In this Photoshop tutorial, we cover tips for how to create more realistic shadows in Photoshop. First we cover a bit of theory on shadows-what are the different types of shadow and when does each appear based on the lighting. Then we show how to create the primary types of shadows-cast shadows, ambient shadows and contact shadows.
Hope you find it helpful! And you can also post other Photoshop questions you’d like answered in future episodes in the comments. We’ll do our best to get to them.

Very well explained, very good and friendly teacher. And the interlocutor was also helpful. Shadows, a topic I've been nibbling around with for a while in the area of painting and drawing. Here again the basic knowledge and connections explained, among other things, very good to remember it. Repeat repeat repeat in Photoshop (even with my slightly older version...) Thanks for this instructive tutorial!

Hi Ricard, love your demos for teaching myself PS!! You are always very clear and precise. I'm encountering an issue when replicating what you do at 19:21 when my PS won't let me transform the gradient shape I created and gives me a message saying "could not transform because the initial bounding rectangle is empty"....I searched the net high and low for an explanation/solution to no avail. What am I doing wrong? I'm using the latest PS version (2023). Can you help me? 😉 Thank you

Hey Florence, in the latest update of Photoshop, gradients became "dynamic" - meaning, they remain an editable gradient layer rather than pixels. For this reason, you can't transform a gradient without first rasterizing it. To do this, select the gradient layer in your layer palette, right-mouse click and then go to "rasterize layer." After that, you'll be able to transform the gradient. Alternately, you can change the mode of your gradient tool to "classic gradient" and it won't create a dynamic layer, instead simply adding pixels to your active layer which you can then transform.

Hi I’ve seen you use the gradient multiple time on an image, over and over, to add or delete part of the image, without creating more gradients, how do you do that, i don’t know if I’ve been clear to ask the question eg. when you where masking part of the background of the man with the shadow….

99% of the time that I use the gradient tool, I use the preset "foreground to transparent." This allows me to use the gradient tool as many times as I need, with each gradient layering on top of the previous one. Hope that answers your question.
