outside corner joints are one of the most commonly used weld joints in fabrication of tanks, reservoirs, battery boxes, etc.
The outside corner joint is also one of the easiest weld joints to do.
Here are some tips, settings, and arc shots to help your chances of making a good weld on an outside corner joint.
I used a #8 furick clear cup on some of these welds to help with the filming process and because it really helps me see the weld joint by kind of lighting the way for me like a flood light bulb.

at 1:39 the heat affected zone has grown wider up until 3/4 way through the weld but the underside penetration looks like it has decreased at about 1/2 way through the weld. should a welder use less amps (back off the pedal) and move slower at the halfway point to keep the penetration that is displayed towards the first half of the weld and carry it to the end? i guess what im asking is what sort of manipulation is needed to maintain the same penetration throughout the length of the weld and keeping the heat affected zone a consistent width. not a welder here. just self taught from youtube videos like yours and the weldmonger store has helped. just trying to get a 'feel' for whats happening. thanks for everything you have already done for all of us weekend warriors.

Would you please draw an outline of your electrode inside of a lit arc? I am learning to tig weld and watching your videos has helped greatly but visualizing where the actual tip of your electrode is has eluded me. Through your 3things that go wrong with Tig Welding video I know my arc length (which you talk about again toward the end of this video) is a majority of my problem.

I have a question that isn’t directly related to this video, but it’s of concern to me. I just got a refill for my argon tank, and my welds using my mig torch (stainless welds) are now blue/grey. I haven’t had this before. I didn’t get a chance to try to change my torch out for TIG. But I’m wondering if you’ve ever had a tank refilled with the wrong gas? I can’t find any leaks anywhere, and I hear the gas coming out of my torch when I press the button. This is just too weird.

I've got a question. How would you do a weld if you need a complete flush flat surface, let's say the material is 3mm thick tube? I'm tempted to not use filler, it's for a furniture thing so looks really matter and structural strength is not really important.
@benc8386
@benc8386 6 жыл бұрын
Joss docker Just make sure the weld stands up a bit (which it usually does anyway) and then grind it flat with a flap wheel. Can do the first part with the stone if necessary. If you watch Jimbo's Garage he does this on all his projects.

I would think about a small chamfer and small filler wire. no filler wire welds on carbon steel often get some porosity. the added deoxidizers in the filler really do help

Hey Jody, I need your advice please, I am on the job right now grinding my tungsten with a sanding wheel and no face protection, I i think I felt a piece of it hit my face, maybe it bounced off. my old tig instructor says If it punctures the skin and enters your bloodstream it could be poisonous. Am I in danger? Will I know right away?
@danielhocking5922
@danielhocking5922 6 жыл бұрын
Would only be a problem if the tungsten is radioactive, I grind tungsten without face protection (Safety Glasses though) I've been hit with pieces of grinding rock or sanding discs, might just be that.
@thatgoodnutt6764
@thatgoodnutt6764 6 жыл бұрын
Thoriated tungstens are slightly radioactive, but the radiation is so slight that unless you get an unreasonably large amount of it in your bloodstream you will be fine.
