Things like this really inspire me. I always that after a certain age or point I will be a big failure that can't create my webtoon, "Keep it A Secret?". Maybe that's because I'll probably have less time in the future or something else, idk. When I see people over a certain age, say 25,30, making a webtoon, it makes me realise that you really only fail if you quit completely.

My method for short stories is to just make an elevator pitch in AIDA format. So when you can describe the story in 4 points or sentences, it shows you only the most important elements, so you can work around them. And the right way is to synthesize until you find the core premise, message, and heart of this story. And you just do the rest to present this element in the best way.

How long would you say a short comic would be, in pages?

I have been watching you’ns for a bit, obviously seeing that you have some good things to say, but approaching writing from a visual artist perspective is not simple to explain. What I, and possibly others (maybe without realizing it) are looking for is a series of exercises that get you to do the thing and therefore learn the process by stepping stupidly, as a learner, through the tasks. I’m finding a lot of better results in my visual art from treating it like an athlete would a sport. You can conceptualize what it takes to get a ball through a basketball goal, but nothing replaces moving yourself around the court, orienting to your target, acting and getting the immediate pass/fail feedback. I came across this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mNKVm7l6qd_ZiJ8.html in which an instructor does the writing equivalent of this. There is a twinge of cringe to it, but try to steep in it. Since just following the steps I’ve managed to get myself to write three (VERY) little stories in the last week. Normally I can get a little concept on a page once a month and it’s an incomplete thought that I feel daunted by. I would love to see both of you taking what you know and lay it out as an exercise, rather than a conceptual framework. That’s a big ask. But I think you have a genuine desire to teach this skill to others, while I can also since a touch of frustration that maybe no one understands it. At the least, this video helped me out in accomplishing a short story, so I thought I would share it here.

Mary is an amazing teacher. I’ve had the pleasure of attending her short story intensive, which I highly recommend. Anything by the Writing Excuses crew is amazing. I’m still recovering health wise. I don’t think I’ll personally have the energy to put together any lessons and exercises anytime soon.
