If you tip wait staff at all, you will one day wind up doing it all the time. Unfortunately, that is how it snuck up on us in America. Even in America, though, people generally don't tip their daycare worker, no matter how good the service was, and daycare workers are on their feet all day, playing games, changing diapers and exhausting themselves. Daycare employees are underpaid, and nobody wants their child mistreated because they failed to tip the daycare worker, yet nobody does tip daycare staff, because no parent actually fears their child will be mistreated. They know the daycare employee who mistreats a child (regardless of whether that employee got a tip or not) would be fired. That's a good system to leave in place. If you like your daycare worker, give her a gift, not a tip. Don't get an expectation from them going in the first place.

tipping has gotten crazy here because the employer tells the worker that don't worry the pay is lower because you will get tips to offset the wage you are getting. so if someone doesn't tip they see it as their wages getting shorted

Don't get an expectation for tips started among employees in industries that aren't already tipped, so we won't wind up with the same mess we have now with the food service industry.

Yep and some other European countries too from what I remember with traveling. In most countries, you won't be given a check with the "tip" line, let alone be given those 18%, 20%, 25% options. To places where it's not rude, it's common courtesy but it's never forced (if anything it gives the incentive to give). The other day I was given a check with 18% fee included, said to support the LA minimum wage regulations and how it's not a tip. Baffling to say the least.

When I lived in Hawaii the more upscale restaurants decided your tip for you depending on the number of people in your party and what they ordered. I thought it was so sad because tipping is voluntary and you the customer decide your tip based on the service, not the number of people in your party. But most people just paid it so they wouldn't have to cause a scene about it. When we went, we told the manager to remove the mandatory tip from the bill as it was up to us to decide unless it was posted in public view how they decide tipping will be. He did remove it, but he wasn't happy about it, but we did tip the girl directly with cash because she did a great job and so she would have to share it unless she wanted to.

In Australia, they don't tip. Want to know why? Because THEY MAKE $26 AN HOUR. In America they make MINIMUM WAGE! Bartending and waiting tables in AMERICA is hard work and stressful. It’s mostly because they don’t/wont pay their employees so they rely on the customer. Imagine working for $2.34 and you’re on To-go orders for your shift. It’s actually disgusting that we go to work and slave for people and get nothing in return. $2.34/hr and then maybe $1-2 for a Togo order. Then the employer will chime in like they are good people and say, ”but if you don’t at least make minimum wage we’ll bump you up to that.” Umm…. Because you have to. Everyone else has deemed the food service industry as an industry like any other, and pays its employees accordingly. And everyone else gets by just fine with that notion. There seems to exist a confusing pushback against this in America, because; 'I don't want to pay more for food at resturants!' (though with the taxes, fees, and tips included, you already are. You just don't see the full price reflected on the menu when you look at it, so yay for phyocological games!) and (less commonly voiced but no less true), 'I'm making way too much money through tips, and I don't want to make less!' It's why servers in Key West often turn down management promotions, i.e, a decent job with a decent wage, to remain one. I went into a donut shop just this morning and ordered just one donut. Literally all the employee did was reach into the display case, put it into a bag and hand it to me...and they're asking me if I want to TIP? I'll grab the donut myself if it's that big of a deal. It's so hypocritical for employers to say to customers _"Want to reward our employees for excellent service?"_ when they're apparently not willing to do it themselves. Raise your prices (if necessary) to be able to pay your employees a decent wage, fine. But stop nickel-and-diming us customers.

I agree that many places have taken it to a whole new level, but when you go to a sit down restaurant, you are paying for the food. The tip is for the service provided- taking your order, bringing your drinks, refilling your drinks, bringing out your food, making sure you are having a good experience. Do you at least agree with that?

@@AK-uf5el A waiter/waitress providing you service is not them doing you a favor or something special. It’s literally their job to do that. Try and guess what’s on their job description. Take a wild guess. The fact that people feel they don’t get paid enough isn’t someone else’s responsibility to compensate. Tipping is not a legal requirement or obligation. Someone not tipping shouldn’t bother someone whether you like it or not. I personally do tip but I won’t judge someone on how to choose to use their hard earned money.

This is actually a common misconception - tipped employees do earn minimum wage no matter what. If the tips don't amount to minimum wage, then federal law states that the employer must make up those wages and pay the employee the difference. Basically, as stated in the video, tipping let's the employer pay their employers on the *customer's* dollar, instead of their own. This is directly from the US Department of Labor website: "If the employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference. Many states, however, require higher direct wage amounts for tipped employees."

Waitresses don't want a normal wage, they want to work off tips because most of the time they make more money on tips than they would with a normal wage. To add a stupid health and happiness tax on top of that is the height of absurdity. It's just the companies trying to get away with paying less money out of pocket so they can make more profit.

Whatever area you where in is even worse than I’ve seen living in the US. I have seen tipping in every restaurant, even fast food where they are not waiting on anyone. That is ridiculous enough! I have never seen it in grocery stores or where no tip is not an option. That’s just highway robbery! I am part of the movement to refuse this blackmail.

I agree completely regarding gouging, but also food quality. When enough trips left me saying, "I can do better at home for 1/4 the price." I stopped complaining and simply stopped going out period. As an American, I say amen! I will tip if I believe the individual went beyond the job requirements or if I asked the individual to do something extra. There’s no law in place anywhere that states I must tip regardless the quality of the service.

As an Australian I agree we have NEVER had a tipping culture although some places are trying to americanise and offer a voluntary tip but we say NO. it is the responsibility of the owner to pay their staff fair wages and if that means raising their prices so be it, it will be our choice as the consumer if we want to pay the price for that food/item. Should never be the responsibility of patrons or staff.

I don't mind tipping drivers, and Uber drivers are basically working on commission--they get paid by the jobs they accept, not hourly.

Uber Eats and Door Dash drivers are NOT paid by the company. Yes they offer drivers $2 for the order. But nobody in their right mind is going to spend $1.50 in gas to deliver you an order for $2. Not to mention they also have to pay taxes on that money. Sorry but your 'tip' isn't a tip. It's a bid for service. If you don't want to bid, then go pick it up yourself.

I don't know how it works at Uber Eats, but Door Dash delivery drivers make about $2 - $3 per order, and it can take 30 minutes to complete a delivery (they have to wait at the restaurant often times for 10 - 20 minutes for your food). Basically, they get paid less than minimum wage, and gas is not paid for. The $10 delivery fee (or whatever price) largely goes to Door Dash for the executives and the support employees, which there a lot of. If you don't put a tip on there ahead of time, no one will pick it up for a while. Sometimes 30 - 60 minutes after the food is ready. Why? Because DoorDash will send the option to all drivers in the area for $2 (no tip added). They all say no. Five minutes later, it is increased to $2.25. They all say no. Only after 30 minutes or so do most of these orders increase in payout that a driver will take it. Back in 2020, the minimum pay was $5. In one year, they lowered to $3, then $2. And right when the 2021 gas hike hit and doubles gas prices. DoorDash is greedy. Blame them, not the driver. Often, you think that it is the driver's fault for being late, so you don't tip. But it is the DoorDash system at fault. And so many people don't want to tip no matter how good the service is. They look for reasons to not tip. It takes 30 minutes to deliver, so they think to themselves, 'well it should taken 20 minutes. I am not tipping' It takes 20 minutes to delivery, they think to themselves, it should have taken 15 minutes. I am not tipping. Driver gets there in 5 minutes? Well I was in the bathroom, that is too fast. I am not tipping. Driver knocks too loud? That's rude. I am not tipping. Driver doesn't smile properly or smiles too much? 'What the hell is their problem?' I am not tipping. I asked for contactless delivery, but they handed me the food directly. So I am not tipping. They just left the food at the door, but I was going to hand them cash for a tip. Well it's their fault for leaving, so I guess I am not tipping. (You can't win. People look for any excuse.) Tip ahead of time and you will most likely get your food faster. Or if you can't afford it, go get the food yourself. If that seems like too much trouble, then consider that that is the reason you are suppose to tip in the first place: for service you would not want to do yourself.

I tried DoorDash once .. never again ! A subway footlong that was 14 at the restaurant cost 27 having it delivered !!.. I work 2 jobs and wanted my son to have sandwich delivered for dinner .., NEVER AGAIN 😱

I dislike the tipping culture here in the US, but you pay an average of $22 US for a meal with no tip, and here we pay an average of $15 for the same meal but are expected to tip. Either way, the customer is subsidizing the pay of the waitstaff.

What has happened in the US and many other countries is we no longer know who or why we are tipping. There is a minimum wage in the US (and all 50 states have their own too) for waitstaff and non-waitstaff. Waitstaff get a couple bucks an hour and then tips. Non-waitstaff get minimum wage. Then we get baristas, then counter service, then this, then that. We should only be tipping those who fall under the "waitstaff" exclusion and only get a couple bucks an hour. I just don't know anymore who that is.

I bet that most of their employees are only part time and don't even get any sort of health insurance. Might even only cover the healthcare for the owners. It's especially unnerving when a customer is lowly paid at some job that doesn't provide any benefits and doesn't get tipped for what they do while working their butts off, but then are being guilted into forking out all of these extras for others who never tip them. (Not necessarily that they should either.)

I think they want the bosses to pay more. Employees don't want to live off tips it's the owners who create a system where they get labor for pennies. The issues isn't to blame the employees we should be blaming the owners and the working laws that allow this to happen.

I went to pick up takeout Thai food at a local restaurant here in Redlands, California. I had already calculated the total before I went. The cashier handed me the little machine to insert my credit card and then she quickly took it back before I was able to pay. She said, “oh wait a second” and handed it back to me. Now the charge was even higher, so I asked her about it. She told me that she included a 20% tip, because it’s takeout. When I said, no, I’m not paying a 20% tip on takeout she said, “no problem”, took the machine back and changed it to an 18% tip. I haven’t been back to the restaurant and have no plans to return. 😡

Sadly no, a lot of them don’t. The employers now use that as an excuse not to pay their employees. If you’re a tipped worker you get $2.34 /hr. So now, they’ll put you on To-go and not bat an eye. That’s why you are asked to tip on To-Go orders. It’s get the restaurant out of paying someone an actual wage. I mean, pizza cooks and stuff like that probably make a decent wage but you never know. Some places take the servers tips and tip out the cooks and such. They make $15-30/hr, servers make $2.34

A tip used to always be an upfront thing. Tip actually is an acronym for "to insure promptness". However, I do absolutely agree it's become ridiculously out of control. When I was a server for $2.19/hr over 20 years ago, it was a stepping stone job for me. It's not meant to be a life long career choice.

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I gave a $20 bill for a $3 order at McDonalds & the employee asked if the rest was for her. I laughed thinking she was joking, but then she looked at me sad & said "I just didn't know." I was shocked. I don't know if laws have changed, but I used to work at Burger King 15 years ago & employees were not allowed to accept tips.

Sigh…this is not common at all. It is illegal as hell and the employees can easily file a complaint lawsuit and win. Recent case in the US and the biz was fined 300k which the judge divided up amongst 67 employees.

Unfortunately this guy is right. I tripped 20+% for since I could pay my own way. 3 people ordered 1x coffee at $2 each, each person threw in an extra dollar for tip that's 50%. Then my friend who waitresses broke down her pay scale and I realized how broken minimum wage laws are. I don't eat out - I eat at home. Simple,safe,I get what I want to eat,and it's cooked exactly how I like it. Yes,the employers are pretty much ripping off customers for money they should be responsible for. The employer will say they can't pay,that they depend on tips - if that is true then they should go into another line of business. I'm not about to cover what they should be obligated to pay their employees.

So because it wasn’t BURNT or CRAP you should pay extra? Or: A mediocre waitress serves you. She’s lucky not to get complained on about the poor service, and fired. But if the waitress is extra, ensuring my dining experience is pleasurable, then heck yes I want to leave her a tip to indicate my appreciation for her service. *I still prefer, and plan ahead for, leaving cash on the table. Even knowing I’m debit/credit the meal, I stop and get cash for the gratuity (which allows me to specify this for the cook/this for the server/this for bus staff). I’ve also NOT tipped a very poor server, but went and gave $50 to the cooks. Meal was great but my waitress ruined the dining experience with poor service.

A couple of years ago I saved myself the trouble, confusion, and expense. I quit going to restaurants entirely. I make all my meals, and on the rare occasion I choose to get take out, I make sure it's take out and nothing where I need to tip. I am on a tip strike. Like ypu I noticed the tipping culture is nuts. It seems everyone wants a tip for doing nothing or very little at all. I miss the days where fifteen percent was quite generous. But this twenty and twenty five percent is insane. But it's ok I am happier and healthier and save money at the same time. I really do feel bad for the servers who put in a hard day's work and don't get paid for what they're worth. I am done with modern day restaurant culture. The last time I actually sat down at a restaurant.My service was terrible.

Well to be fair, the Starbucks employee has no obligation to be nice and bubbly to you. They do that with the hopes of getting tipped. Once they know you aren't tipping them, why should they be nice? All they are obligated to do is take your order and give you your coffee. Why is it problematic that she stopped treating you overly nice? As for Applebee's, if you put your order in online and picked it up, you shouldn't be expected to tip more than a dollar or two in my opinion. But a decent tip should still be expected if the employee is making multiple trips coming out to your car, often in bad/cold weather, dealing with special requests such as extra sauces or if your order is just complicated in general, or even if they give decent hospitality such as reading back your order to ensure everything is included and correct and asking if there is anything else you need.

Like companies want people to have a pleasant experience and return so they expect their servers to be pleasant enough to make customers want to return. So yeah, she does have an obligation to be nice because that's part of the role she was hired for.

Delivery deserves a tip. Cost for using your auto is at least $1 per mile plus your time. Unless it’s built into the price. Which it may be. Those delivery companies are a massive rip off. They just take advantage of drunk and high people.

I still make sure to leave just a quarter if the server is rude,not present or STONED! else I tip based on the service and attitude sometimes generously.

I was raised by a single mother who was a waitress. I tip for table service if I get good service. I have been known to leave a penny for bad service. I never leave more than 20% max though. These servers that get paid $2 per hour often only pay taxes on their tips up to minimum wage (not all are like this) when often they make more than minimum wage with these tips. So they have money they make that is tax free . I sure didn’t make any money that was tax free when I was working!

@@Harley_Girl68I can't say that, when I was a server I was in college and made less than the minimum of $3000 required to have to file. So, I never paid taxes on tips. My issue is I used to be grateful for 10% and now 20% is expected. I recently had a conversation with a server who complained about how entitled patrons are. She cut my hair at the salon I usually go to. The woman who usually cuts my hair only charges me $10 since I get a buzz cut and it's quick and easy, this one charged me $20.

Talented educated people are forgoing moving into their careers because waitressing is more lucrative. When I leave a modest cash tip, it's my way telling the labor market that I'm okay with someone of mediocre intelligence/skills/appearance bringing me my food. Those with skills and capabilities that far exceed walking from kitchen to table with a plate of food should move on to those areas of the economy where their abilities will do more for society.

To be fair, the standard or living has gone up and money doesn't go as far as it used to. That it the main reason why it has gone from 10% to 25%. Meanwhile, server minimum wage has gone from about $1.50 to $2.23. It hasn't been raised proportionally with regular min wage, let alone inflation.

A lot of delivery places don't pay the service fee to the driver unfortunately... that service fee goes towards insuring the driver who is delivering their behalf so the tip is not the service fee. This varies per business and how that service fee is applied of course, it could go to the driver but you'd have to read the fine print. But yeah it's wrong to assume someone is tipping you and pocket your change...

Most countries don’t gouge servers on the backend like they do in the US. Half minimum wage, taxed on customer sales, and they have another 15-30% of their income to support staff. So have some compassion. It’s not the fault of the server. If you want to make a statement, complain to the manager, don’t punish the server

They should have a machine of their own and get it directly, like it used to be with a good ole cash. If a restaurant adds % to the price, just effing make it part of the price for the food! The same for adding tax on the grocery bill or any other bill in general shops, where the prices were displayed tax free on the shelves. I find it completely bonkers.

Here in the US, you really need to inspect your check. Your response is 100% correct. The only way this stops if tips get LOWER as a result.

you still pay for it in Australia, they just hide it in the bill. At least in America if the service stinks you can pay them less by tipping less. or on the contrary if the service is great you can pay them more by tipping more. the socialist one size fits all doesn't breed good service.

The "I'm only paid 3$/h" is a lie btw. Their employer only gets to pay that little if they make the rest up in tips.

I was fine with it for many years as we had the option to tip 15%-20% in lieu of having 25-30% higher prices which would cover the businesses cost of paying higher wages. As with many things, people have taken it too far. It used to be 15% for average service and 18-20% for exceptional service, now it's 20-22% for average service and that's on top of hugely inflated prices. A burger meal used to cost $8 at a sit down restaurant and now it's $18-$20 so your tip went up from around $2 to $5. Now the staffers who are paid a higher wage are also asking for 20% tips. My Nephew worked at Starbucks in college and made $17 an hour plus benefits, plus tips. He wasn't getting rich, but that's pretty good for an entry level gig. Not so good for customers who are paying twice.

Your explanation is exactly what's wrong with the tipping culture. Tip is not a reward for good service. It's a BRIBE for preference. If I go out to have lunch or dinner I want to relax. I don't want to bribe people just so they clean my table or don't spit on my food. That's ridiculous. LITERALLY Canada e the US are the ONLY country where this happens. Nowhere else you need to pay money for waiters not to spit on your food or clean your table. And waiters like to play the game "I'm poor, tip me good". In Canada a lot of waiters make more money then people with DEGREES!! For what? To take orders and bring plates to someone's table. Insane. It's been over 3 years I don't go to a sit down restaurant in Canada or US. I would rather cook my own. The extra work I have is way better than dealing with entitled disgusting waiters

I was also a waitress in the 80s and hated filling to-go orders. It took a long time because it wasn't a streamlined process because it wasn't common. If I got tipped, it was minimal but it took time away from my seated tipping customers. The total receipt probably also went to my total sales, which meant I'd be charged on 8% of the total for taxes. It depends on the restaurant and how they structure these sales, but for these reasons, I usually tip on takeout. PS we made $2.01 per hour.

I made $2.13 per hour in the 90s, and I think it's still that for tipped employees all these years later. It's madness.

Doing to go orders is usually a waste. It will take the time away you have for your tables where you can actually get a tip. Some businesses will have you pay for the meal if the people never came to pick up the order, that is why i didnt even answer the phone most of the time. You have to see how the establishment handles to go orders. If they do not have a to go station and a server has to do it then its good to tip, if they have a dedicated to go set up where they have their own set employees then there you really shouldnt have to tip cause thats the one job they have to do.

I still tip the standard 20% for GOOD service... I might throw in a little more for great service, and I always deduct any BS charge/tax on the receipt from the tip. That's the only way to counter this insanity, and maybe just maybe get the workers to stand up and demand their employers stop trying to gouge us so we can get back to thanking the individuals and not paying the entire establishment.

I would be pleased to have the manager come speak with me to discuss the extra line item. Unless it is clearly communicated on the menu that they give you, they are not entitled to add anything but tax. I’ve had all sorts of items that I caught on my bill and frankly, it bothers me that they behave in an unprofessional manner much more than the amount an unsuspected charge represents. My biggest pet peeve is when a manager attempts to lay something off on the employee as “their mistake”. [Ok, fair enough….who is responsible for approving that person to be employed and making certain they were properly trained prior to becoming customer facing? You are….perfect, did you review food safety with them or no? I am counting on several things from the people who intercede between me and my meal….is this the only employee that you train/validate or are you responsible for your chef, expediter, and food delivery as well?]. Point of clarification. It might sound like or seem that I am being rude and/or obnoxious but I am not….it is always with the intent of being a change maker. Pissing people off usually doesn’t accomplish much more than distracting them.

Love it when They Exploit it on Holidays; go to a Buffet Style, Self-Service Brunch and they have the Audacity to Add a Tip. Looks like Home for the Holidays.

If I ever notice any fee not discussed prior to (or during) placing my order, it will get removed. It isn’t legal. “Discussion” includes statements printed on menus and menu boards in full view but it does not include cryptic notes which could be disregarded as innocuous noise (handbills).
