Will adding more magnet power to a cheap chinese wind turbine give more amps? Lets find out!

Reduce, reuse, recycle are only part of the solution. People always forget that adapt, modify, rebuild are parts of the whole. I like to tinker with things like this too. I have found a lightplant stanchion that I'm trying to aquire to add a wind generator to my RV for winter. I don't have the advantage of a piece of dirt to plant a pole in and here in Canada we don't get enough sun in the winter for solar to be enough. Looking forward to the results!

Awsome comment Darrin thanks for your support. there is a place in every town where the car vs pole victims go. - they have stacks of slightly damaged tapered pole sections. get three or four of those and reassemble them without the top curved piece and you have your tower. Mine was a 5m shadesail pole from a school, free. topped with a 2.4 m scaffolding section .

@@t.h.o.r. Have you seen the diesel powered portable light towers the use on road construction sites? With telescoping poles that fold down? I have access to a couple of them. They have been removed from the genset so the genset can power a forest service camp. I just need to figure out a base to have it stand on my trailer frame.

@@darrinrebagliati5365 I'm off-grid 😻 in UK.. Incase you didn't know angling the panel's.. to noon sun (not necessarily 12 o'clock) is about 5 times more power. Regarding the turbine they don't necessarily need to be that high up, it's anything blocking the wind the same with solar.. One trick or game you can play is... Find the wind tunnel.. There are places.. buildings, tree's, hills and valleys etc where the wind gets funneled and becomes strong. Another thing I do forget to do is keep the panels clean.. give a wash when the panel is cool.

@@mySeaPrince_ the valley I live in doesn't get much sun in the winter, especially in the trees that I'm in. I want to get at least 40ft up to take advantage of the funnels in the trees around me. And they seem to be most powerful above 35ft here. In the summer I'm usually in a gravel pit somewhere and don't have to worry as much about solar because it's more open. And no trees around means wind can be at 20ft up easily depending on location. That's why i like the portsble light tower stanchion. Can adjust the height from 20-50ft easily.

I did a 1.4 to 1 chain drive and did get a little power out of it. If it was in a good wind spot it may do ok. I put 3 wider and little, longer blades on it. It still starts in low wind.

Why didn't you spin the rotor with a drill and measure the output and rpm before and after the modification and compare the two? Also, wouldn't it have been easier to just put 6 magnets on each side to start with?

Waiting to see if what you did helped. Not pushing, Just wishing you good wind. If I add magnets, I will not do this. I plan to try a 1.4 to one gearing. That might be a little too much. Might be to slow but it has 5 blades. Not sure what these things should run at. But as fast as it could go it did nothing hooked up as it should be. I would be glad to see 4 amps like yours.

I'm by no mean an authority on the subject of magnetism, but I appreciate your content and so will say that your attempt to increase output has likely hampered it. You've redirected the magnetic flux *away* from the coils. If you think of the flux like electricity that wants to move through the path of least resistance, by adding those magnets at 90 degrees away from the coils, most of the flux now travels along the path of the magnets and then through the rotor disks. You've likely heard of a halbach array. If you could remove all magnets and reinstall in a halbach array configuration you might see more output?

The next couple of weeks will see- depending on the wind. there is nothing today - just pelting rain. But my tanks are almost full overnight! haha. Ive asked 3 Ebay sellers to clarify the flux direction of their bar magnets so that I can get the correct ones in there. This isn't over yet lol.😁

I have to second that. While one might think, that an increase in magnetic field (stronger magnets) would result in a higher generator output, there are more things to consider. First, and here is the biggest problem, the orientation/direction of the magnetic field vector. This vector (H in literature) is supposed to point in a particular direction. By adding your magnets (on the face of the rotor) you now have given this vector an additional axial component. Meaning that the magnetic flux vector (B) is now not directed as intended in order to induce current in the stator windings. Given an ideal system this might not cause much trouble. However, in addition the magnets on the lamination stack of the rotor now also influence magnetic flux within the rotor. The round holes in the lamination stack are there to reduce magnetic flux across the rotor. The added magnets now counteract this design and act as a low resistance magnetic conduit. So, I too can not see any way in which this modification improves performance. To the contrary, I see a lot of problems. Keep tinkering.

I could not find the curved magnets- current challenge is finding axially fluxed bar magnets- everything seems face fluxed. Oh and no wind this week or next week according to the forecast. All I can tell you so far is that I now have very slight cogging felt at the hub but not out at the blade tips. It starts and cuts in charging at the same speed- but no amps readings yet

I built my wind turbine towers such that they hinge and have counterweight, so I can raise and lower them with one hand . . . Even in wind. Even at that, they all simply turn transmissions, transferring the power lower to the ground. Much safer doing it that way. All my turbines pump air. I find it easier to make electricity using a consistent supply of air, instead of trying to second-guess Mother Nature.

If you want highest efficiency, use a high voltage coil. The force required to spin it is less. Its the electromagnetic equation, then step it down to 12v and you have more power.

I now have very light cogging and DOUBLE the amps when the wind is belting at 20mph. but still it reaches the point where the blades flutter at terminal velocity - so I think that it is as good as I can get without changing the blade setup. example: swapping to a 3 blade hub. I did order a 3 blade hub but the twats sent me a 5 blade hub and refused to replace it unless I sent the wrong one back at my expense.

yes- Ive replied to several people here telling them how it now has slight cogging, but still starts well. Its autumn here now and after having it sit almost stationary all summer its doing its stuff right now in the dark My batteries are topped off even though its been grey and rainy all day and the solar hardly contributed. Because both systems feed the batterys its hard to quantify the turbines contributions exactly. But standing watching the screen on a windy day Ive seen that it now feeds in at 2.2 amps on occasion - It seldom used to reach 1 amp charge before I added the extra magnets. Its theoretical output is 4.1 amps at max wind speed. I did witness an actual event where the blades reached terminal velocity and fribulated and I was there to see a momentary 4 amps on the screen
