Mara Wilson's mother was terminally ill and the doctors confirmed she wouldn't make it in time for the movie to be released. So Danny had them put together what they had and show it at the hospital, so that she could see her little girl in action. He's a great guy, really, when I first learned about this, I was in floods.

Another big difference from the book: at the end of the book, Matilda actually does lose her abilities. As it turned out, she was only able to do so because she wasn't being academically challenged in Miss Honeys class, so her brain had to make up for it somehow. But that all stopped once she was transferred to a higher, more appropriate grade, because now for the first time in her life, she's actually struggling, instead of having her smarts go to waste.

A little fact about this one..IRL, Mara Wilson’s mother was battling cancer during filming and unfortunately passed away. They asked Mara if she wanted to continue with the movie and she decided to keep filming to honor her mom. While Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman played horrible parents in the film, they became very close with her in real life and she was able to lean on them for support. I think this was also one of the last movies she was in.

Miss Honeys house is very different from the book. The main difference being that there is literally nothing in there besides a small camping stove, and two wooden boxes. Matilda didn't decide to help her just to get justice for Miss Honeys father. She also did it because Miss Honey needed serious help. There's a whole bit that mentions that the Trunchbull told her that now that she's an adult, she has to start paying her back for everything she did for her. The only money she had was a pound a week. The Trunchbull made her sign a paper that would redirect all of her paycheck directly into her bank.

"This is a horror film right now!" Yeah, the whole scene in the Trunchbull's house scared the ever-living f*** out of me when I was a kid. "Yo, she's superhuman!" That kinda supports what I said before, that I think the movie is really trying to play up the child's perspective in an unreliable narrator kind of way. Not that all the adults in her life (except one) aren't horrifically abusive, but the Trunchbull being superhuman is definitely how a big, strong, terrifying adult would seem to a child, especially if you add the whole Olympics thing to it. To a small child, an Olympic athlete WOULD seem superhuman. And the "I'm smart, you're dumb. I'm big, you're little. I'm right, you're wrong, and there's nothing you can do about it" bit that we get from two different adults is probably what it sounds like to any kid when adults say no without explaining why, or use the "because I said so" explanation.

Of course, the fact Matilda learns to read alone is a miracle but the french writter Marcel Pagnol knew how to read at 3 years old because his mother let him in his father's class while she goes to the market. I don't know if you're aware but the guy on the paint is Roald Dahl. If you think " Matilda " is dark you should see " James and the giant peach " who's an adaptation of another Roald Dahl's book.

Regarding that chalkboard scene; I had a theory when I was younger that Magnus was reincarnated into Matilda and that's the reason why she had her powers, and things play out in the movie the way that they do because Magnus' wish was to get revenge on Agatha, which his spirit did through Matilda.

My parents were always pretty lenient when it came to what movies we watched as kids. I remember going to see this in the theater. My mom thought it was too dark/depressing. I could watch most PG-13 movies at this age (I think I was 5) but Matilda was too dark. When I got older (an actual teenager) my mother still refused to buy it for me. I had to buy it myself. 😆

When Mr Wormwood said "Your 4!" and Matilda saying "Six in a Half" basically Government Educations can give a list of schools for a child to go to, but not by forcefully arresting them(no they will not arrest them for no reason, and its kinda not Illegal.), but then like telling them that the child needs education and to learn so they'll basically call the parents (Guardians or Parents) to see which school is best some far or near. (and Selling used cars that are Busted, Rusty, broken, engine failure, is kinda ILLEGAL to do for Unfair Prices. which Mr Wormwood did get what he deserved and knew that the police are coming.

I love this movie so much and I will definitely watch the 2022 Matilda the Musical Movie. Every actor/actress is wonderful, especially Pam Ferris as Miss Trunchbull, but another person in this movie we should be thankful for is Danny Devito. He is the true hero of this movie. Sure, Matilda is, but Danny deserves a lot of credit. He played Mr. Wormwood, narrated the movie and directed it. He took care of Mara when her mum had cancer, so her mum could see it. He put a copy together so her mum could watch it in the hospital. A true legend Danny is and so is everyone else in this movie and all the scenes are brilliantly acted.

19:03 You don't know the half of it. In the book Miss Honey said that when she was little her aunt Trunchball would make her wash by herself and then before her bath was over would come up to see if she'd washed herself properly - "And if she thought I hadn't washed myself properly she would push my head under water and hold it there." She would start shaking all over whenever her aunt came into the room after only one year since her father died. Took her weeks to build up the courage to tell her she'd rented a house - her aunt had told her she owed her a lot of money because she'd been taking care of her for years and made her sign an agreement so that her teaching pay would be sent to her instead for the next 10 years, she gets a tiny (as in really tiny) allowance from her once a week, she manages to get by though.

8:15 First off: at the time they filmed this, they actually were husband and wife. So what they did for this was put on a harness under the suit he's wearing, that connects to the hat, so when she tries to pull it off, he's holding it on with his whole body. So when you see her cutting the hat off in the next scene, she's actually cutting the wires from the harness off of the hat. The shot of the mom backflipping off the table wasn't her, it was a stunt double. And as for the cream tarts, what they did was set up miniature catapult seesaws, put a tart on one end on them, and essentially send them flying.
