Hello there, That is truly a magnificent automobile, and made right here in Massachusetts! There are some details I noticed which you may appreciate about it. Your Ghost is right hand drive, with the floor shifter mounted to the right of the driver's legs. The shift is a 4 speed, and as you say.. it can be difficult to get just right going up or down. The firewall mounted starting carburettor control is on the early Springfield cars, the later ones had a dash mounted control with 2 levers. The 1925 on up Springfield models were left hand drive [steering] with a center mounted 3 speed floor shift. They also went from 12 volt electrics to a 6 volt system that year. With some of those details in mind, I believe your beauty is actually a 1924 model... though I am unsure the in service date. Thank you for sharing this wonderful automotive artifact with us,
