Hello Shiny Crafty People and welcome back!
Today I’m going over the steps to make a simple quilt top with a layer cake. A layer cake is a packet of fabrics that are typically cut 10 inches square.
Here are some links to different layer cakes I bought on Amazon:
amzn.to/3vFCKQI
amzn.to/3PPEZYt
This makes it easy to create a simple and attractive quilt top because there is no cutting involved AND you already have a pack of coordinating fabrics. No need to fuss over which fabrics to use!
This pack was closer to 10”x10.5” which made these rectangles instead of squares, but it just meant I had to keep them going in the same direction. Not a hard adjustment.
Here’s the Frixion pen I used: amzn.to/3PSxDDC
In a future video, I’ll show you how to create the quilt sandwich to finish this project!
Until next time, stay crafty!!!

A black & white photo will show necessary placement corrections better than color. Great tutorial for introducing someone to quilting. Even after 45 years, I still find it relaxing to grab a layer cake or jelly roll and just stitch together. They make great charity quilts. Thank you for another quality tutorial. Another excellent video that has great clarity and timely tips along the way. Easily understandable by speakers of other languages. I have made quilts like this using old shirts, cutting squares that include pockets. Children especially love the pockets for their small treasured items and toys. Even special notes can be added to the pockets for little surprises. Even the button plackets can be used with a square of fabric behind then.

I know its for your business, but I'm so envious of your massive cutting table...to have that would be a dream for many of us, I'm sure! Loving your videos in NE FL! ❤️

I sometimes feel bad showing such a great table when I know others don’t have it. But then I like giving people inspiration too.

Thank you Tim. N.E. Ohio here 😊 I use sticky file folder labels to mark my rows: "Row 1 top" etc. The label would remain on after sewing that row. After placing your horizontal rows in the numeric sequence, it is easier to pick up and iron each row to nest left or right. Taking a picture is always a good tip. You can also look at the picture to see if the current placements work for your eye. As a garment sewist from a very very early age, learning quilting was a "do what works for you."

My daughter in laws baby shower is memorial day weekend and she has asked me to make her a bu 35:45 nny and daisy baby quilt. Ive never made a quilt in my life. I do alot of hand stitching and made a table runner and im working on 5 inch squares to make a fall table runner. I used to do what the big quilt machines do with my gramma and church ladies hand quilting a quilt. But ive never pieced one and have no desire, i hate all of the geometry and wasted fabric. But i could do this with smaller squares and then applique the bunnies onto it. But after the top im at a loss on batting and backing and edging. A 48 x 48 should be the right size shouldn't it. Im sure looking forward to the rest of the videos on this project!

You can buy packaged cotton batting 45”x60” or by the yard. I like cotton for quilts.

Layer cakes are usually sold 40 or 42 squares. Most of the time, quilters lay them out 6 x 6 if 40 squares (use leftovers for matching pillow); or 6 x 7 if 42 squares. Makes a good sized throw quilt.

If you're a real beginner, make a Sister Block quilt. Most layer cakes have at least 2 of each print. Separate them into 2 equal piles. Keeping them in the order they came in. Put singles off to the side. Take one pile and turn it upside down. Take top of each one and lay them on the table pretty sides up. When you get to the end of each pile, use the singles to make sure that you don't sew 2 of the same squares together. You can use a 6 squares in a row and 7 rows. That's called a 6 x 7 layout. Then just grab 2 squares and sew them together. You can spend HOURS trying to layout a top (yes from experience, I've been down that rabbit hole lol).

Hi, I have a question. I am apparently more dyslexic than I thought I was and I have a bad habit of switching things around, so how can I avoid that with this particular pattern you’re doing?

You can mark each place they connect with a colored marker. Will help you by having to line them up when you go to sew.

@@timothytotten9409 I think it will be a fun thing watching you suffer. I have my Grandmothers' treadle in the basement for 35 + years, cleaned it up to make Covid masks. Now I use it to mend clothes and make things for my Grandkids. I remember playing with it at my Grandmother's when I was very young. Give it a go, might be an interesting video.
