When i started with Laserdisc i did it mainly for wanting to own movies with their original Colourgrading and Soundmixes and avoiding this 5.1 and 7.1 re-re-re-remixes that you get on DVD and Blu-ray. And also wanting to digitize everything and having a digital copy of the analog content of the LDs as well as having a bitstream-accurate digital copy of the PCM audio tracks on these discs which i am thankfully able to transfer as well thanks to the optical output of my LD player. Back in 2003 i stumbled upon a few online pictures of the japanese Laserdisc of "TRON" and at this moment i knew i wanted to start collecting this format. It took me 10 more years to actually start with it :D A fantastic hobby when you really love movies.

I mainly got into Laserdisc because of the high quality sound it offers especially with DTS titles I got into this format in the late 90s

The sound quality is a big reason why I love live concerts and music videos on the format.

Awesome. Depending on the release, that can be a massive upgrade in overall quality. Plus, LDs are simply fun to watch and have beautiful packaging.

I'm not on the twitter laserdisc groups. But i do Ebay and LDDB. I've gotten a lot of great deals. Most titles i have purchased for 10 to 15 dollars. The exception is box sets. Making good relationships with certain sellers and then doing repeat business with them doesn't hurt. Those deals you get burned on you don't do business with them again. They become persona non grata

Yesterday I just bid on several HK and Japanese laserdiscs! I’m always actively looking for laserdiscs! Great format but never had that chance to ever own or watch the format until recently!

Awesome! Same. It's a format I always wanted growing up, but only got a working player and started collection around 5 or 6 years ago.

They are heavy and easy to buy in lots, problem is you'll get some dud movies, but even with high shipping fees you can easily get a lot of 10 or 20 movies for 40 bucks or so...same with finding a player, honestly the degrade over time has been better than early DVD's as I have grain in some of the earlier titles on dvd

I'm doing inventory right now and some of these have never come out of their sleeves. As a former collector, these are in mint condition besides the corners. The discs themselves are flawless. No fingerprints. A great find. And the Charlie Chaplin collection is actually Charlie Chan 4 disc set. The player is actually a Panasonic, not a Pioneer.
@StefanHomberger
@StefanHomberger 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good lot. Depending on the disc, like new or new condition can fetch a much higher price. Panasonic players seem to be well thought of.

I just tested my Air Force One disc and all sides work. Upon inventory, I don't have Empire Strikes Back, but I do have 4 Batman movies, (the cover of the first one looked really cool with just the shield emblem), The Wizard of Oz and two Top Gun discs. I understand that you may not want the player, but if you're interested in the discs, I have made a list of what I have. I'm willing to send you one of the Top Gun discs, as a show of good faith, as to the overall quality of the discs. I remember when I was a kid and found out my local card shop was going through the packs of cards before they sold them to us, because they knew where the prime cards where situated in the box were. I have no intention of ripping anyone off, as they did us. I remember the feeling of finding great cards and cards I was looking for. I want to pass that on. Earn more Karma points. If you are interested in just the disc and give me a price that would bring you the feeling of finding a great score, so you can tell your friends, lets chat. Mike.

I went on eBay and averaged out the cheapest prices listed for each disc title that I have and then cut another 10-20% off of that. The total I came up with is $220 and I couldn't find the 3 karaoke discs and now 4 adult titles that I have. Apparently, the adult titles were $80 a piece back in the day because the bar code says so on each one. That is highly negotiable, of course. I'll wait a week or two to see if you have any interest, then I start to shop them around. The condition on most of these are near mint to mint. Corners are worn from moving all over the country, but inside jackets are crisp and clean.

Hahha, yeah, I'm always amazed when discs I get still have their original price tag on them; sometimes over $100 for a disc that now goes for $10 (and sometimes the other way around for the rare stuff!). I might be interested in the discs. Mind shooting me a PM of what discs you have? If it's too many that I already have, the Facebook group I mentioned might be an easier place to unload a collection with a player than Ebay (which might sell better with the discs split up into lots, & the player separate).

I want to sell my laserdiscs and player. I have a pioneer player and 69 discs. The variety of discs are a wide range from Charlie Chaplin collection set, Cleopatra, Air Force One, Empire Strikes Back, Ben Hur, 2 Karaoke discs, War of the Worlds, 2 adult discs, Sound of Music. You seem very enthusiastic as a collector, which I value and respect. If you would like a list of the 69 discs and model number of the player I have, please respond. I will only sell as a whole lot. As a former baseball card collector, corners on the sleeves are slightly rounded and semi white from moving. As I was typing this, you mentioned Air Force One. I will test my copy now to see if its a "Rotter".

A very tempting proposition, but sadly I can't add a collection with player of that size right now (not until we move to our new place). We added a ton of stuff this past year. If you don't want to break things up, you might get some good offers from the LaserDisc Forever Facebook group. A few thousand collectors in that group, and a bunch that I know are always looking for good lots and players.

Hey man awesome video and I might get into this format but before I do so I just need to know one thing, do all laserdisc's eventually rot even if it's a reralease from the 90s?
@StefanHomberger
@StefanHomberger 4 жыл бұрын
Very few LaserDiscs are susceptible to rot. "laser rot" is due to manufacturing errors that can be exacerbated by poor handling and environmental factors such as high humidity. Rot is mainly an issue with certain pressing plants & some specific releases. I now have close to 1,000 LaserDiscs, and only 3 in my collection have any signs of rot (and it is only bad on 1). My oldest LaserDisc is a DiscoVision ABBA disc from early 1980, and it plays perfectly. There are collectors out there with 10x my collection and very few rotters. Basically, if you get a copy of a movie that plays perfectly fine, it will likely last as long (if not longer) than a DVD copy, if taken care of.

Awesome! Welcome aboard. The best way to check titles for possible rot is to check the LaserDisc database website. Every disc has a chance of rot percentage based on collector feedback, and there is even a list of known titles that have manufacturing errors/almost guaranteed rotters.

I've had a bad experience with a lot of Pioneer Japan titles being rotters. Although DADC is the most known. And yes a title can be a non rotter or mildly rotted and years later you can take the disc out and find it is rotten or really far gone. I had a non rotter for Return of the Jedi from 1986 recently took it out and found it was rotten, had to replace it. I also recently bought a stack of James Bond Japanese discs. At least 4 out of every twelve titles were rotten, only 1 severely but even a mildly rotted title effects collectability and value.

No 1 tip: have a bottomless wallet. This was four years ago. The prices on discs now are absurd, especially on ebay.

Only on some rare or high demand releases. There are still thousands of movies and TV releases under $20. I recently picked up some I Love Lucy episodes and a few movies for less than $20 total, and have sold a bunch (including horror & James Bond) for around $3-$10 each.
