I learned something new today! Didn’t know grapes were wind pollinated. Thanks for another great video. ❤

Thanks so much for the advice about bees and wasps! We had just planted a grape vine at the enterance to our young kids play area. It was going to be a grape arbor over the enterance and a living wall around their play area. We are going to move it to another part of our yard now.

I don't want to go "that's so American", but I do think I see a pattern where more European sources say things like "this plant attracts lots of bees, so it is really nice if you want to show your children" and only ever sources from the US that say "a disadvantage of this plant is that it attracts a lot of pollinators so keep it away from children and pets". The pet part surprises me even more. I think it's much safer for children to be around bees and wasps regularly so they learn to stay calm and appreciate them. Just my personal opinion. Of course wasps in the house is inconvenient for both human and wasp :).

@@sjoerdmhh My parents had grapes and kiwis close to the front door 30 years ago and can't remember anyone complaining about bees and wasps.

yellow jackets are a real problem in September, right as grapes are ripening. I'm 0% concerned about bees, but don't want them in the house (poor girls, trapped away from the colony!), and I definitely don't want to run a gauntlet of starving yellow jackets every time I leave the house in Sept. Hence my recommendation to not put grapes right outside the door :)

@@ParkrosePermaculture Of course, an option I hadn't considered: that you might have some more agressive hymenoptera than we do here! :) Makes sense to be a bit more careful in that case.

yes, yellow jackets are SUCH a problem in Aug- Sept because they get very aggressive at the end of the season. I personally haven't had many issues with YS bc we make sure to protect any paper wasp colonies in our sheds or under the eaves of the house, as paper wasps are pretty darn docile and their presence deters YJs from taking up residence :)

What great information. My grapes are definitely suffering from incomplete pollination, and I didn’t realize they are wind pollinated. I suspected that I needed to do more pruning and now this gives me better idea of what to shoot for. Thanks!

I’d love to find some grape varieties I can try before I buy. Is that a thing? Blueberries abs plums too. I can be picky, so I’d hate to waste time growing a variety that disappoints my palette. Those grapes look amazing Angela! So gorgeous.

I get a few of the poorly pollinated hands because my grapes are on my back porch, next to my bay tree. I make sure to give those to the poultry because they will eat the tiny green ones too.

Having uneven ripening and fruit fall. Not adept at that snap thing... groundhog is fed now. Hummingbirds seen among leaves not sure if bugs or split grapes. Concords are unevenly ripening, the bindweed hid a lot. Watching video stimulated me to bring some in and eat these sweet seedy grapes. not sure will get juiced today. first year have decent show of grapes. Thanks Angela

Rookie question can you make wine with all those extra grapes? Looks delish “straight” 😊
@charlesdevier8203
@charlesdevier8203 11 ай бұрын
Of-course you can make wine with the grapes. Grapes are the only true "wine fruit" and comes with it's own yeast; which is the whitish powder on the skin of each grape. I have 5 gallons of Concord grape wine brewing from this summer's harvest and 5 gallons from last year. The wine needs to age for at least 2 years before it is good to drink.

So bummed. Here I thought I had a brilliant idea of trellising my grapes over our back deck for shade right off the back door. Now I'm really doubting, don't want wasps swarming us

Thank you for this one! Having your grapes trellis up your plum tree, would the grape vines possibly choke out the plum?

I haven't had it be a problem yet, but I do prune back my grapes heavily in autumn. What CAN be a pain is when the grapes are ripe and I am trying to pick them without knocking off maturing plum. If I had to do it over again, I would have used a variety of plum that is ripe WAY before the grapes, so I could pick grapes more easily.

Your grapes look amazing! Do you ever have a problem with fungi? Im also in 8b (in Australia) and am really struggling with fungi on my grapes. They have good air circulation but for some reason i just can't seem to go a season without fungi which really impacts fruit set. I'd love to hear any thoughts you might have.
@ParkrosePermaculture
@ParkrosePermaculture 11 ай бұрын
I think the climate here is just right, such that I don't really have fungal issues. It's very dry in August and the first 2-3 weeks of September, right when grapes are ripening. if the rains return early, we can get fungal problems. I admit to not keeping my grapes pruned as well as I should during the growing season and I know that poor air circulation increases risks of mildew
