Driver's Eye View - Rügen narrow-gauge railway (German: Rügensche Bäderbahn) or "Rasender Roland"

The delightful Rügen narrow-gauge railway (German: Rügensche Bäderbahn), also known by its nicknamed “Rasender Roland or Raging Roland") is a 24 km long 750 mm gauge steam operated railway connecting Putbus to Göhren via Binz, Sellin and Baabe on the Baltic Coast island of Rügen in German's "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" state. Since 2008, it has been run by the Pressnitztalbahn GmbH. At Putbus the railway connects with the Deutsche Bahn standard gauge network. The Rasender Roland is used by locals and tourists alike to reach popular holiday destinations in Southeast Rügen.
The first section of the line opened on the 22nd July 1895 and ran between Putbus and Binz and is still in service today. By 1896 the Rügensche Kleinbahn-Aktiengesellschaft (RüKB) had extended its network to cover almost 105 km with lines to Altefähr, Bergen auf Rügen, Lauterbach Mole and Göhren. Sadly the bulk of the network closed between 1967 and 1970.

This area was new to me and I'd love to return in summer. I used Google Earth to follow the route and was surprised to see so many traditional seaside towns complete with ornate piers reminding me of the days when my home town still had a pier until most of it was washed away in a storm.

Than you Tim for another wonderful video! You say that the line is used 'by local and tourists alike'. This line is not a 'heritage line' run by enthusiasts. Rather it forms part of the regular all-the-year round public transport system.

Ffestiniog Railway has been running since 1832 without that being a problem! It's the oldest railway company in the world still operating under its original company with the worlds oldest railway workshop in operation. Well worth a visit if you ever get to Wales!

Narrow gauge railways defy logic, yet they are perfectly safe, even if everyone moves to one side.

The rail width is 75 cm, which is about 2.5 inches less than 3 feet. A standard guage railway is 143.5 cm ( 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) so not really much difference.

It seems to me from your various videos about Narrow Guage Railways on the Continent, particularly Germant, that there are many more of them than in the UK and that they are used predominantly as a service for the regular railway user in country districts, rather than just as a facility for tourists and holiday makers as in the UK. As a. Non-railway buff, does anybody know why they are so extensive in Germany . .are they mainly located in what used to be East Germany ?

Hello Nicholas, I'm off to Wales next week to visit narrow gauge railways and your observations match my own, non of the Welsh railways run a year round service. The German railways I have featured lately are located in Saxony, East Germany and they own their continued existence to the days when East Germany was part of the Soviet Block. During the comunist era these railways were an integral part of the public transport network, private cars were rare and often public transport was the only way ordinary folk could travel. When the Berlin Wall came down these railways were run by the state and expected to fail when faced with Western style road competition, as it turned out, far sighted local authorities took these lines over from the state operator, retaining them as part of the local transport infrastructure. Today they serve a twin roll as both a valuable transport mode and a tourist attraction.

My favourite view of all, just one little thing not quite right. The Driver didn't keep up a sharp bark, which he needs to do to make the engine heard as she approaches each and every crossing. A loud sharp bark and a loud short toot of the whistle is enough to warn people and road vehicles to keep well clear, so no-one gets killed.

It's always good to hear the steam engine approaching, although in some cases the driver was slowing for stations, many of which were near to level crossings, leaving him with just the whistle to warn of his approach.

At 24 km or what is remaining of the longer route, it is thus longer than the L & B here and serves maybe as an object lesson as to why one line got shut down in the 1930s with undue haste I must add whereas the North German counterpart has survived at least in part. It’s a curious world we live in.

I hope I get to see the L & B re-opened in my lifetime, after all miracles do happen, just look at the Welsh Highland Railway today. Many of the East German narrow gauge railways own there survival to the communist era where public transport was often the only means of transport. The railways were all run by the state and after the fall of the Berlin wall they were expected to close. Fortunately, many including the Harz Mountain Railways along the railways around Dresden and this railway were saved by far sighted local authorities to continue operating as an integral part of the public transport network. These days a considerable number of tourists visit Saxony just to see and ride on these wonderful railways.

Tim, thanks for making my day with this video. Although I’m from an entirely different world - one of broadguage rail lines, overcrowded trains and stations, mindless and purposeless hurry, big egos and rapacious greed for money etc. yet, I would like to see these quiet railways where ambitions are small and contentment high.

They' ve certainly got some stations that "God forgot", but even they are 10 times more interesting, cheerful and characterful than the "Prison Bus" halts that are in vogue with Rail Track (Or whatever they are called these five minutes) as new stations.

Hello Robert, sorry I'm a bit late replying, I've been filming railways in and around Wales and our accommodation didn't have internet. It's a pity part of the Rügen narrow-gauge railway network has been closed, but on the plus side some of it has survived for future generations to enjoy. I think the "FORBES GAUGE" is an infinity variable gauge 😊.
