Hey, I've been working with Cantonese people for almost 7 years and I still don't understand completely, I've been trying to self teach for a while and it has become easier to communicate, I can understand most conversations but always get lost on little words, but I want to be fluent, your videos help a lot and hope there's more to come man!

I have some difficulties in learning Cantonese. The most confusing one to me is its tones. Can you share with me how you distinguish 6 tones in Cantonese. I understand that in Cantonese you write with the same characters that are used for mandarin as well, but I don't understand what it means when people say that you don't speak it the same as you write it. Could someone please explain that to me

I suppose I'm one of the people who would "disagree" with your advice not to attempt to learn written Chinese as a beginner to Cantonese. (Although, I didn't even think of learning Cantonese until I had already studied Japanese and formed my own opinions about honjih; can I ask, have you begun to study written Chinese yet? There's obviously no shortage of Chinese-language materials available to anyone with internet access, but as far as I can tell Cantonese speakers in Hong Kong (and everywhere else) don't seem to be literate in "written Cantonese" anyway; if a person can speak and read Chinese, whatever they can speak, they read and write "standard Chinese" (~"mandarin", 中文 but perhaps not 漢語，華語，廣東／廣州話，普通話 etc.)
