I think this advise applies to everybody, not just us old guys (I'm a 49.5 year old brown belt). I say it all the time, if you want to get better at attacking, train with people who are lower level than you. When you want to work on defense, train with guys who are better than you. But, the key to training longevity in my opinion, is building relationship with training partners you can trust. You want to be able to try things, and work on escaping bad positions or even dangerous submissions, without risk of them breaking your knee or whatever they are attacking.

You can't really do that when you just start, tho

Exactly. If you're in your 50s and a white belt, you will find it hard even against the younger, stronger, and bigger guys who are less experienced than you. I rarely find people who are worse than me.

Higher belts should be feeding you when you are just starting out.

@tjl4688 😆 I've met very few high belts who do that. Most just want to use you as a grappling dummy. It's one of the reasons so many quit early or get injured. Also teaching techniques over concepts is another issue. This is one of the reasons why it takes so long to get a black belt. Unless you're spending a ton of time on the mat and getting excellent instruction, most jiu jitsu white belts will struggle big time.

That’s an interesting statement about the offensive game. I’m 55, and I’ve been training for nine months. I focus on survival during most of my rolls, the only time I get to play offense or apply an opening strategy is when I’m paired up with another white belt.

Right there with you, brother. First 9 months I was in, it was a mixed beginner/advanced class, so I got really used to rolling with blue, brown and black belts, so survival has been the name of the game. Offensively, it's only been maybe the last 3 months where things have started clicking and making sense.

I’m 49 and have trained for the last 11 years. I currently train at a very competitive Renzo Gracie gym. I try to learn the new leg locks and other stuff that the young competitors utilize, but I typically end up in half-guard bottom, looking for sweeps, back takes, or other “easy” submissions. I would love to do more, but sustainability is most important to me.

As a 57 year old mediocre brown belt who has not followed this rule at all, I can attest that what he said is true. Most of my training has been with people better than me my entire time in Jiu Jitsu. I basically rolled 70% or 80% of the time with people far beyond my skill level. My defense game is pretty well developed as a mid brown belt, but my attack game is trash. I'm now playing catch-up trying to develop that attack game. Wish somebody had told me this rule back when I started like eight years ago. Great advice! Don't be a mid brown belt like me!

I'm going on 54, haven't trained in 15 years before starting again. My injuries of the past haunt me now days, especially my lower back injury in a Navy plane crash in 2003. I'm big guy and used to be able to smash a bit but now days, I need to work more defense to survive. If I an roll and defend against a guy twenty years younger, stronger, better cardio, then it is somewhat of a victory for me. I have to know when to rest my back, my heart, as well. My brain says yes but my body says, fuck you, not today.

It's interesting that he has a lot of videos about how to avoid getting injured. Are injuries a common problem in BJJ? It might be good for him to make a video addressing the degree of risk in BJJ, and when and how injury becomes a higher risk.

my question is, when you are a beginner (older than 50) how is anyone going to apply the 70/30 rule when they are already at the bottom. who are you going to roll with that you are better than? maybe in a year or two, but pretty tough to find someone that I am better than as a raw beginner. (i am 63 and just starting)

Roll with smaller/weaker athletes with similar skills and women as well. Also it doesn't take much time training to get an edge over a totally untrained individual so in a short time you'll be able to pick out the new ones coming in.

100% - about to turn 57, 3 stripe purple, 70% roll with lower than your rank, 30% roll with your rank or higher. Of course, depends who shows up, who pairs up with whom, some nights will be the opposite, but definitely something to shoot for and keep in the back of your mind…allows you to get reps in against full resistance for whatever you’re working on.

I think, "Don't write checks your body can't cash," is better advice. Most training partners will match your energy. Start the roll at 60-70% intensity. Work technique instead of trying to "win." You'll still get smashed, but, hopefully, not hurt.

The 70 30 thing is stupid because as a newbie who the fuck are you going to be beat at jiu jitsu?😂
