Some basics tips on how to navigate using the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS), a compass, and a protractor.

One of the clearest explanations I've seen on KZfaq. An acronym I created to remember how to change the map azimuth (grid north reference azimuth or bearing) to the azimuth to be set on the compass ( magnetic north reference) is WAvES : West Add v East Subtract. (the v - is just a reminder that it an angle correction adjustment)

I bought the same type of protractor you use in the video and struggled in trying to understand how it worked (novice). After viewing your video multiple times I finally understand. Thank you so much!

Rather than using a straight edge, it is easier, especially in the field, use an old Infantry trick and use a piece of very thin string. Either take a very find drill bit and drill a hole or heat up a needle and melt a hole right at the intersection of the lines which go through the center of the protractor. Tie a knot about an inch from the end of the string and thread it through the hole. Tie another knot on the other side to hold it in place. Works like a champ!

Your welcome. I had a little to much information coming at me during my initial training years ago. I made this in hopes to stage off that problem for others. Another on here suggested more similar videos with one being night nav. I will be making some time for that with some road/trail based nav to avoid walking into a tree a night. And thanks for the subscribe...helps me to know people want more since I do just make these for fun, it keeps my motivation up.

Another thing to consider when using pace count is that you most likely did it on a flat, level surface. Rarely do these exist in nature aside from parking lots or open field. Anytime you are out in the woods, your pace count will vary. Especially up and down hils because that is slant range. But you will no doubt have to walk around fallen trees, small streams not on the map or other obstacles. This si where terrain association becomes so important. I use terrain association more than azimuth

I have to agree that terrain association is top in the importance list. My objective here was just to teach a very basic tip of the total in landnav. Maybe it is time for more vids. Thanks for the addition.

@jrlk2005 It should be the same across all services as everyone generally uses MGRS when on land. However, there are many options out there. I am sure if you ask they will tell you as they do not want people to fail. Also the map I used is a little junky so I will look at it. But normally the lines are numbered horizontally and vertically.

@Jaimie322 You using the military system then? Hands on really does make a difference. Practice helps to take that edge off. The vid here just shows some easy tips to keep you on track. There are many other options out there. I just tried to keep it as simple as possible. Let me know if you need more help.

Compass, adjust for magnetic declination: East is least (-), West is best (+). The purpose is to synchronize the compass to the map. Military lensatic compasses cannot be adjusted for declination. Some sport compasses may be adjusted and come with protractor and inclinometer. See annual declination on topo and update. Map may be out of dated. Get current declination at: /g www.ngdc.noaa.gov eomag-web/?useFullSite=true Topos, are read RIGHT and UP. Grids are divide into increments of 10. [RRrUUu (the lower case letter represent 1/10)]. Give position with six digits. On other maps: Latitude N/S from Equator. Longitude E/W from Greenwich. This given in degrees, minutes, and seconds. Map index show CONTOUR LINES and gives the distance between them. My left foot pace count with a 45 lbs load over average terrain is 66 paces for 100 meters (1,000 m = 1 klm). Calculate your own over a known 100 meter path. Use Ranger beads for pace count. Lower one of the 10 bead every 66 paces. When you have lowered 10 beads, lower 1 of the upper bead. These represent 1 kilometer. You may have 4-5 of the 1-kilometer beads. At intervals, depending on visibility and point of reference, you take another bearing and record coord, date, and time on the topographic map. If this is for a military application, do not write on the topographic map.
@anselmoalliegro4608 жыл бұрын
Incidentally, you cannot always travel on a straight-line. If you can distinguish a point in the bearing you follow that is on the other side of the obstacle, go to it and when you arrive continue your bearing.

It should ALWAYS be "Longitude" 1st (76) ---> to the right, then "Latitude" ^ Up 2nd (89), then do your 00/75 with the protractor....then the same thing for your 1st, 2nd, 3rd... points.

Good question... and no, the GM angle changes based on where you are on earth and what size map you are using. Generally on military maps you will find the GM angle on the lower right of the map. Sometimes I have seen it on the left. Hope that helps..;
@juliusdro4 ай бұрын
do you have to have the map set to magnetic north before using the protractor to plot your start/finish point and then use the compass to plot your direction of travel ??
@kraisydave12 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear... have you completed basic already then? Good luck to you if not.

Type in utm maps in a google search. You should see the third link as leware. Their software is an overlay for all google maps to give you utm. Mostly mine come from the military, but that should help you out. Let me know... Sorry as youtube does not allow links to be posted in comments.

Generally Angels in a statement like that means the altitude of the aircraft. 3 would be 3000 feet or say angels 1-5 would mean 1500 feet.

So with a ten digit grid the first two digits ((00)00000000) are read at the top of the map or x axis and the second two (00000(00)000) are read on the y axis or on the left margin of the map?

MGRS is the only map system I can use. It's been over 50-years, but I was the champ at land nav. Give me a Silva, and Army lensatic compasses, a 1:50,000 map and I'll go anywhere. Screw GPS. People who use GPS are fakers; a weak battery will get them hopelessly lost.

@kraisydave8 жыл бұрын
I would consider a normal one over the improved if you are using it for official testing like NCO or OCS school. Do not want to look like you are checking with 'special' tools no one else has. Really tho.... no biggie either way as long as the scales are correct. Good luck!
