And one of the biggest reasons I don't own a Schuyler or more than one Cambridge (I own a Cambridge cameo but no others) is because there are none with thumb indexing. When a new Bible comes out, the first thing I do is see if there is an edition with indexes. It makes navigating the Bible just so much quicker.

@@gloriaanngomez3238 To be fair, I said "borderline," and I suppose if it's very clear that it's in a separate "non-inspired" part at the end, kind of like the Apocrypha in some Bibles, it would alleviate most of my concerns. But although I'm not a liberal, we as conservatives have to reckon with the fact that many of the founding fathers (but not all and maybe not even the majority to be fair, but many nonetheless) didn't even believe in Jesus as the Christ (Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin come to mind, both admired Jesus, but they did not believe he was divine). I've actually read Ben Franklin's autobiography and yup, any fair reading indicates that at least at the time it was written, Ben Franklin was not a Christian, at least not in any traditional sense of the definition. The U.S. Constitution was an amazing achievement, but the Bible's light will burn brighter and inspire more people far longer than the Constitution will ever be remembered, and it does seem not right to me to put it together with the Bible, but that's just my opinion.

Great video, I personally love the Thompson Chain. yes, the older ones were very "busy" but the new ones are much improved. I think what I like about the Thompson the most is that if you want to just read the Bible, it is there with no intrusions from super-scrips, sub-scripts, letters, numbers, or symbols, and no fear of the text falling into the gutter. if you find a passage interesting, you can look to the margin and and get references or parallel passages, or even follow the whole chain. the strength of the Thompson is that instead of an authors commentary (which may or may not align with your views), it really only uses scripture as commentary on scripture. Some of this may be nostalgia from when I was young and saw the maps in the back that showed the travels of different people laid out in an easy to understand form.

I just found your channel (from the God Bless the USA Bible review)... To me, the importance of a video like this is that it gives people "permission" to think about what they DO and DO NOT like about whatever Bible they have been exposed to... As a teen, I found it very hard to try to read through the Bible - something my teachers and elders told me that I REALLY needed to do. I had an somewhat old KJV to read from and deciphering the language kept derailing me. I always thought that something was wrong with ME... I grew up during a time that younger followers didn't question what they were taught or told by teachers... An honest message like this with no JUDGEMENT, only opinions, would have saved me a lot of anguish and might have helped me find what I needed to grow. The message that it is OKAY to know what presentation works and doesn't work for me.

I agree with you on everything except the brightly colored Bibles. As an artist and musician I like the idea of rebinding or buying a new Bible that is in your favorite color. I guess it's an Identity thing you know it's your Bible in a pile of other's belongings at the end of church or church event when you bring your Bible with. Like a perse it can be a self expression. I feel like Bibles are personal when you own one you often put your name in the front maybe buy some personalized bookmarks for it why not have one in a color that pleases your eye. Yeah some are gaude looking but eh I'm not against a colored Bible. Humans come in different colors.

It was great, but I now have trouble seeing it. It’s too busy and I need larger prints. I absolutely love my Treveris KJV. It’s my first premium Bible and I was looking for a readers KJV. And I like the drop caps because it reminds me of old manuscripts (I have a degree in NT textual criticism). So for me this is perfect. But I realize it’s not for everyone. I have the newly released Humble Lamb NASB HIStory edition in bright yellow. For the most part, I don’t take it to church and I’ve definitely never preached from it in our adult settings. However, I did have it with me while teaching a youth class once and it came in clutch as an illustration. Also, I’ve found that it is a FANTASTIC conversation starter. Anything I carry a bible that sparks conversation (something that can’t really be said about other bibles I have,) it is always note worthy to me and I remember to try and carry it frequently. So I agree with your assessment of bright color bibles from a more personal stance, but I also see some place for them that could ultimately be valuable. Great video! I have gained so much from the Chain-Reference Bible. The objection to it that it feels like too much to learn about on each page, I really do not understand that at all.

Of those you listed, the patriotic Bibles turn me off the most. A lot of our patriotism treads too close to idolatry for my tastes, and patriotic Bibles always send me running. However, I like the look of the Treveris for the very reasons you don't. I hope one day they put up a KJV with Apocrypha (tall order, I know).

I really loved this video! You did a great job articulating features that you've found that make Bibles "that aren't right for you" -- often figuring out what we don't like about certain Bibles helps us narrow down and focus on the versions best for us. I'm unsurprised you're not a fan of brightly colored Bibles as I recall you mentioning that bright color not being one you'd personally want to bring to church. I love the look of brightly colored Bibles, but understand why many think they're garish or not somber enough for a daily Bible. Totally agree with you about the Thompson Chain-Reference Bibles! I've tried to use one before and found myself consistently overwhelmed or distracted. Glad they're around and so popular as many people seem to benefit greatly from them. It was a kindness to point out publicly that not everyone is looking to purchase a 5 Solas rebind and that rebinders are limiting their potential market when they make them without a particular purchaser in mind. You weren't unkind, didn't mention any companies by name in a negative manner, and if I were a small business owner this is feedback I'd be interested in. Love the Treveris! There's definitely been Bibles you've pointed out as some of your absolute favs that I wasn't enthused about -- we're so lucky there's such a wonderful diversity of Bibles to choose from in today's market! I completely agree with you about patriotic Bibles. I'd never been a fan of them as they seemed to be pandering, but you're right: it's really not cool to be mixing our allegiances to God and to our country in a copy of the Scriptures. Sorry, USA, but though I love you, you're coming in second place to God if there's a competition.

Good afternoon. I've watched several of your videos and I found them refreshing. I've been searching for a new Bible and wanted some Pros and Cons from other people. As far as color, I lean towards a Black color. Yeah, I'm Old School. My first Bible was given to me by my parents. It had a Blue Binding. In 1970, I bought a Black Zondervon Bible. In about 1980 I bought a Brown Thompson Chain Bible. I recently bought a Black Thompson Chain Bible but, I've been looking at the R.L. Allan and the Schuyler Bibles as well. The Allan and Schuyler Bibles are very nice and, the price of them reflects how nice they are. I really appreciate your honesty on your appraisals of the different Bibles Pros and Cons. Aside from my preference for the color Black, I also lean towards the KJV. Thanks for sharing your input and honest thoughts on selecting a Bible for your daily Bible reading. Stan

This was a fun one! I'm still trying to figure out why a man who wears subdued clothing would NOT want a bright bible for a pop of color. haha I'm with you on the Thompson and the treveris. I actually don't like the Schuyler Quintel because the words all blend together in my mind (all the pages look alike too) and it makes it hard to read and remember where something is. My son thinks the same way as I gave him mine. Could be us! It's a gorgeous bible though.

I totally agree with you on every point, except the brightly coloured Bibles! I'm a sucker for them! Oh...and I can't personally speak for the Schuyler Treveris as I've never seen that one. I did buy a Thompson Chain-Reference Bible not long ago and haven't used it since. I had the same reaction as you, it's too 'busy' and overwhelming. I thought it would be a great main Bible to have because it would allow Scripture to interpret Scripture, rather than getting someone's personal interpretation, but I just couldn't handle it, so it just sits on my shelf gathering dust...I will probably give it away or donate it to an op shop eventually.

Oh Tim you broke me! I just ordered the Schuyler Treveris ESV in imperial blue. But that's okay and I love your videos. I took it to heart when you said you should get a bible that speaks to you. When I saw the Treveris, it has all the features I was looking for in a bible. The bible I ordered will be a daily reader and I like the uncluttered look of the single column. I also love the look of the drop caps and the verse numbers in the gutter. This bible spoke to me and I'm sure it will be wonderful! You do an awesome job in your reviews and I’m so glad I found your channel. My next bible will be a Schuyler NIV PSQ hopefully in matching imperial blue. Take care and God Bless!

I agree with most everything you said. The Trevaris is what threw me off a bit. I had collected quite a few nice bibles from Allan in the past. ESV, NIV and KJV. I then purchased a full sized Canterbury KJV and was blown away at how nice it was. To be honest, my Allan bibles fell a bit short of it. I then bought a personal size Canterbury and it was every bit as nice as the full size. Well, I have been wanting to size up a little bit from my EDC Allan ESV (my eyes are getting old) and was leaning toward the Trevaris. I do like the drop caps in the Canterbury and really enjoy the single column for reading. Should I be looking to something else?

It's funny: my family has always used Thompson Chain Reference Bibles, so for me the layout doesn't bother me. It's what I'm expecting. Neat to hear that someone else has a different opinion. I probably feel similarly to interlinear or parallel Bibles - multiple columns do make the text harder to follow. The Thompson Reference "wings" just seem so natural to me that I don't notice them 😂

Thanks for sharing this, Tim. I agreed with everything you said. I have a Kjv Treveris, and I so wanted to love it but like you, struggle with the drop caps, and I also dislike the opaqueness of the paper, I so wish it could have been a higher gsm as I do see the show through which I find off putting, and also, I'm not a fan of red letter either. I know there are those who really love it, and I really wanted that bible for me to be "the one", but sadly it was not to be. Also, I hear where you are coming from regarding people leaving nasty comments. I rarely now comment on anything as in the past left an opinion and have had some very mean-spirited people respond.

The Thompson chain reference Bible, for me, is a reference tool. so not even in the category of an everyday Bible. My decision about the colorful Bible is still forming - I bought some Humble Lamb Bibles and one is colorful. It's an NASB HIStory version orenge and black. I like it because it's my high school's colors, but that's the only reason I got that color combination. But it's growing on me even while I think I'll get a more muted copy when they do their second run. I really like that version. Maybe they'll do an LSB. Great video, thanks.

I totally agree with you about the Bible you mentioned with reference to the US. If I want to read and know more about the Constitution I will get a copy to read. For me the Bible is GOD'S Word and is not a book about the US. I appreciate Bible reviews as I have bought many different translations over the years. Currently the Bible version I am using for my everyday devotions and reading is "The Living Bible". I find I am understanding this translation better. I feel a bible is a personal matter and choice. GOD just wants us to read the Bible to draw closer to Him and get to know Him.
