The Mark Twain Prize recognizes people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist and creator of memorable characters, Samuel Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled and outraged many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective of social injustice and personal folly. He revealed the great truth of humor when he said "against the assault of laughter nothing can stand."
For more information on the Mark Twain Prize, please visit: www.kennedy-center.org/pages/...
The inaugural Mark Twain Prize was presented to Richard Pryor during the first annual Kennedy Center Celebration of American Humor, October 20, 1998. The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber and is televised annually. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception. Previous recipients of the Mark Twain include Richard Pryor (1998), Jonathan Winters (1999), Carl Reiner (2000), Whoopi Goldberg (2001), Bob Newhart (2002), Lily Tomlin (2003), Lorne Michaels (2004), Steve Martin (2005), Neil Simon (2006), Billy Crystal (2007), George Carlin (2008), Bill Cosby (2009, rescinded in 2018) Tina Fey (2010), Will Ferrell (2011), Ellen DeGeneres (2012), Carol Burnett (2013) Jay Leno (2014), Eddie Murphy (2015), Bill Murray (2016), David Letterman (2017), and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (2018).

She acknowledges on Letterman’s Netflix show that she felt undeserving at the time and she felt it was basically a political reward, but Lorne told her to take it while her parents were alive. It would make more sense if she got it now after finishing up 30 Rock and creating a dozen other shows and movies, along with her monster hit book and musical.

I'm one of the biggest Chappelle fans on the planet and don't think this is that unusual. Fey was prominent before Chappelle on SNL and 30 Rock (which she created and starred in) was a powerhouse in terms of critical acclaim winning 3 straight Emmy's for best show. Chappelle at this point only had 3-4 years at the top and had disappeared. So I can understand her getting one before him. What I CAN'T understand is her and Will Ferrell getting one before EDDIE fucking MURPHY! That makes absolutely no sense. Eddie was literally the biggest comedian in US history in his prime (in terms of dominating standup, TV and the box office).

I just don't know if she deserves it. She has a somewhat extensive body of work, but let's be honest most of it isn't very good. SNL has become garbage since she's taken over, film wise I don't even think anyone says her name at all, and 30 Rock was well recieved, but in all honesty it's not very well written and relies very heavily on celebrity worship. All in all Tiney Fey is adequate but a Mark Twain Prize winner? I don't see it.

Naw man... she was the #1 star and writer on SNL during her run and created/starred in 30 Rock, which has mopped up a ton of awards. Slappypap? No revenge from me my friend. Trump is doing all American a good service so there has been no revenge enacted. Palin was drug through the mud by the media and Tina Fey became "relevant" to the media elite because they believed Tina destroyed her. Sadly, for them, Palin led a republican take over of the House and Senate. She encouraged Trump to run and endorsed him early. America is doing quite well right now. Your welcome very much.
