Sometimes I feel discouraged that people aren't interested in our family history. it is so true how much of an obsession it is, for me at least. I appreciate this today, because i can see now that a bunch of random facts may not be interesting to people who don't share my obsession, but everyone enjoys stories. It's why we watch tv, or go to the movies, or read books. Stories help us to connect to others.

Really excellent presentation. It suddenly seems very possible to start telling the stories. Thank you!

Awesome advice to write down the stories as you find them. It's difficult to remember, after a while, which relative did the fun stuff or went through trying times; often there will be several relatives that fit this picture, based on their placement within historical events, such as the Great Depression, the Holocaust, World Wars, or even the Dust Bowl.

Great video and advice. My Dad is a great story teller and told so many family stories I wish I had captured. I have recently started probing him for some of these stories and have recorded them or immediately, on getting home, wrote them down. So I agree start writing now. I know I will never hear all the stories he has told again and I may not have remembered them correctly from the past.

I keep running Word documents with screenshots of search results, notes where my search has taken me, things to do next. Gets a bit messy though - your method is neat and all in one place! Great tips Crista

Interesting video - some really good tips. I find that I get really overwhelmed with all of the things that I "could do." Write here, write there, notes here and there, etc. With my family histories dating back to before the American Revolution, there is no way that I can capture everything. Don't be afraid to walk away - take a break now and then from your research. "Fresh eyes" often pick up missed details. Good video. I'm glad that I found it.

I agree that there are more to people than birth, death, census, etc. records and this can get rather boring. My family is no exception in their lack of interest much less enthusiasm as I talk about what records I've compiled so far. I would like to see more examples or ideas of how others put their stories together. I love Crista's suggestion "Don't wait". I'm going to start now.

I spent my early yrs trying to fill in every name on every branch. Then, 10 yrs ago I realized that an entire generation of my family, The Greatest Generation, was gone, and realized the value of stories behind names. Like Harold below, I agree stories really do allow us to truly know our ancestors. Newspaper archives have been a great source for me. I'm lucky to have most of my family long-rooted in Baltimore - w several long-running papers. Tougher in the country, but I'll keep digging!

This is really a great video, Christa. Family history (and history in general) isn't about names and dates... it's about people. Every person in history has fascinating stories about them - and it's the stories that allow us to know who our ancestors really were. I'm glad to see you emphasizing this!
