Join me for one of the world’s great train journeys. Travel coast to coast across New Zealand’s South Island, following spectacular braided rivers and clinging to the sides of deep glacial gorges gouged deep into the formidable Southern Alps. Dive right under the highest peaks in the 8.5 Kilometre Otira tunnel, cross high above wild rivers on gravity defying, spindly, wind-swept metal viaducts, finally our train speeds across the fertile Canterbury Plains to reach Christchurch.

I went to the North Island back in the late 80s , loved it , I've never been to the South Island , and I think I'm too old to gravel now , So I'm quite content to watch on my P C , Thanks Tim ! Many have told me that the South Island is prettier than the North Island , I can see why !

Hi, North and South Island are quite different in character although both are beautiful in different ways, South Island has wonderful scenery and North Island has the Volcanic parks. Today, there are very few passenger trains running on the South Island and those that do are run for the benefit of tourists. A trip on the TranzAlpine is the highlight of many tour itineraries to South Island, it is such a pity that passenger trains no longer run to some of the other wonderful destinations where fright trains still operate, the line to Dunedin is spectacular, yet the view is only available to handful of freight train drivers. I'm glad you enjoyed the trip over the Southern Alps, it is an awesome train ride.

Hi Peter, I look at the terrain and marvel at the tenacity of those early pioneers, they didn’t have a massive budget and the odds were often stacked against them, the fact those spindly viaducts are standing today carrying heavier trains than they could ever have imagined, is a testament to their skills and ingenuity. Thoroughly enjoying your video as with all your videos. I enjoy them while I am riding my exercycle! I live in New Zealand and just one minor point: early in the journey a main road is captioned as State Highway 7; it is in fact State Highway 73. State Highway 7 runs further north across the Lewis Pass. We've travelled on the train twice, once in winter and once in summer. The winter journey gets up to the snow.

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoy the videos, I'm going to miss visiting New Zealand this year, it's such a beautiful place. I use Google Earth/Maps for a lot of my information, most of the time the information is correct. I was aware the road was Highway 73 at Arthur's Pass, curiosity led me to take a second look, I think this map helps - www.backpack-newzealand.com/images/south-island-map.gif The train follows Highway 7 out of Greymouth to Stillwater, after which it heads towards Lake Brunner and on to Inchbonnie, close to the point where it begins to follow Highway 73 all the way to the outskirts of Christchurch. Over the next few months I'll be covering my 2019 tour of New Zealand including most of New Zealand's tourist routes, along with a few lesser know roads, it would be nice to have your virtual company, keep up the exercise, hopefully it won't be too long before we can all enjoy the big outdoors once again. Take care. Tim.

Great video. I assume the angled-top pickets along the bridge at 45:50 are to discourage base or bungee jumpers. I'd like to use a screen capture of that feature to share with my students, when we cover the ways railways try to prevent people from doing stupid things across, onto, and from their tracks.

Because the mountains on New Zealand's South Island are rightly called the Southern Alps, there is a copy of the most famous mountain in the Alps, the Matterhorn, too. It can be found on another video by Tim where he is exploring the west coast. - Heinz

Hello Heinz, the video I am working on this week shows some of New Zealand's highest mountains, including Mount Cook, although I'm not aware of a New Zealand peak actually called the Matterhorn, there is a peak near Wanaka often referred to as the "Matterhorn of the South" because of its shape - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Aspiring_/_Tititea I am doing a series of videos covering my 2019 tour of the "Land of the Long White Cloud" the first video will be available this weekend. - Tim.

@@pega17pl Hi, I haven't removed any videos, but I think you might be thinking of Mitre Peak, seen in this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLFndtCUurDGpoU.html or maybe Doubtful Sound. New Zealand names can be confusing, many places have two names such as Mount Taranaki also known as Mount Egmont. There is a mountain in Canada, know as the Matterhorn of the Rockies. I guess all these very pointed peaks were created in a similar way, they were once surrounded by glaciers.

Timsvideochannel1 I am used to American and Australian trains which look a bit wider, although, even in Australia, there is narrow gauge rail in Queensland, and some of the rains look a bit narrower. It is in the thumbnail and at the beginning of the journey that this train looks quite narrow. Maybe it is just the style of the front end. BTW, i expected more snow. Was this shot in summer? Is there more snow in winter, and does snow ever affect scheduled services?

Timsvideochannel1 Excellent footage. Now that is the snow I was looking for :) Interesting about train sizes. I know that the penny pinching decision in the 19th century to go narrow gauge has caused a lot of headaches for Queensland because of problems with integrating with the rest of the country, and causing problems with implementing higher speed trains. They are proud of their tilt train, but there was a lot of expense due to get to modern rail speeds due to narrow gauge. Does New Zealand have difficulties too due to that narrow gauge?

william te whata You sir, are an overly sensitive oaf. I am not American. Nor did I say anything about things having to look American. I am having an interesting discussion about the nature of trains in different parts of the world. In this case I was appreciating a fabulous train journey across the South Island, and wanted to know more about the train and the journey. You, however, seem to have one giant chip on your shoulder. I suggest that rather than be located on your shoulder, it is better suited to a place where the sun doesn’t shine.
