I'm not sure if this is the scope of the question or not but I wanted to take a crack at it. In the processor the CPU has a digital clock everything in the PLC is timed on this clock. One good thing to look at to get an understanding of how this works is to look up timing diagrams and digital logic. I'm not sure if this is what you meant here or not, but just thought I would take a try. By the way great video, as always. I find myself watching your videos more often than not on my way to work, because you have a way of explaining things to where I always gain some sort of insight even from the basics. Are there something I haven't thought about or something that I can't gain from the textbook. I hope people see the value that you are really adding to their life with the content that you create, it really will change someone's life. Thanks as always Tim

Check out this video on how the timer works under the hood. The main take away was that the timer instructions do not hold any values. They simply can read and write to the data tables.

Great video, I didn't know about timer TT bit. You didn't explicitly mention how to handle an input that only goes true once (a momentary push button), to start the timer, and doesn't stay on. It wasn't immediately obvious to me that I had to add a branch below the momentary input to XIC the timer TT, which will only stop the timer when it's done counting.

In the event of a black out or brown out condition will this program force an operator to press a reset button to continue, thus providing low voltage protection?
@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne Жыл бұрын
Not unless you program it to and if you're looking for a true protection then you're starting to talk about safety integrity levels.

Hi tim greetings Can timers count floating numbers? I mean, in the Preset of the timer, for example, place a value of 2.4s. it's possible??.
@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne 4 жыл бұрын
Great question Stanley. The answer is both yes and no. Timers can only time whole numbers but you can change your time base to account for decimals. Time bases that are available are whole seconds, tenths of a second (0.1), and thousands of a second(0.001). So if you set your time base to 0.1 and put your preset at 24 then you will have a 2.4 second timer.

Dear Sir, thank you for your great videos. In this lesson you say that we can use timers to count for example how many times the Motor runs ON , but as you know we can only count as Max. for 9 hours, so how can we count the Motor run time if this Motor runs for Weeks or Months or longer than that ?
@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne 4 жыл бұрын
I have it on the list to make a video about this. Basically I would use a timer with a preset of 3600 and a timebase of 1 second which would equal an hour. Then each time the timer is done, I would add one to a number and reset the timer. Then the number is the hours and the timer ACC dived by 3600 is the fraction of an hour completed. Hope that helps and next time I'm making RsLogix 500 videos I'll cover this.

Hi Tim I work as an electrician at a slab factory in Scotland and I am trying to add an external timer for our hydraulic press so the operator can adjust the press time without me having to go in through the plc. Do you have a video that would help with this? Or could you point me in the right direction? Many thanks

Great videos Tim and Amber! I am having some trouble. I'm trying to get back into programming after about 25 years of not doing it and your videos have been very helpful. I'm able to communicate with the MicroLogix 1200, but when I try to download a different program to the PLC it gives me fault ( no response from processor at selected path/ node! Diagnostic Status failed: 0x4 ). Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?
