Greatest tip I can give young people: do everything you possibly can at community college and then transfer to a 4-year university later. I am an old (I'm Gen X) and I came back to school to become a nurse at 41 but originally went to college at 18 as a pre-med. The first time through, I'd had all the AP classes in high school and got to transfer those in and that saved money but not a ton because I was going to private schools. When I went back at 41, I'd all but paid off that student loan debt from the first time around and had no interest in getting into any more debt so I did community college, which I could pay out of pocket for. Our local community college had an articulation agreement with major universities in the area and there was a course guide on the website to let me know which classes to take. I only have to pony up $12K at the to the 4-year school now (to go from ADN to BSN) instead of walking out of school with like $60K of debt the way I did in 2000. Many hospitals in the area offer 100% tuition reimbursement so I'm hoping to get a job with one of those so even the $12K won't be an issue. Highly recommend this and wish I'd know this was an option back in 1996.

I'm going into college very soon and something I wish I knew when I was in college is, well that I wish I wanted to be a nurse! I knew that I wanted to do something with taking care of people but I was unable to narrow my options. I'm glad however that I took some classes that would help me in college (physiology, chemistry, stats, etc.). Thank you for this video. I will definitely go search for volunteer jobs or whatever jobs that will highlight the characteristics my college's nursing program is looking for. I wish everyone who is on their career path to being a nurse a virtual fist bump and you can do this!

This video calmed my nerves a lot! I am a senior in high school and had the opportunity to shadow nurses in the ER, Radiology, heart catch lab, and travel nurses because I work for a hospital system in my area as a camp counselor (that qualified my for shadow hours). I just binged 15 of your videos lol. Can you do a video on job saturation in pharmacy? Thanks!

Hospice companies that bill to Medicare requires 5% of their hours be volunteer. I volunteer as a companion (but they also have office duties). I mostly just talk and work on my therapeutic communication skills.

Wow what amazing timing for this video topic! Also quick suggestion for future videos. Can you talk about the many different kinds of specialties in nursing as well as outpatient vs inpatient care? Unless you’ve already made videos on those subjects already.

My nursing school didn’t require much in terms of prerequisites ( ADN ), or an essay. We had the TEAS test for admission (some use Kaplan), and the minimum GPA was 2.5. Now I will say, you must have a squeaky clean background, or be willing to pay up to get it expunged. Our school would not admit you if you had your drivers license suspended, a DUI, drug charges, felonies or misdemeanors that weren’t traffic tickets. The state board of nursing wouldn’t license anyone with those charges. I was surprised how many people still tried though.

Hi Nurse Liz, I'm a junior and one of my guidance counselors at my school told me about a vocational program they do where they basically put you on a school bus and ship over to a larger neighboring school that is more equipt to teach specialty jobs like welding, cosmetology, nursing ect. and I am really considering doing it, I spoke with the teacher that teaches their med tech. program and he is a nurse and says that this program is great to set me on track to go into nursing school, so basically at the end of my junior year if I pass the course and then pass the state-mandated test I would become a stna, and then senior year, again assuming you pass both the course it's self and the test you become a state-certified phlebotomist. My family supports the idea and says it's a great opportunity, which it is, but I've been at the same school since kindergarten and I don't want to leave my friends but being a nurse is my dream job, what is your advice?
@NurseLiz
@NurseLiz 3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like an awesome program! It sounds like that program would definitely get you a huge leg up into getting into a nursing program, but at the cost of your friends. I think mental health and social wellness is super important, but if you place a higher value on having more of a "shoe in" for nursing school then I'd go with the new school. That being said, you can always apply after attending your own school and keeping your current social sphere. No wrong answer here! And its OK if your priorities are to maintain your social circle.

hi!! I know this was 2 years ago but im 14 years old about to go to hs and im SET on er nuring!! I was just wondering, my hs gives a career readiness classes. They are classes you can take to prepare you for nursing, art, engineering etc. like learning the basics. My school has a career pathway called "Health Services" its just an elective you can take where you learn about nursing and also practice, there's 4 levels, but junior year has 2 classes. Also, if you finish the first year (freshmab) you get certified by red cross and if you finish all 4 years you get an graduation cord at graduation. I signed up for that but should i still take biology, chemistry, physics, algebra?? Also they have clubs that are bith extra curricular or just curricular and they are volunteering clubs. Should i take those too??

My significant other, a Medical Doctor , suggests otherwise. Cost to becoming a physician is $250k-$500k. Nursing school is a fraction of the cost and malpractice insurance cheaper.
