The monolithic saddle from Van Dykes Harms is no joke. I have a Suhr thinline that plays and feels amazing in hand, but sounded thin and sometimes even brittle. The bridge and saddle Ben made for me completely brought that guitar to life. Amazing guy to work with, too. We went back and forth for a few days on what I thought my issue was, what I had tried, what he could do and how his hardware could help. Dude was spot on. Cannot recommend him enough.

Quick random fact: Ben Is Leroy's son and played with him quite a lot when Leroy Van Dyke would go out for shows. Google "The Auctioneer" if you're unfamiliar with Leroy Van Dyke.

I have a Rutters on my Classic T that completely woke it up. John likes the Gotoh, but there are better options out there that improve his own guitars. The Rutters compensated saddles also have grooves, which make a big difference compared to the Gotoh. Once I replaced the Gotoh with even just the Rutters, it was night and day on the same guitar with the same strings.

About 5 years ago I was working as an electrician in the French Quarter on Royal Street. They removed quite a bit of original cypress wood over 200 years old and they were chucking it in the dumpster if the pieces were 5' long or less. These were obviously hand sawn and worked with an adze the outside of the wood had turned chocolate brown and averaged 1" to 2" in thickness with variable widths. So, I started grabbing some of the better boards and made a body blank that I want to make a tele out of. It is basically all straight grain and even though it is four pieces glued together I believe that once made into a body it will be extremely difficult to tell except if you look at the butt, so I plan to do a similar burst finish. That is if I ever get around to paying someone to make the body for me.

Look at Texas Toast Guitars in Colorado. They might do it. But they also have guitar building classes and you can do it yourself.
@oldengineguy
@oldengineguy 22 күн бұрын
Nice find! There’s nothing like material with a story. You can build a body yourself without much trouble. I took a class at the American School of Lutherie and it’s all about building a template before working on the actual wood you’re building the body with. And as another commenter said, other places will give classes as well. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of building a nice instrument yourself. My strat style guitar turned out awesome and I finished it much like Tim’s tele style guitar in the video. Go for it, you’ll enjoy it immensely.

Wow, best of luck with your build, that sounds like some killer wood. BTW check out the old "pancake" bodies from both the lawsuit age of Japanese makers and Norlin-era Gibsons, what you're talking about is exactly how some really killer, resonant guitars got made way back in the day. In fact, I was going to comment on Tim's monolithic bridge saddle because I'm thinking of putting one on my late 70s pancake-bodied Japanese Ventura tele. Congrats on your reclamation of some awesome hardwood.
@skullheadwater9839
@skullheadwater9839 22 күн бұрын
@@matthewmacdonald9851 I actually have 2 Japanese LP copies from the early 70's with those pancake bodies. The older one is full stock, could even be from late 60's and the other I purchased as a husk and just refretted.

I had Ben do a wood pickguard and matching knobs. Did the ashtray bridge and compensated saddle. But best thing I ever bought from him was a prototype guitar cabinet. Has side fins open back kind of an old Leslie front where the grill is wood all one pice. Loaded with a neo. I use a quilter micro and it is warmer than an old tube amp and with the side fins and front grill it really sounds like an old tube boutique with the total weight of less than 12lbs! Sharing your review.

Loooooove that you started with Neil Young! First observation is you could have cut the body thickness in half. And made it ergonomic, or as we called it in the day, slinky. Just ask the reigning master of the SG. Yes, the slide demon. The blond Gagoober, the Great Slidedeenie. You know.... That GUY! Even the lower horn could've been tapered to cut weight and add style. Sounds great, but I hate it.

Very sweet looking and sounding guitar! Interesting bridge saddle. It's a cool drop-in solution. Leo Fender had a similar idea when he designed the Saddle Lock Bridge back in the late '70's. A set screw locks all of the saddles together. It's on some of the G&L ASAT models.
