Tina Turner, original name Anna Mae Bullock, (born November 26, 1939, Brownsville, Tennessee, U.S.-died May 24, 2023, Küsnacht, Switzerland), American-born singer who found success in the rhythm-and-blues, soul, and rock genres in a career that spanned five decades.
Turner was born into a sharecropping family in rural Tennessee. She began singing as a teenager and, after moving to St. Louis, Missouri, immersed herself in the local rhythm-and-blues scene. She met Ike Turner at a performance by his band, the Kings of Rhythm, in 1956, and soon became part of the act. She began performing as Tina Turner, and her electric stage presence quickly made her the centrepiece of the show. The ensemble, which toured as the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, was renowned for its live performances but struggled to find recording success. That changed in 1960, when “A Fool in Love” hit the pop charts, and a string of hit singles followed. Ike and Tina were married in 1962, although the date is subject to some speculation (during the couple’s divorce proceedings in 1977, Ike claimed that the two were never legally married). The Phil Spector-produced album River Deep-Mountain High (1966) was a hit in Europe, and its title track is arguably the high point of Spector’s “wall of sound” production style, but it sold poorly in the United States. Ike and Tina’s final hits as a couple were the cover version of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Proud Mary” (1971) and “Nutbush City Limits” (1973). Tina divorced Ike in 1978, alleging years of physical abuse and infidelity.
After a series of guest appearances on the albums of other artists, she released her debut solo album, Private Dancer, in 1984. It was a triumph, both critically and commercially, selling more than 20 million copies worldwide and winning three Grammy Awards, including record of the year and best female vocal performance for “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” The single became Turner’s signature song. She followed her musical success with a role in the film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). Later albums included Break Every Rule (1986), Foreign Affair (1989), and Wildest Dreams (1996). Her greatest-hits compilation All the Best was released in 2004. Turner continued touring into the 21st century and also appeared on other artists’ albums, notably Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters (2007), a Grammy-winning tribute to Joni Mitchell.
After residing in Switzerland for a number of years, Turner became a Swiss citizen in 2013 and shortly thereafter submitted the paperwork to relinquish her U.S. citizenship. She wrote the autobiographies I, Tina (1986; written with Kurt Loder and adapted in 1993 as the film What’s Love Got to Do with It) and My Love Story (2018) as well as the self-help book Happiness Becomes You: A Guide to Changing Your Life for Good (2020; written with Taro Gold and Regula Curti). Ike and Tina were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. In addition to receiving a Kennedy Center Honor (2005), Tina Turner was given a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement in 2018. That year Tina, a jukebox musical based on her life and directed by Phyllida Lloyd, opened in London’s West End. The musical debuted on Broadway in 2019. Two years later Turner was later the focus of the documentary Tina. In 2021 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo performer.
On May 24, 2023, Turner died at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, at the age of 83 from natural causes after years of illnesses. Turner's body was cremated after a private funeral.

@zahn1976 and @stacykeller3812 My condolences to you both for your losses 🙏🙏 Tina Turner was a voice that echoed in my home cause my mom really identified with her, just like many others. Like Ms.Turner, my mom too endured abuse & struggle but Tina's music and life story inspired my mom to fight and survive and she did. I lost my mom in 2019 to diabetes at 53yo when I was 29. God bless all of our mom's for never giving up and RIP Tina Turner 💙 Thank you Scott for this and for your efforts.✌

I have always loved Tina Turner. I remember watching in awe as she and her dancers shimmied to the beat of Ike's music. She had so much energy. I didn't realize what her personal life was like until I sadly saw the movie. Then she came back in the 80's and proved what a strong woman she was. RIP Tina. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. You are sadly missed.💔

I have to agree with you Jan, she certainly was energetic! She owned the stage with her moves and energy. In the mid to late 80's she gave an on camera interview and in it she explained why she was like that on stage. She stated that initially it was part of the act that Ike wanted her and the other girls to do. Then it became more like a revenge on Ike. Because, the shorter her dresses were and the more sensual her dancing was, that it infuriated Ike. And he couldn't do anything about it while they were performing on stage. Although later he would yell and hit her, however she said that she started to give it back to him as well. I felt so bad for her. She said time and time again that she wrote I, Tina, the inspiration for the movie What's Love Got to Do with It so she could get it all out there and not have to talk about it again. However after the book and movie, that's what every interviewer wanted to talk about. I am so happy that she found peace and happiness in her life. But even in finding that, she had tragedies, like having to bury 2 of her children. May she rest in heavenly peace...

What an inspiration Tina Turner is! Her strength, inner & outer beauty, bravery, and determination are unrivaled. Her honesty about her own experiences with domestic violence spoke to so many women, myself included. While it’s sad that she is gone, her legacy while always live on. Very touching that you were able to not only find someone taking care of her memorial, but also share with you additional information about her recording studio. Scott, you are the living embodiment of the saying wherever you are is where you exactly need to be! Take care.

@@LPS-ww4wl I didn't mean public as everyone is invited. I meant to say no fair celebration of life was given to her to celebrate her career just like they did with other artist who were as big as Tina. BET added Patti Labelle and she didn't even know the lyrics. I just feel like she deserved a big celebration of life memorial and if they decided to cremate her afterwards, so be it

@Scott: Thank you so much for this video. Tina Turner was a true icon with a powerhouse voice, dance moves that never stopped, and those million dollar legs! The memorial is beautiful, and I hope she knows how much her fans in the United States loved her and will miss her. We will always have her music to listen to though. I’m pretty sure that the home she lived in with Ike must have seemed like a prison at times. He was, in my opinion, a horrible human being who controlled every aspect of Tina’s life. He was brutally abusive towards her, and I’m certainly glad she finally found the courage to literally run away from him. There’s never an excuse for domestic violence. It’s interesting to me that the studio was called The Bullock Studio as that was Tina’s last name before it was changed. I’m very glad that she was able to find true love with her husband, Erwin Bach, and she loved her life in Switzerland so very much! I actually read that as the end of her life approached she began to sort through her famous shoe collection, and began to send her close friends from the music industry each a pair of those high heels that she used to dance in. Her friends were thrilled to receive such a personal token and memory from her. I hope that she will rest in peace, and maybe meet up with some of the special people who made her realize that she never really needed Ike, and that it was she who was truly the talented one. People like David Bowie. Maybe she’s singing and dancing up there right now! Imagine the collaborations that might occur.

it's really odd there were no public memorial ( just a photo ore video tape ) and no grave, she was such a public, famous and beloved person and we just don't know we're she went.....

Tina Turner was such an amazing woman. Tina's vocals added, inspirations, spiritualism, depth and soul to her music. Tina was incredible and kind, always down to earth. Love you and miss you, Tina the star and homely girl Anna Mae.

Im glad she found a love that treated her like the Queen she was for the last 30 years of her life. I read it was basically love at first sight that night they met.

I live pretty close to Nutbush, Tennessee...Her home town. If you ever get to West Tennessee you need to go there. There us a blue museum near there with an area dedicated to Tina Turner.
