In our video we ask 'Is it worth visiting Tintagel Castle?'.
We also give a local's tip to save money on your ticket price.
Tintagel is a small town on the rugged north coast of Cornwall UK and has long been associated with King Arthur, although no actual evidence proves he either existed or lived here.
Today the Tintagel Castle is a ruin and managed by English Heritage as a visitor attraction. It is situated on an island with stunning views up and down the coast. Highlights include the modern bridge access, the interpretation of the ruins and the Gallos statue, commonly called the 'Arthur statue'. Watch to see if it is worth it?

We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on KZfaq, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.
If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!

Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?

No matter what anyone says about Tintagel, I will always love it. It just has a special place in my heart from when I was very young. The myth, the legend, the mystery, the atmosphere. I'm a little biased as I have been there on windswept dark rainy evenings & climbed those steps, with not a soul in the world around. It's a whole different world then. You can't put a price on a place that makes you feel that way. No statues, no gimmicks, no bridge in those days & no admission prices!! Would I pay that now?? Yep, probably, just to capture the moment again...but due to mobility issues now, sadly that won't happen. Memories are everything! x J x

In this internet era, I'm shocked that people haven't done any research before visiting places. All it takes is a few clicks or swipes to discover A) what is there? and B) how much it costs and can I get it cheaper ? As you have shown many times in the past being a member of an organisation eg NT,CHT,or English heritage will pay for itself in the long run. If you are fans of Arthurian legend then this, and Glastonbury (Avalon) are musts, just do some research first . Great video all the same.

We visited Tintagel last summer, we however didn't get fleeced but used the many paths to take great pictures of the coastline and Tintagel its self. If the cost were half we have done done but for a few stones no. Great video.

How on earth do they arrive at those ridiculous charges? I'm surprised people are prepared to pay that. It must be years since I went to Tintagel. The bridge wasn't there. In fact, there was nobody there and the enormous, intimidating hotel was very rundown. There is nothing there and I fear it will turn into another Lands End with a licence to print money opportunity for some. The only affiliation I have of Tintagel is Rick Wakeman's 1975 album 'The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and The Knights of The Round Table'.

I know someone who used to work at the Camelot Castle Hotel and quite a few people, and not just foreigners, thought that the hotel was King Arthur's castle!

Another nice video guys, and like your balanced views. Though we've been to Tintagel a few times, it must be over 10 years since we last went over to the island itself. A one off visit does look pricey, but after watching your video we've explored online, the many different English Heritage sites, and may consider a years membership and visit as many other sites in that year as we can.

Another well informed video - interesting and balanced. I agree with you the Cornish Heritage card seems like a good purchase and I always think of my grandson when I see the statue - he did love Star Wars and ‘Arthur’ does look like Darth Vader ha ha!!. I think the the admission costs are quite a lot for a scenic walk across a bridge & for the little that seems to be there. I guess the toilet issue is another consideration the young and the elderly must fine this difficult & I put myself in the ‘elderly’ category. However, it is probably a once in a lifetime experience & probably one you will always remember. Well done Sarah and Andrew for another super video.

tintagel holds beautiful memories for me when i visited a sunny febuary 20 yers ago, the ruins give a sense of its history and is probably built on a much earlier settlement. there was a thick fog the evening we went and had to stay at a guest house there,as driving was very unsafe,. near tintagel are beautiful rocky wooded glens, 'rocky Valley', with running streams and waterfalls, like a fairy glen, covered in moss and spiral mazes cut into the rock by a ruined watermill made of stone. i love it there. the real magic is in the landscape.

I went to Tintagel as a teenager and tell in love with the area, always felt a special bond with the place. But having a sizeable daughter now and my own mobility issues I can't visit anymore which breaks my heart. But at least I get to see the places I love through your video's.

I've been there as a child, (that was about 70 years ago) and a few times since with our children. But, I agree with your comments of cost and facilities. Its not one for older people or anyone with issues etc. Great video and a lovely review. All the best Bob

Thank you for a fair and balanced video. It's years since I've been to Tintagel, before the bridge was built. I think it is a great place, but definitely too expensive. King Arthur, if he existed, was a Celtic ruler defending against the Saxons. Strangely he is portrayed as living in a much later period and as an English ruler. Beautiful scenery, thank you once again.

We visited recently for the first time. I agree more info is needed on the walk around. The bridge was surprisingly wide! The sunny non-windy weather is a must. Watching a kestrel hunting right in front of our eyes was a highlight and quite mystical. Thanks for sharing your thoughts x

we went in many years ago, around 20 years, when our boys were little. The last time we visited on our own was 2016 so the new bridge wasnt there, we did all the free bits as we had the dogs with us like Merlins cave and walked along the coast path either side for the views, its definitely got a lot more expensive for what is actually there... and can I say that Im happy that 'CSI Mevagissy' and Sarahs belly laugh has been reinstated 🙂

Good morning from Canada. My wife and I visited Tintagel in 2016, before the bridge was built, and had a fabulous time exploring. We found climbing up and down the steps (the ones you went down) added to the mystery and mystical aura of the island. It was an experience that we enjoyed thoroughly. From our perspective, the bridge has ruined the adventure of what’s around the next corner as you climb. England, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall are full of “it could have happened here” which is part of the beauty and fun of exploring these places. What we also enjoyed was the age groups of people who climbed the steps from seniors, to children to people with dogs and we all chatted up and down the steps. It was a great experience. The bridge is noce looking and an architectural feat but, it doesn’t belong there.

My partner and I visited Cornwall in March and loved it so much that I found your films and have been working my way through them all, so far I’ve reached 223 puns!😂I’ve not been to Tintagel yet but it looks interesting enough to visit. I do notice that English Heritage have a 20% off promotion at the moment so worth it if you want to visit all the different sites in Cornwall and beyond. I just paid £57.60 for the year which makes a lot more sense. Look forward to seeing your next walk. X

I think you were pretty fair in your assessment of it! I've been, of course, but many years ago. I'd say to anyone visiting Tintagel, rather than go to the castle, walk round the coast to Rocky Valley. You'll see views on the way as good as any from the castle, you'll see one of the most beautiful valleys in Cornwall, you'll even see a ruin! A lovely old mill, with an amazing old maze carved on the rock face inside, and all for free!

Your videos always leave me with a happy smile and memories of a bygone age, it’s Mary many years since visiting ‘TINTAGEL’ I do remember how stunning the light was (an artists dream) don’t remember any visitor attractions, I would never ever go on any bridge that was suspended in mid-air if you paid me a million pounds, after having to be rescued from one because my english pointer refused to move after going several feet across and started shaking so hard it made my teeth rattle, I was more terrified than she was, it took about six strapping young men to retrieve us, never been so embarrassed in all my life …. I’m with Andrew it should be called ‘Scammalot’ but agree with Sarah it has a romantic atmosphere just imagining King Arthur wondering about the castle with Lady Guinevere 💘 I’m wondering if Arthur would be impressed by the remarkable sculpture! I think 3 - 5 is a fair guess! thanks 🙏 both of you for another delightful tour/history lesson, but I’ll be forever wondering if he ever did live or even go there 🤔

As you have mentioned, I think the power of social media does help promote Tintagel as I've seen so many photos of the statue and the doorway leading down to the cliffs on Instagram etc. I've not visied since 1988, but would like to take the family as they have never been. Will investigate the Cornwall Heritage Trust beforehand. Will ensure the kids visit the toilets before we start walking round !.

Having only had three opportunities to visit the UK (sadly never Cornwall), I console myself by collecting secondhand National Trust and English Heritage guidebooks (plus anything else I can get my hands on). After receiving the guidebook for the Tintagel and surrounds, I was far more interested in the old post office run by the National Trust (unfortunately I can't seem to find a book for that site) Though I do love to visit vicariously through your videos. Thanks for the video, love the location. Went there in 2012 with some visitors from France, their kids were a bit upset at not seeing a proper castle after they learnt about King Arthur. Agree with many its a bit of a rip off. Was amazed at the numbers of people visiting the Castle in 2023, I did the Maths at £20 ahead that a nice sum of money but on reflection it’s going into the trust which is a good thing. Think the cost of building the bridge will be covered in no time. Hopefully at £20 ahead the Parking is for Free?? An Audio System sounds like a must since there seems to be a large number of Foreign visitors

There are two organisations in the UK looking after our historical past, one is the National Trust which looks after the old stately Homes arround the UK and English Heritage that preseves the sites of the UK's medieval castles and Ruins, If English Heritge did not look after these historical castle sites they would just disapear like the people that once lived there and the entrance fee covers the cost of maintaining these sites and one way of getting into these English Heritage and National Trust Sites free of charge is to join them as a member, this saves loads of money when on Holiday and these people don't complain about paying extortionate entrance fees to theme parks.

So many people were shocked at the cost of the bridge. We went before the bridge was built and it was a very rainy day. I was quite worried about people slipping & tripping (especially children). So hopefully the bridge has eliminated some of that. My family enjoyed the day, despite the weather.

Some one after my own heart here said the old post office', seeing that old building made my day! I went about 30 odd years ago, it was much cheaper and more affordable. Whenit comes to the Arthurian, I'm a Wilson and Blackett cove...

In 1979 me and some friends went on a camping holiday to Cornwall and came across Tintagel; there were Police and emergency vehicles everywhere. So we decided to stop and explore. The excitement was because an RAF jet had lost control and wedged itself between a B&B and a house. We had missed the crash by about an hour but got some great photos of the aftermath. Very exciting for a bunch of spotty teenagers. Luckily the jet stopped there and didn't career into the High Street, that would have been disastrous. Maybe Merlin intervened ☺️

Talking to my husband - he remembers the crash at Tintagel - it was a Hawker Hunter from RAF Chivenor , Devon. He thinks the pilot ejected. Good comment and great memory.

I think some of them are delusional and expected to see some fairytale castle with jousting going on and shields on walls..... people should go online and research where they are visiting as there is plenty out there on Tintagel....it's a ruin,not the set of some Arthurian film

I visited pre-bridge and didn't go across to the island. I was put off by the dubious shops and strange atmosphere in the village, so we quickly moved on. To be honest, if I wasn't so badly affected by mobility issues and if I was in the area already, I'd go back for the bridge as I think it's stunning. But then I'm an EH member so price is not so much of an issue.

I visited recently and I thought it stated £19 not £21 but it is still far too much. It was a lovely day and there were indeed stunning views, but then again, there were stunning views OF the castle from the coast path for free. I was lucky enough to get in without paying because I am a member of English Heritage which was gifted to me as an Xmas present, although I am struggling to find many more English Heritage attractions within Cornwall to visit.

They seem to vary the price a lot, one day was only £15 online, so very difficult to say exactly how much it costs! I agree though, go to the other headland with a pair of binoculars! Sarah :)

I enjoyed that Guys. Personally, I look upon King Arthur and his merry band as Cornwall's 'Loch Ness Monster. They have made a lot of money out of the fable - not least in 'tat' sold in gift shops. We went there last August, on a fine, warm sunny day. I do believe it is over priced, but since most visitors will go once or twice in a lifetime, its no big deal. I like Andrews comment - similar views for free all along the north coast. I went to see the bridge and the Gallos statue mainly....neither were there 40 years ago!!! Both are impressive, particularly the statue, although (again) I don't accept the Arthur inference. It is very ethereal. I loved the chaps hat blowing off....as if the statue was telling him to 'kneel and take your hat off when addressing me'. You are right, the lack of enough description of what you are actually looking at is frustrating - I thought that too when we were there. There may be a technical reason why they don't use the 'phone like guides' as per Bath....or it maybe that too many idiots will toss them off the cliff when they have finished the tour! It could of course just be that the truth about the castle is actually quite dull if you dispel the Arthur myth.....me being cynical! One thing I am sure of, that walk up the hill back to the village is a killer on a hot day...I thought I was reasonably fit, but wish I had jumped in the Land Rover 😓

You echo my sentiments! I do think though that the bridge and statue are fabulous business decisions, giving people something. There was local objection to the statue being named Arthur on the basis it was ‘Disney’fication. Gallos means power in Cornish and was an acceptable compromise. Sarah :)

Are they charging so much to cover the expenses of the bridge till paid off perhaps I would like to know how much the bridge cost to make,also no offence to baby Arthur as he was found there and innocent in all this as he does not get a penny,so we must respect Arthur’s legend it’s just a shame none annual members got to pay so much😮similar to looking at a low down surviving Roman fort,is there an atmosphere feeling there at all!anyone done video on the magical cave at low tide of course.bridge is paid off a dozen times over maybe funds left over go into other not so profitable sites under their care !

I'm not sure I'd like to visit ~ my expectations may be turned to ruins :) I have vertigo, so would unlkely be able to get across that span brige without crawling on my knees (my mode of movement on the high level walkway at Kew Gardens here in London...it started swaying!). Those views though are incredible!. Cornwall Heritage Trust is a very good deal...I took out membership last year and, as you say Sarah, they do incredible work preserving/protecting Cornish heritage. Great video!

Probably a bit expensive. At least there should have been a loo there for that price 😊 I have never been there but would actually like to visit next time I am in that area. The sculpture is marvellous, and I enjoy walking among old ruins and imagine how it was there when they were in use. I'd also really like to see the giant whose ankles reach 3-4 metres from the ground 😂😂 Thank you for the informative and beautiful video and the great views 🥰

We visited a couple of years ago while on holiday from Scotland, wasn't impressed at all (we bought tickets online), at least Pendennis and St Mawes have "proper" castles you can explore. I suppose the legend keeps it going, same as Loch Ness.

As a National Trust life member, I considered joining English Heritage. It quickly became clear the English Heritage membership or entry fees were not for Mr & Mrs Average . Very occasionally I do feel aggrieved that I cannot enter EH properties especially because they buy properties using public funds.

I visited a few days before you were there. I did think it was a bit expensive considering what is there. I’ve been to better castle ruins in France that were free. It think they’re playing to the Arthur myth. I did enjoy seeing it but it’s something you only need to do once.

Overpriced and factor in parking in the village when you get there . Nice on a warm day great views Pasty shop on entry point excellent. local pubs excellent. Also views of Barracks on eastern side.

The price is a bit steep, but people should consider that the bridge was built at considerable cost to allow all persons access to the castle once only access able for the fittest of people. The ruins have to be maintained against the elements. All this expense has to covered by something and where possible usually by public ticket sales or donations .

Lovely views on a clear day. When I went back in the 70's on a family holiday it was a grey and drizzley day. Disapointing as a child as I was expecting a proper castle. 😂 Its great to buy into the myth.

We feel that it’s about the mythology of the place, and nothing else. Also if you had audio devices (like in Bath) you wouldn’t hear because of the wind. We went there after hours, so we didn’t have to pay. We didn’t get to cross the bridge, but we did get all the feels. )

Didn’t have to pay 50 years ago. Won’t be visiting again. A pile of stones for that price isn’t worth it. Thanks for your video confirming it.

I went last year and was disappointed. I knew it was ruins, but I love history, but still the ticket price was too high. I wasn't expecting so many people and dogs also so disorganised. Even though I had paid in advance I still queued for 45 minutes in the heat to get in. I walked around in a queue with what felt like 30,000 people, no space to get away from anyone. So many people had brought a dog and they where barking like crazy, echoing off the cliffs. I never thought I could feel claustrophobic outside.

We agree with your scores, we were very underwhelmed with the whole thing. Who says Arthur actually existed anyway, let alone whether he was associated with the castle, if that's what it was ?

Yes, it is expensive, especially if you have a family. we visited 3 years ago and as English Heritage members, cost us nothing. i enjoyed the ruins, but that was what we expected. Main problem is that there are no toilets or refreshments up at the castle. it's a long tiring walk down to the cafe. with a very steep walk back up to the village. Didn’t visit Merlins cave. can you only access that when the tide is out?

Love Tintagel. Always stay at Headlands campsite when I visit Cornwall. Never paid to visit the castle and never would. Cornwall has been ruined. Really expensive everywhere. Cheaper to go to Japan than stay in Cornwall now. It's a shame.

Hi both. I've walked past this tourist magnet for years its lovely walking past and your pockets don't get lighter. I have been in the mythical merlins cave that I very much doubt was there when the King Arthur was there 😅 This place is the Lockness monster of Cornwall. No proof but charge you as if there really was history of Arthur. The buildings were probably shepherd huts and small holding for sheep. Wishing well too that lightens your pockets too ❤. Gotta love the balls of them asking for 21 quid and they felt guilty so put a bridge in and added a statue all great but there are other real ruins like the old workings from the real history mines 😅. I'm sure it's lovely and worth it for some in ankle deep ruins not for me. St Agnes walk we do we love it as parking free and mine buildings with chimneys to see and touch. I'm sure I could kayak to the island and climb onto it. It's not a castle....😮😅😮 All the best Kev the brinklow kayaker

I can find nothing on the Cornish Heritage Trust site saying the membership will get you free entry to Tintagel Castle. It is not listed in there 12 sites? Sorry my mistake, I found the statement, when you become a member, you also get free access to all English Heritage sites in Cornwall.

I can reassure you it’s Definitely free entry because we went in on the Cornwall Heritage Membership, didn’t pay a penny! Might be worth pinging Cornwall Heritage trust an email for confirmation if you are worried. Sarah :)

Very easy answer to the title music: Epic Sound bought the copyright and changed its status from ‘free to use’ to paying £9 a month ad infinitum for the privilege. They have forced us to remove it from some of our old videos because we didn’t pay, but have gone quiet for the moment. Unfortunately the channel revenue is not enough to warrant it! So we had to find something else. Tbh, I much preferred the old music! Sarah :)

Я и Англию то полюбила, можно сказать, узнав эту легенду. Легендарному королю бритов присущи такие качества как благородство, порядочность, честность, верность слову, возвышенное отношение к женщине, деликатность и такт. Он собрал вокруг себя достойнейших и храбрейших воинов, держал в Камелоте пышный двор и свято чтил идеалы рыцарской чести. Эти все черты мне думается присущи всем английским мужчинам. Я знаю и понимаю что замок в Тинтагеле, руины которого вы показали был построен примерно в 1233 году Ричардом, графом Корнуолла (представителем нормандской династии Плантагенетов, это значительно позже, чем время, когда жил король Артур. Но, так хочется верить, что всё-таки это то место, где жила мать короля Артура леди Игрэйн, и отсюда Мерлин тайком увез младенца Артура.

Since covid Cornwall as a whole seems to be trying to recover every penny lost through lock down. It seems hell bent on discouraging tourism by hyping up entry fees, parking fees and the cost of commodities. Since leaving Cornwall in 2016 to be nearer grandchildren we have felt compelled to return on holidays because we love the County and the people.this year our camping fees have risen hy 50% and last year saw many free parking after 6pm locations disappear. Now charged on 24 hour basis. Be careful Cornwall, tourism is needed don't kill it off by greed. We lived there for a number of years. Not a second home!!

They don't have enough info about the dark age village. or the broze age village and the big trading port that it was, After all it is why they belive it is the home of Arthur. They could have a model of the 12th centre castal. letting you understand the lay out of it. I also don't understand why the statue of Arthur is facing inward and not outwards ready to defend the realm. But I admit its a big con for the price

I remember visiting when I was a child around 40 years ago. There was nothing wrong with the old wooden bridge and it used to be free! Whilst the ruins are of historical and archeological importance, charging £22 is simply not worth the money. What work is going on? Are English Heritage doing anything? It’s a very old ruins on a very windswept island!
