Lara Nobel has always had a natural tendency to problem solve, so when she found herself at the bottom rung of one of the world’s least affordable housing markets, she immediately started brainstorming alternatives. In this talk Lara shares how she was able to innovate, creating one of the world's best tiny houses.
Lara Nobel has always had a natural tendency to problem solve, so when she found herself at the bottom rung of one of the world’s least affordable housing markets, she immediately started brainstorming alternatives. With an optimism that’s grounded in tangible solutions, Lara has travelled the world studying urban design solutions in Berlin, micro-housing in Tokyo, and alternative housing in Portland. She’s now developing a new type of compact housing in Australia - one that’s driven by our needs rather than market expectations. Leading by example, she has co-founded a company to produce these affordable ‘tiny houses’.
After completing a Masters in Architecture, Lara transitioned to an apprenticeship in carpentry to gain some hands-on experience that would aid her new venture. She is now near the end of this apprenticeship and last year won Apprentice of the Year.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Your tiny home is beautiful and functional. You offer fabulous ideas for sustainable homes. I agree that tiny homes are not for everyone. However, the idea that we should build only what we need is pertinent to all new home construction. We can all live without that fourth bedroom and probably the third as well. Great job, Lara.

I have been pushing the idea of tiny homes since the 70s in Australia, to anyone who would listen, but when councils / developers and builders get together to force people to build a certain size home, it's a up hill battle, councils can be belligerent about not passing plans for houses under 50 Sq Mtrs , but they won't pay your power bill to heat these monsters houses.

I love my big home. I am very grateful for it. It's over a hunder years old. It's where I feel at peace. I always feel a sense of judgement from friends who have insisted "but you dont' USE it all". I kind of stop texting them. It's not their business and they don't get me. I don't use a ton of energy, I have things weatherproofed. I know everyone can't have this, I"m very grateful for it. But I don't like 'friends' who tell me I should 'downsize' and live in a "new' and 'no maintainence' home so I can spend all day talking to people I don't like, and 'traveling'. Traveling is awesome, if you like it. I like being in my home, that's what I like. They judge me, tell me "if I just TRIED something different, I would like what they like. My lifestyle isn't for everyone, but it's mine. So I"m so impressed by this woman and her resistance to pressure from others. This is to be celebrated. This tiny house movement is amazing and can do so much good. But don't use it to throw at your friends who love their homes. It will alientate them from you, if it matters.

Greedy governments, utilities,contractors, material suppliers will never give building inspectors permission to grant tiny house permits. Simple as that , you and your family are income for the elite of the system. The SYSTEM will fight this tooth and nail.

My husband and I are going tiny right now. Selling the big house so we can retire early and live a full life while we're still young enough to do so. I've been so surprised to see the large segment of tiny house population that are my generation. Almost like it's a revolution going on. Your home is gorgeous.

I love how you clearly and effectively communicate the misery we are building ourselves into. I have researched and taken a weekend long seminar on Tiny Houses and I do think they are very interesting in terms of opening up our minds to seeing how one can live a better life with a small space. However, for large and scalable solutions - I think Tiny Houses stacked on top of one another (in other words, medium density designer housing) will be fast more effective. And also create opportunities to live and work close by.

Not sure if it’s anything you had in mind when commenting this, but your idea of stacking tiny homes made me think of Habitat 67, a piece of brutalist architecture in Montreal that I recently fell in love with. I recommend looking it up if you’re interested.

I think it depends how many people you have in a household. Often times, people purchase 5 bedroom houses and only a couple are planning to live in it.That’s four empty rooms and this is where the whole waste argument comes in. Simplicity and minimalism are beautiful qualities that people can learn to accept and adapt to.
@michah321

If you like that, I think that's great. But not everyone likes that or wants it. I've had friends judge me for my bigger home, but they travel all the time, putting money into jet airlines that use tons of fuel, huge resorts, cruises, sources of enormous waste. Yet they judge me for my 100 year old home that I love. They go on about my empty bedrooms, yet I've flown 4x in my whole life. You aren't doing that. I'm just saying, I"m not a minimalist, I'm happy not being one.
@misss9092
@misss9092 3 жыл бұрын
@@michah321 Each to their own. I don't judge people who aren't minimalists. I myself never claimed to be a minimalist and I am not entirely, but there are materialist things I've decided that I don't need, like too many clothes and shoes, handbags and just irrelevant items which a lot of people do judge me for, thinking that I have no ambition, which isn't true.I am a minimalist in that sense. My ambitions are to travel and one day have a house of my own. I live in a small house with 6 other people which is overwhelming for me, especially as someone with Asperger's syndrome. Small spaces are just suffocating. I'm glad you're happy with your house; ignore the naysayers.

We need to start changing the way we live and how we do things. But the 1% basically controls everything. Do we really need a 5 bedroom double garage style homes? And spend the rest of our lives knowing we may not pay them off. Homes have gotten more expensive, and alot of people/families can not afford to live. I also agree with the amount of energy needed to build these big homes, and the amount of waste produced. I would rather live in a place just big enough. A kitchen, bathroom and an open space. Nothing more. Affordable, have it paid off in less then 10 years.

While I agree that home sizes with become smaller, and their layouts will become more clever, I think that this tiny house on wheels phenomena is not going to last the test of time. I can, however, imagine homes that are half the size of today's homes that will function well for families, and remain viable as the homeowner ages and living requirements change. I think that these houses will be on mostly shared properties with community priority over personal space, though I don't believe that personal space will completely go away. While I understand the trick of using tall ceilings to make one feel like they are in a larger space than they actually are, the cubic ft/m to heat and cool remains larger in proportion to its floor area. I think that we'll see a return to reasonable ceiling heights, but with more floor area in the future.

Why I don't live in a tiny house: it's more expensive than the normal house I already own. Between building costs and space rent, and the cost of the vehicle that would be required to pull it, it's cheaper to keep my house than build a tiny house. Although my house isn't large or fancy, either.

Solar power, you don't need to move it constantly, they cost on average $20k for a basic one self built and maybe $70k for a really good one, which is like 1/4 of the average house cost, there's less to spend on and rent differs on yours situation.

including myself, a lot of people can only dream. this sounds great and all, but what if government passes laws that force the people into mortgages and debt? and banks don't finance tiny homes. municipalities refuse to allow trailer homes or building permits for tiny homes on foundations. what then? it looks like a great dream, but somehow i doubt it is going to happen in reality anytime soon. where i live, the median home price is half a million dollars. how will a single person ever be able to afford a home. for a lot of people, the future is looking dark and bleak.

Yet - you need less space if not everybody had a tiny house but lived in a small apartment. If you stack people you save so much space! And it is more ecological, too, you need much less heating with neighbours over and under and beside you. A small apartment is cheaper, more environmental, but I guess it is nothing for hipster.

price, its cheaper to build a tiny house compared to a regular house. Even a small one, then you have maintenance, heating/cooling costs are higher for a house . Your stuck at that location, maybe with a long drive to work. And one day can be used as a vacation home or guest house if they decided to buy something larger.
