I don't consider myself to be an expert in Cantonese and all the advice is purely my own opinions based on my own experience learning the language. I know that my Cantonese is far from perfect and I probably made a good few mistakes, so if you spot any bad ones I'd appreciate you letting me know :)

Really appreciate your effort, Alex! Your video reminded me of my experience of being an exchange student in the UK...I just put myself out there and talk to a lot of people. At the beginning, I was super worried about speaking with an accent, but Iater I realized people don't really care that much:)

Hi Alex, Cannot believe your Cantonese is that great. My Cantonese is not as good as you even though I am myself half Vietnamese-Cantonese, my Dad is Cantonese. Hope to get feedback from you and talk to you more. Thanks and have a nice day!

Tashy Avalon I watched a lot of HK youtubers and noted down words that were new to me, looked them up and then (tried) to memorise them. The trick is to use the new piece of vocab as quick and as many times as you can for it to stick in your head :P

Hello Alex ! I'm from Hong Kong and I think your Cantonese is great! I'm teaching my Cornish fiancé Cantonese and I don't know where to progress. I can see that you can express yourself in Cantonese really well. How do you do that? Do you start with sentence structure first or vocabularies first? Does reading children books help?
@AlexHarris1094
@AlexHarris1094 7 жыл бұрын
Stefania Hafwen I only studied sentence structure and memorised vocabulary, I didn't start learning characters until very recently :) I personally wouldn't recommend bothering with characters in the beginning

我也學廣東話啦!我已經會講國語因此我希望學廣東話會容易一點!你的廣東話特別好。I look forward to your next video, hope you can upload more frequently. I have one question, is there any way to type Cantonese on iPhone? I've been using handwriting and pinyin, but it'd be great to type directly in Yale. Thanks for the videos!
@AlexHarris1094
@AlexHarris1094 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think most learners of Cantonese learned Mandarin first. I'm doing it the other way around, currently trying to learn Mandarin now. I would like to upload videos more frequently but I'm currently studying my last year of University and it's very busy so I'll have to see.. In regards to typing Cantonese on your phone using Yale, I'm assuming you are an Iphone user like me which, for whatever reason, doesn't have the capability to type using Yale. From what I've heard some other phones do, I think maybe Samsungs do. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way around it on the Iphone :/ I use Pinyin and type Mandarin

I understand that in Cantonese you write with the same characters that are used for mandarin as well, but I don't understand what it means when people say that you don't speak it the same as you write it. Could someone please explain that to me
@ryannemo1124
@ryannemo1124 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, Cantonese can be written in the way that you speak it. People say the writing and speaking system are different because they thought Cantonese doesn't have a written system but write in a system that is based on Mandarin's grammar. While in Hong Kong, the case is that on extremely formal occasions and official education, standard Chinese (in Mandarin grammar) is used but in social media, the internet, advertising, and other daily situations, written Cantonese (in Cantonese grammar, you write it in the way you speak) is used.
@ryannemo1124
@ryannemo1124 7 жыл бұрын
but the standard Chinese, though it's in Mandarin grammar, we still pronounced it in Cantonese.
@devonmercurio354

I suppose I'm one of the people who would "disagree" with your advice not to attempt to learn written Chinese as a beginner to Cantonese. (Although, I didn't even think of learning Cantonese until I had already studied Japanese and formed my own opinions about honjih; can I ask, have you begun to study written Chinese yet? There's obviously no shortage of Chinese-language materials available to anyone with internet access, but as far as I can tell Cantonese speakers in Hong Kong (and everywhere else) don't seem to be literate in "written Cantonese" anyway; if a person can speak and read Chinese, whatever they can speak, they read and write "standard Chinese" (~"mandarin", 中文 but perhaps not 漢語,華語,廣東/廣州話,普通話 etc.)
