For those of us growing up in the 70's, how lucky were we to have such awesome music to touch our lives?

So, my mother actually went to high school with the song this girl was written about. She was friends with her and she was very into dance. They lived in L.A. And so the part where she turns back and says, "the Boulevard is not that bad." The other part is about her singing a song. My mom said, she would walk through the halls singing to herself all the time and was always in her own world. She always always wanted to marry a rock star and she married's Burnie Taupin who wrote with Elton John. So I hope that helps you on the lyrics.

My favorite EJ song is NEVER anyone else's favorite, but it touches me more than any of the others- Someone Saved My Life Tonight. It's when Elton was suicidal and Bernie Taupin saved him.

Bernie Taupin wrote this about his girlfriend at the time. Elton and Bernie had recently come to America, LA in particular....she was literally the seamstress who did the costumes for the band at the time.

This song wasn't a huge hit when it came out,( it did OK ),... But it's almost always 'Top 3' ,in people's favourite Elton John songs... A timeless classic...

Two things I hate about this song... I cannot listen to it without singing along (nobody wants to hear that) and I always get choked up when I hear it. One the greatest songs.

In the movie, "Almost Famous"(2000), there is a point where on a tour bus, everyone is pissed off at everybody else... and then this song comes on the radio... And little by little, everyone eventually joins in and sings their heart out! It is the best scene in the movie! P.S.: I highly recommend that movie to anyone who has any interest in the rock scene of the 70's... Kate Hudson is sublime!

If you haven’t already, you must see the movie “Almost Famous”. This song plays a big part in that movie. Great movie loosely based on Cameron Crowe’s time as a young writer for Rolling Stone magazine, tasked with following an up and coming band in tour.

The song was about Bernie Taupins wife, and observations from their time in LA. One of the most beautiful songs ever written. A timeless classic.

The 70s were the high water mark for recordings that were masterpieces. There is great music in 2020 and there are some of the most amazing musicians who ever existed in 2020, but there was some undeniable convergence of artists, technicians, innocence, self-destruction, technology and an industry that was willing to take risks that served these albums up on silver platters. While I'm not here to knock what is now, I have yet to hear that level of greatness that leaves you speechless with the same ubiquity that I took for granted in my younger years.

I keep telling you, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" is the essential Elton John song.

Elton John, in the early 70's was putting out master piece albums every 6-12 months !! Albums that mere mortals would have been satisfied to produce one in their entire lifetime, if ever! He and Bernie delivered a string of albums in the early 70's that has probably never been equaled in rock music EVER. That is why is held in such high regard. His voice then was impeccable, and he is a piano virtuoso !! Nuf said. Thanks for digging i Andy and Alex !. He and Steely Dan from this time period are the gold standard to which others aspired

I was born in the 80s, but I often wish I’d been a teenager in the 70s. What an incredible time for music and western culture in general.

The strings arrangements in this song are just stellar. The entire album is spectacular.

I want to give you two some kudos. A lot of reaction videos involve the person listening to the song and not saying much afterward other than "man! wow! oh boy! That was good!" and that's it. I like how you two actually review the music, lyrics, feelings, etc. and discuss what works and maybe what doesn't but in an honest and respectful way. There's actually substance to your videos. I'd forgotten how good Elton voice was, my late hubby bought this album and I thought he was going nerdy on me,until I sat down with him, my wine, blunt and rocking chair....I went to nirvana in my music room,!

The lyrics are about Bernie Taupin’s, the (genius) lyricist’s wife at the time, who indeed sewed clothes for the band, and had been a ballet dancer.

You guys should definitely listen Carole Kings album Tapestry. Try "It's too late". Now, that is some of the best music ever written.

Elton has so many good songs that it's hard to choose - "Rocket Man", "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", and "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" are beautifully melancholic romances. I'm a big fan of the original cut of "Madman Across the Water" with Mick Ronson on guitar. "Levon" is a lovely one, as is "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters". Some deeper cuts include "Border Song (Holy Moses)", "Amoreena", "Where to Now St. Peter?", "I Feel Like a Bullet (In the Gun of Robert Ford)", "Harmony", and "Salvation". "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", "Take Me to the Pilot", "Rock n' Roll Madonna", and "The Bitch Is Back" stand as some more rocking tracks. And, yes, "Bennie and the Jets" is great.

This song IS about a real person. Bernie Taupin’s (Elton Johns lyricist) first wife Maxine who was the seamstress for the band. This is his love song to her.

I’m going to step outside the great choices everyone else has suggested and put forward “Take Me To The Pilot.” That’s my personal favorite and always puts a smile on my face when I need it most.

When this song first came out the love of my life ( who remains the love of my life and we will be holding hands until the end) was a tiny little 4 ft 11 in Italian girl of only 17 Who Loved hanging out on the boulevard after midnight in San Jose California. I'm sure you can imagine that through the years this phone has always been very special to me. My Tiny Dancer still lays me down in sheets of linen.

This song is in the pivotal scene from the movie Almost Famous. I noticed a fan sent that movie to you in your last mail video. Definitely watch it, maybe even do a reaction for something a little different. It's a semi-autobiographical story written and directed by Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Say Anything). He scammed his way to write for Rolling Stone at age 15. They sent him on tour with Led Zep, Allmans etc, and his mom let him go! Crowe says 95% of the movie actually happened. A must see.

Elton's voice and piano + Bernie's lyrics = music perfection. Sublime.

And this song is a good example of why Elton John was one of the top musician/performers of the early 1970s...he would often compose the music for Bernie Taupin's lyrics in one sitting!

In all the high points of Elton John's musical output of the early'70's, this is near Everest. The whole Madman Across The Water album is brilliant.

Elton John's album "Tumbleweed Connection" is maybe his greatest album; seriously every track is worth hearing, and there aren't any overplayed moldy oldies

I was a child in the 70s, teen in the 80s. Imagine as a child, no cassettes or digital music in the family station wagon, only radio. We got to listen to all these classic songs on the regular. This was our music. Memories of my childhood. Too young to fully appreciate it at the time, but knew that I liked what I was hearing.

Probably Elton and Taupin's most romantic songs ever. And one of the most beautifully done.

For me, as soon as Elton starts singing I get lost in time. With that being said I absolutely love the opening verses leading into chorus. The combination of his voice and the lyrics themselves... “Turning back, she just laughs. The boulevard is not that bad” Something about that I just love. And this line... “Looking on, she sings the songs The words she knows, the tune she hums” Like you said, it’s poetic. And then you get to the chorus and get chills. I definitely get lost in the entire song though. I’m still campaigning for studio version of “The Musical Box” by Genesis (1970) It’s a face-melter.

You're right Andy, about the drummer. Nigel Olsson is not a flamboyant drummer, but he is a perfectionist. Every drumbeat is immaculate in the context of the song. He plays like he is fine tuning the feeling of the music.

OK, i just had to comment on the rabbit hole I went down with this one. I loved your review, but then I saw the comments about the song being used in "Almost Famous," which I had never seen. Being the curious soul that I am, I had to look up the clip on KZfaq. That one clip made me and my wife immediately purchase the movie and watch it that night. WHY HAVEN'T I SEEN THIS INCREDIBLE MOVIE BEFORE?! And then KZfaq suggested another video for me... a 20-year online cast reunion. *Sigh*. That's 20 years that movie should have been in my life. Hey, I'm SO glad you listened to some Elton John! A few months I requested him before you ever did any of his content. So happy to see this video and that you enjoyed this legend! *I have a personal story to share about Elton.* I'm a 21 year old girl. When I was 16, I became an Elton fan through THIS song, "Tiny Dancer". I really loved how his piano playing spoke to me as a fellow pianist, and his voice was so sweet. I couldn't resist. Fast forward a few years, and I was a hardcore fanatic of Elton John's. But I was also depressed. I didn't know at the time, but I am bipolar. I fell into a dark hole at 18 and decided that ending my life was my only option. So I tried to do it. I ended up in the *emergency room for 12 hours and a psychiatric hospital for a week,* fighting for my life literally. What got me through was a book I had, that Elton wrote called "Love Is The Cure". It's about his addiction to drugs, alcohol, and all these other problems he had to overcome in 1990. I realized that if Elton became clean and could do it, I could fight my depression, too. So I did it. I made it out of the hospital and the first thing I did was write Elton a letter how he inspired me to change. I sent him the book I had and asked him to merely sign it. A few weeks later the book came back. Not just signed- *he wrote a letter inside.* ELTON JOHN, an WORLD FAMOUS SUPERSTAR took time out of HIS DAY to write all this to a RANDOM FAN such as myself. I was crying for days. I couldn't believe it. You know what Elton told me in that letter? He said, "Miracles happen, and you are living proof." I will never forget his words because they have changed my life in so many beautiful ways. (I have a video of me opening the book for the first time on my channel.) Elton is such a wonderful, adoring, loving person. I was so emotional when you listened to this song for the first time, as this song took me down the best path I could ever choose in my life. I'm so thankful I heard it when I did. By the way, the drummer of this song is Nigel Olsson. I have seen Elton live 6 times and at one of the shows, I was given Nigel's drumsticks by Kim Bullard, their keyboardist!!! He's a legendary, highly-respected drummer. I also shook Elton's hand at a show once- and let me tell you- it FEELS LIKE YOU'RE TOUCHING GOD. I don't know what that really feels like, but take my word for it. It was heavenly! If I could suggest another song for y'all, it would be a *duet of Elton John and Collective Soul called, "Perfect Day".* I'm not even going to tell you how special the band Collective Soul is either. I think you need to go into the song without asking in a poll. It's an unknown song, yet it was done with Elton John and an alternative rock band... it's INCREDIBLE to say the least.

This song is musical CHURCH for me. Everything about it is elevated, orchestrated perfection.

This was one of the first albums I ever bought. It cost $3.99 and I paid for it with babysitting money. At $1 an hour, it took 4 hours of kids to get it, but worth every minute. Every song on this album is incredible. You should do this entire album, guys.

Saturday Nights Alright, "geeeet a little action in"

I was 19 in 1971. I met the love of my life. I had to leave for college. He gave me this album and two others by Elton John. I missed him so much I played the albums all the time, crying and writing him love letters. He moved to San Diego to be with me. We moved in together, we married in '73, we had 25 years together. "Your Song" became our song...he had blue-green eyes...I was a poet and loved to sit on the roof. I miss him right now, just watching you two sweet guys as you listen to this music for the first time and your faces say it all. Peace and love, guys....peace and love!!!

It's hard to think about someone reacting to Elton John. He was so big when I was growing up, he almost has his own genre, like Elvis. Some of these were very overplayed, but still beautiful. My favorite EJ song is Honky Cat.

Madman Across the Water is the most underrated banger that Elton has. Incredible. If you do it, you won't be disappointed.

All I can say is we were so freakin spoiled in the 70s.

When the lyrics say, "Softly.... Slowly... Hold me closer.." the drummer ever so slightly ritards the tempo. It's very subtle but it just makes that transition. Great!

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road!!! His best song, IMO. Another world class chorus but with better verses. This song is the pinacle of melody. You can quote me on that and you will agree 100%.

Elton's band, Nigel Olsen - Drums, Dee Murray - Bass, Davey Johnson - Guitar, and later Ray Cooper - percussion, were VERY underrated. They added so much to Elton's songs.

Tumbleweed Connection one of the greatest albums of all time

My wife and I adopted a little girl in 2010. This song is her song in my mind. There's something about watching a 3 year old dance with joy and freedom. This song makes me flash back over our time together. It hits deeply in the best of ways!

The late Paul Buckmaster, a concert cellist, arranging all the fascinating orchestral arrangements on many of Elton's albums. Said that we have lost him. He also worked for David Bowie, another great loss.

You need to hear this song in a stadium with 80,000 people singing ever word at the top of their lungs...............
