As a cake decorator by profesion, your beginner tequic was somewhat accurate towards the end. Myself as well as my trainees all had to learn how to base-iced cakes before we could learn how to decorate. And we had to do this every day for 3 weeks to master it. And my first experience was doing this on ice-cream cakes, so I had to be quick and fast so the ice-cream wouldn't melt. I don't recommend this when you are starting out. 😅

As an ex- cake decorator, I love these! It’s a lot easier to smooth a cake when it has some weight to it, adding even pressure to the sides as you spin, so this was an extra challenge. Even after months of training i was still the slowest one… so this ain’t easy 😅
@dominiquehebert4903

When I decorated cakes at a grocery store we had a comb sort of thing for the sides that was the height of the cake which looked really nice and you didn't spend as much time trying to get "flat" looking icing. My favourite "icing" though was the cakes we did in whipped cream, had none of the resistance actual icing does
@recoveringsoul755
@recoveringsoul755 11 ай бұрын
As a home decorator who took classes, we had the turntable that spins around. So you put the cake on that, centered, and spin it around while holding your offset spatula still and you get nice flat smooth sides. And there's all kinds of texture patterns, and if you really want to put in some time, you can make the sides look like a basket weave pattern. They really need little tips, a star tip minimum.

I actually love that the example is a mess. It's supposed to be directed toward kids, but unlike most marketing and packaging for things like it, it looks like it was actually made by a beginner. Most kids aren't professional cake decorators, so I thinj it's great that they're showing kids and beginners what to expect and not giving up their hopes by showing something (like other products do) that not only is too difficult for beginners, it's often full on photoshopped and not even possible in the real world at all. And, if the customer happens to be good at this particular craft, the beginner level examples inspire them to do a good job and it helps them get excited to begin, which they hope will turn into excitement to get more.

Cake decorating tips for those curious: #1. An offset spatula and turntable are your best friends. #2. Mound all the frosting on top of the cake first, then push it out and down to do the sides. It's always easier to scrape away the excess than it is to patch thin spots. #3. Every time your spatula leaves the cake, it's important to scrape the excess frosting off it before smoothing the cake again. Also, it helps to have a glass of warm water on hand to dip your spatula in every now and again, as it gets you a super smooth frosting job. Just dry it off with a paper towel after each dip. #4. Drizzles can be coaxed where you want them with a toothpick or wooden skewer. Put your topping all over the top or pipe it along the top edge (depending how much you want), then gently push it over the lip. Drizzles are best formed when allowed to fall naturally down the side of the cake. #5. 90% of cake decorating is learning how to cover up your mistakes. Did you gouge the side accidentally with your piping tip? Might be a good spot to add a flower or swirl. Get a little too carried away with smoothing the top and now it's too thin/uneven? Throw a few sprinkles on there. And #6. Cake decorating is only hard if you make it hard. Just have fun with it, and don't worry if it's not exactly perfect. At the end of the day, you've got a cake to eat. That's all that matters. 👍✌️❤

I agree with #6. I only make what I will lovingly refer to as 'chaos cakes'. They are chaotic, messy, uneven, patchy and fall apart easily... but they're wonderful because I made them. I'm no expert at baking, cooking is my forte, but I'll still put all I can into making a cake, for the sake of having fun

When decorating cakes, use all the frosting. Like, over frost it. You want to get it covered in a thick layer. Then you'll want to use something that is as tall as the layer of cake and slide that along to remove the uneven bits. The idea is that there's enough frosting on the cake that you won't reveal the cake part itself, even when removing a good bit of frosting. Experience: manager of a grocery store bakery that used to decorate cakes.

I'm not sure about the colour schemes they picked for the frostings - they're sorta headache coloured! 🤣 I'm guessing the frosting cracks as it shrinks, but the plastic base doesn't shrink along with it. Maybe they'll do a second series that works better ..? 🤞🤞

Nah, when I was a kid, I did care about making things perfect. I kept my dolls in mint condition and put them back in their boxes after I was done playing. I tried my hardest to color between the lines. And I was upset I didn't have the skills to draw a portrait of my mother for mother's day. Some kids do very much care about making things perfect. I'm not sure how much, but they exist.

Was a cake decorator for almost 8 years, as a beginner you did an excellent job. If you want smooth edges, start by icing the top then the sides. Also recommend instead of the spatula it came with, use a piece of cardstock or cardboard.

The increasing panic and the "Oh, sugarsnaps!" made me giggle. 😂 The cakes really got better each "round". The first one was allover the place, colourwise, and the popsicle kind of irritated me. The second one I liked much more, and didn't even mind the panda, but I think both the style and your decorating skills reached their peak moment with the third one. This is a fun kit, but I think i would be fairly easy to make something similar with wall spackle, food dyes, craft glue, beads and such, you could maybe decorate round recycled plastic containers. The decorations looked like craft foam, which is both pretty cheap and easy to cut into all kinds of shapes. But if you want to do this with as little mess as possible, this is probably an okay choice.

As an avid home baker I have decorated many cakes, and this video is a very accurate depiction of the challenges of working with buttercream. It takes a lot of practice to get it to look smooth and even (and Jackie’s instinct to use a turntable while holding a straight edge on the side is the correct technique). I love the idea of this kit as a means of inspiring kids to take up baking as a hobby - it will give them a chance to get used to working with frosting (and maybe vent all their frustrations early, long before they have to worry about messing up their daughter’s birthday cake on the day of the party 😱)

Im still in the beginning, but to get it smooth, have excess on the cake, then with very gentle almost no pressure, go around. Cleaning off your tool as you go. Crisp corners on top same principle, pull from the edges to the center with barely any pressure and a clean tool every time. For a square cake edges go from one side then the other. I was taught with an offset spatula but ive seen people use paint putty knives (never used for paint obviously) also never touch the bare cake without frosting but when smoothing you want a clean tool

When I was little, my mom decorated cakes. You know, I think it would be less expensive and more fun to just decorate a real cake with real frosting. 😂 She gave me mini scrap cakes to decorate (if she had to level the top of a cake for example) or would let me help her smooth the frosting or pipe it when I got older. It’s fairly easy to fix a small piping error. 😊 Thanks for the nice memories Jackie! 😂

I used to frost carrot cakes for restaurants, not decorating just the frosting, we did 150 cakes per batch so you wanted to do it quickly, but smooth. I would glob a bunch of the frosting on top, and then flatten it out send frosting cascading over the sides and then smooth that out with a with a flat edge.

When you do a normal cake use uncolored frosting to form a base layer almost like a glaze make it thin and scrap the excess up onto the top and hold your spatula to the cake as your turning the turn table and it'll scrap off the excess use the excess and do the the top. It's also alright if the base coat is full of crumbs.

I feel like, as a Dane and specifically a Fynbo (from the island called Funen) I am obliged to say my favourite pastry is Brunsviger! And I do love Brunsviger, though it's probably way too sweet and sugary for Jackie🙈

For smoothing cakes, you can get a plastic scraper you can use in DIY for filler! Mam has loads in her cake decorating hoard. This kit would be awesome if they included Collectable miniature decorating tools, piping bags, nozzles etc! You should try cake decorating!!!!

I decorate cakes and for a beginner you really didn't do half bad! Especially towards the end. Like art there's really no "right" way to de ornate a cake. It's aret in and of itself. It's just edible art. I think it would be fun to watch you do an actual cake.

Use a ruler to smooth the cream. Make sure it’s parallel with the cake and turn. It will give you smooth sides and do the same for the top

From what I learned in culinary, use your flat tool you was using for the frosting and drizzles and push it up to not wasted it but also have enough

Am I the only one that would get all the sets and mix and match them? The pandacorn would have been adorable on the blue cake with white icing and stars/ fun shapes.

try using a regular kitchen knife for smoothing frosting. Stand the flat side against the sides of the cake and just go around. Real frosting, wet the knife to smooth it more. It would be cool to see you try to decorate a real cake and try to do frosting and fondant art!
