I started crocheting about 3.5 years ago. I fell in love with alpaca, and I use alpaca blends in sweaters.

Plus with blocking the fibers grip each other & in a way that’s memory. Since it’s not superwashed it has the scales to block really well, Have also made 100% alpaca socks & never had a problem with them either but I also knit them with 1.2 mm needles & tend to knit tight stitches, though I do have pairs that are color work socks made with 1.5 mm needles but never had an issue with them stretching out.

Hi from New Zealand, I really enjoy what you share and look forward to watching all your episodes. I first learnt to spin about 20 years ago and my obsession was Alpaca, don't know why really, just was. Anyway I was never told that I could NOT spin and knit 100% Alpaca to make a jersey or cardigan, so I did. My first Jersey was a beautiful cream colour with amazing crimp that always stayed the shape it was knitted into. It didn't grow. I need to add that I was NOT an expert in spinning, nor am I now, but my first ever attempt at pure alpaca was what I wanted and expected. I had that jersey many years, so I naturally thought that everyone did this with alpaca. Have any of your other viewers experienced 100% alpaca jersey making with satisfactory results? Please do not think I am contradicting what you share, that is not my intention.

Hi Celeste, the crimp is the key. Sounds like your alpaca had lots of crimp. Naturally, the crimp would cause the fibers to “bounce back”. However, that is not typical for alpaca. With the wide range of waves to crimp that exists for alpaca, it is better to expect that it will not keep its shape. The only guarantee is when you observed it yourself, like you did as a spinner. When buying commercial alpaca yarn, you have no idea what the crimp level is. In most cases, you will be greatly disappointed if you expect 100% alpaca to keep its shape. I have another video on understanding alpaca fiber that goes more into detail on this.

LOL- I'm 12 rows in an a cabled hat using 100% baby alpaca yarn - so I'm definitely frogging it tonight. I'm so glad I found this video first- great info on this kind of yarn. Incidently, I made a cabled hat out of very well known wool/acrylic blend and sadly it's stretched out despite hand washes only. I'm trying to get away from acrylics but they keep pulling me in 😜

This is very helpful since I am about to embark on spinning for a sweater. My plan is to blend my alpaca fleece 75% with 25% Finn. What do you think of a Finn blend, and this percentage? This Finn has lovely crimp, but I haven't seen seen Finn used with Alpaca anywhere. Thank you for your podcast. I just found you and hope you are still around. I have a few Alpaca fleeces and will be using your information for a while.

This sounds like a good blend. I made a handspun Finn sweater and it has some pulling but has worn beautifully over the years, and is soft. I went with 3-ply.

Thank you for this valuable information! You just saved me a lot of grief. But now I have a question. What is likely to happen if I make a wool sweater with alpaca collar and cuffs? I imagine that would provide structure where needed, and softness where needed, but wonder what would happen at the seam.

for the information, but now I have a question. I purchased an alpaca blend yarn 70% Baby alpaca, 20% silk 10% cashmere to make a sweater. The pattern I was going to do has a 3" ease. I was going to make a swatch and wash it and do a hang dry technique to see how much it would grow so to speak. Then adjust what size to make or would it be best to carry a stabilizing thread rayon/poly blend while knitting the sweater? Thanks in advance for your guidance on this.
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 2 жыл бұрын
Cashmere will provide the elasticity. I tend to stay away from using a rayon/poly blend thread because it will cut the yarn over time creating pilling.

These are so informational. Thanks! I have a question. If you have an alpaca blend yarn and we assume all of the alpaca has no crimping, what % of wool could we call a safe number to have enough memory from wool to make sweaters? I.e., is 10% wool enough? 25%?
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 2 жыл бұрын
I would say 20-30% wool to be safe.

Do you also raise merino sheep? Or do you buy the merino wool and nylon to already mixed with your alpaca wool. When you get the final product, the wool skeins, it must be pretty expensive for you too.

I don’t have merino sheep. I would buy it from the mill as part of my processing order. The final bill can be high but, hopefully, I’ve made a good choice in designing my yarn so it sells well.

Hi someone gave me a lot of raw alpaca I have cleaned and picked it, but I’m not sure how much I should blend it. 60/40 and do I weigh the alpaca or just eye it.
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 5 жыл бұрын
How much wool you blend with alpaca depends on the final project. My personal preference for general blending is 70/30, but there is no wrong answer here. You should weigh it out because alpaca is lighter than wool.

Block it so that it looks nice/even and opens up the areas you want, like for lace, but don’t overstretch it. Keep in mind that it will relax over time.

So I guess the trick to making a long-sleeved dress, is to make a short-sleeved sweater with narrow shoulders. :) Funny, but more than a joke, would that be a possibility? ~ Why is Nylon an important player in socks? In the spirit of thoroughness, you might have told us, since it's inevitable that someone would ask, :) and generally, you can count on me for detailed questions. :) Thanks!

I guess this means that Alpaca Felt can't maintain any more structure than the yarn, and thus couldn't be used to make a structured Felt hat, unless we blended it with other fibers. ~ I have this hope of making a blouse out of Suri fiber, using some creative method. Could it be woven and cut into fabric, rather than knitted or crocheted? Knitting and crocheting naturally produces tremendous give and stretch in fibers, while weaving supplies structure. (You are too young to remember woven cotton bras that had no give except for the elastic. Yuk.) While I know how to knit, pearl and crochet, the weaving question remains. If one made (in any manner) a short poncho, even with no memory, could it be used to result in a longer, bigger poncho? Thank you for answering my Curious George questions. :) I appreciate it, and your cheerful, pleasant demeanor.

If you want an alpaca dress, use alpaca yarn with something like wool or acrylic. Then make it so you know it fits. 100% alpaca dress would be awful hot anyway. As for the nylon, sock knitters are very familiar with it as it's in A LOT of sock yarn on the market. Nylon makes it so the yarn does not wear out as quickly in high abrasion spots, like the heal. I didn't explain what nylon is because those who are most likely to knit alpaca socks already know about it. The hand knit sock craze is pretty intense. LOL
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 6 жыл бұрын
Felted fabric and yarn are quite different. Felting happens when the scales on the surface of the fibers have gotten all caught up on one another, therefore, providing structure. However, the fibers in yarn are laying next to each other and twisted so they don't come apart. Yarn has give, but felt does not. I do not weave so can't offer advice on how the fabric behaves compared to knitting or crochet. Sorry.
@cacatr4495

Butterfield Alpacas & Fiber Arts So could Alpaca Felt be used to make a winter hat, just as Wool has in the past? That would be an interesting question. I don't know your age, but a fair distance before your era, the only knit items were socks, T-shirts, underwear, and sweaters, shawls. All other garments were woven, having no stretch or give at all, they were binding and uncomfortable, very structured. It's in the very nature of knit to drape and give, magnified by far with a fiber that has no memory. I would imagine that woven Alpaca fiber would still drape and give, but not as much as when knit. I've grown up around textiles and learning that different stitches and handling lend themselves to different results. It's just the nature of fibers, just as different knots do different things. :). I should have remembered about Nylon supplying endurance to abrasion areas, though Nylon only entered in when synthetics did. That's why I forgot. ~ I'm sure enjoying learning from your channel, and your family of creatures are delightful to see and learn about. Thank you for sharing!
