I just bought one of these and that's a pretty clever jig. I'll be making one of those, for sure. Cheers!

I'll have to make one of these jigs, so much simpler to set up. How about a video on sharpening the cutter? I have the same fly cutter and never have much luck getting it to cut well now that is a couple years old.
@TabLeft

i might just do that!

I think I'll look at getting one of these fly cutters the next time I need to drill large holes.

Well done. I'd look more into this to see if nothing like it has been done. Maybe even pull the video. Could be brought to market... I like the way you think bro keep it up!

. Thank you. More than I ever knew but two questions: what did you do to make the digital calipers deduct half the drill bit's diameter from the actual jaw spacing width? Also, where would a wood guy find appropriate tool stock to replace a badly burned cutter?

Great tip. Would it be improved if the jig was just the opposite so the screws would face up and you could see the measurement when tightening them? Thanks. JimE

@TabLeft 7 жыл бұрын
that was the original plan but the geometry of the bit is such that if you want the flats on the bit to lay flush with the ruler it has to be oriented the other direction. It could of course be calibrated to match with the sloping taper on the other side but its easier to read in this orientation, and is read from the same points you would use when setting with the caliper.

Did you tap that screw at the end of the bar to prevent the cutting assembly from fly off?
@TheTexan83

clever, and simple enough I wonder why the bit doesn't come with one or why the manufacturers don't sell them as well...
@TabLeft

yeah seems so easy i cant believe i've never seen it before. i googled around a bit and couldn't find anything similar

I could be wrong but if you have half your bit size, which is right, then you add one inch don't you cut a two inch hole? If that is the case then your ruler on the jig should have been placed a two?
@TabLeft
@TabLeft 7 жыл бұрын
Well in this instance are measuring radius not diameter. Geometrically speaking radius is a more accurate descriptor of a circle than diameter so i tend to default to that, and using radius means that you will use the same measurement regardless of whether using the jig or calipers so its just more consistent for me. that being said it could obviously be made either way depending on your personal preference. Edit: good point from Stefan below as well. that would require the use of a 2:1 scale which isn’t as easy to come by
@stefanrusek2322
@stefanrusek2322 7 жыл бұрын
If you wanted to make a diameter scale, you'd also need to create a half scale ruler, that measured 2 and 1 inch, 4 and 2 inches, etc.

Chisco Garcia Gonzalez that’s more a test of the tool than the jig. This isn’t really a review of the tool, and I don’t plan to do another video of me just making a hole but it works fine I assure you.

Герман Петри reply don’t worry builds are coming back but I only do build videos of certain types of projects and I’ve been extremely busy this year and will continue to be so for awhile. I have several build videos lines up though after I finish a new xcarve review I’m working on. The tips are fast to shoot and easy to edit so I started them back up so there would be some content while I try to fit in the other stuff.

Wow, how about maybe giving a reason or 2? Why the Harbor freight version is so s*****? I've got one I've had for 7 years and never had a problem with it. could it possibly be the operator?
