One of the toughest parts of Kendo is 'fumikomi', or 'stomp strike'. This should hopefully make some interesting points for kendoka of all levels. Be sure to follow us on Facebook :)

"Rather than lift your foot really high, keep it low to the ground and move it forward, forward, forward and strike like youre a stealth fighter huging the ground avoiding radar detection from AWACS's." Beautiful description Bennet-san😎

@KendoWorld: Thank you for your efforts. The closest dojo is a 5-hour drive away and your tips of the week are like a lifeline for my own practice. Oh, great intro. :-)

Great video! I'm a five months into kendo and I'm practicing fumikomi constantly. This video really clears a few things up. I'm notorious for leaning into strikes. Keep the great videos coming!

We practiced briefly years ago when I was passing through Tokyo. I think this is an excellent series.

@ShuyuKoukin Gidday, a valid cut or 'yoku datotsu' in Kendo actually has a couple more requirements than just 'touching'. Its usually required that you must strike at the correct distance with sufficient force in high spirit. We will definitely give a better description in one of our upcoming videos as we are looking to start filming 'season 2' of TOTW this April. Thanks

Hmm, interesting. What I usually say when practicing is bring the leg up higher, and place it out as far as possible. Don't bend forward, keep the back straight, but really reach with the body, as if someone's pulling your chest. Many people push forward with their hips or their shoulders, but I was always told to move from the chest. Once the student gets the motion and feel of an exaggerated fumikomi, I shorten it to a standard fumikomi like it's shown here with the foot hugging the floor.

I found that I was leaning forwards too much and tensing my shoulders reflexively. When I started pushing forwards with my hips instead, I could relax my shoulders and keep my balance much better.

Thx again for this nice video. I will try to get that in the next training. My biggest problem is that every time i make a Fumikomiashi, i do a extra step with my left food in, as result i always or most of it to near on my opponent. I know it's only the head :) but it is so difficult to train this away :)

Oh gotcha, I thought you were meaning the front foot hurting which is from landing too far onto the toes. Good stuff in figuring it out ! You must be gearing up for shodan now right ?

This might actually help any martial artist on the topic of stepping in or "through". Often enough I see people stepping in with a bent upper body and therefore weakening... everything.

hey everybody, i have a question... how can i get faster to my oponent so he cant counter attack me ? if i for example are trying to strike a men.I think the key is wat he said about the left foot following quickly as posible after your right foot stamped on the ground but i dont know because i tried it some times at home and he makes me feel so stiff. Has anny body anny advice for me or opinion ? Thanks

Actually, a question. The last few weeks of constant fumikomi has caused a great deal of pain in the toes of my left foot. Any idea what may be causing this?

@zbvm I think Fumikomi and Surikomi are effecticely the same, like a split step! just like alot of other techniques that have different names but same meanings dependant on the particular art, in this case Fumikomi a swordsmanship terminology and Surikomi/Suriashi being a Karate terminology =) I get what ya mean tho about Fumikomi = 2 x Suriashi...

No worries! The pain was caused by the poor technique of pushing off the tips of my toes instead of the ball of my foot.
