at it again, I appears to me that Dima's FH has no fore arm snap. It looks like his fore is angle with respect to his upper arm is constant and all he's doing is rotating around his shoulder. This is very similar to Harimoto's FH loop technique.
