In improvisation we all have our vocabulary and tend to say/play certain things over and over again because we know it sounds good and it works. Its not about ego or anything like that.

pretty sure 3:35 is a chromatic circle of fifths progression which is extremely common in all genres of music including jazz, so it makes sense that cory incorporated it in both solos

Seen this video so many times. That melodic world Cory entered from 3:00 - 3:45 is the sweetest melody I've ever heard in my whole life. I hate what his left hand was doing cos that was too good. Who in the world is this skilled?

@@michalmalicki9613 from a quick glance / listen it's sort of Vm/I > VI > IV > IVm. You get the sussyness / tension of the Vm/I, lovely rising feeling when we move up to the VI, feels like we're going to IIm but in reality we go to something close to that, IV, then the change to the IVm which brings such a strikingly 'nostalgic' feeling, true musicality on Cory's part. Beautiful progression especially seeing as everything has been quite sussy / grounded by the tonic pedal up until that point.

The beginning of the solo on the second synth is unbelievably similar to how TOTO used to sound in the 1980s (in my opinion). Also, I love the public singing these little phrases he comes up with later on (Freddie Mercury and Jacob Collier would be enamoured). Great job on your part.

this reminds me of zawinul. his technique is so supreme that he can just play anything at this point which gives him all the musical freedom - no need to show off!

Yeah, when Cory calms the initial dominant vamp -down at 0.58 he goes to that Zawinul feel and triadic vamp from which he ascends to heaven with his major9 gospel mastery like George Duke on expenses-paid vacation...
