Tom saved my life. I used to leave the radio on while I slept, one night while I was fast asleep his song "On The Nickel" awakened me to a house that was burning the smoke would have killed me or the flames would've. His music always moved me and I was in a very dark time of my life my wife had left me and I missed my kids so very much. God bless him he's the real deal a true individual. I don't know where all that music comes from but it's got to be a special place. He sings for those who lost their way and whose lives are full of pain, he gets me deep down.

I picked up Tom Waits in my cab in Phila in 1976. He introduces himself and I mentioned that I had never heard of him. e told me that a lot of people didn't. We stopped at Days Deli on Spruce Street and asked me if i wanted anything. I said no and he bought a sandwich and took it with him to a friends house in Bala Cywyd. Later that year In June I was in London and noticed a sign on the Paladium Theater staying that Tom Waits was performing there the next week. Then I knew who he was! A great Guy! I never forgot it.

Although I don't doubt that Mr. Waits meant it when he said it on that bizarre talk show parody in the 70's, that quote had been around since well before he said it. He's the kind of guy that says something brilliant almost everyone he opens his mouth; sometimes he thought of it, sometimes he heard it somewhere before and recognized it's brilliance, so he repeated it and made it better...but unfortunately this one didn't start with him.

@@KM-zw9qb it is a persona but he doesn't step outside himself critically to get there. If you're healthy enough and developed enough you don't need to. If not the temptation is stronger by degrees. Some people have little option minute minute to minute, and they are constantly in a crisis situation. Many don't know it normalize it among similar people etc. But the way back is hard, long, and frequently humiliating when possible if a good true answer is what you're looking for. Murderers are just being themselves too, you know? You have to look at what you got to work with vs need to do day to day and plan your (re) integration very carefully. You only have one self. It's thankless until it proceeds far enough, and temptation to act how you want to be instead of 'being ' is strong until being contains 'enough' to carry sufficient weight. It won't ever become 'being' unless you always hold both at the same time. Until then the rewards are very slim. Afterward, still slim until it takes a pleasing form. After that though, the world is yours. Lucky are those able to know early and not have it taken from them. Maybe next luckiest are those never to really to know but who move easily among a large demographic of similar people, and in a required functional way never need to. Anyway, Tom is both fortunate and also has earned it by ongoingly making the very best of it.

It's very straightforward and more of a humorous observation/story than an actual set-up/punchline joke. It's commentary first on how New York has changed a bit from the graffiti covered, crime-ridden cesspool of yesteryear and into the hipster dominated, frozen yogurt and yoga-practicing capital of the world. But the additional layer, the meat of the humor, and the reason Tom Waits felt "embarrassed" for them, is that people stand in line for things that are either a necessity (think the DMV) or highly sought after/desired (iphones, concerts, meeting the pope). To stand in line for something as plain, easily accessible, and arbitrary as salad is just plain stupid. People standing in line for salad IS the joke.
