In this video, I talk about 10 tips for when you move to Amsterdam. It’s been about 3 months since I moved to Amsterdam, and settling in here has been far from normal given Covid-19. It got me thinking, what if I could ask people already living here for a while - ‘What do they wish they’d done in their first 12 months of arriving in Amsterdam?’ So I did exactly that - I asked friends and people on Facebook for their advice. Honestly I was quite surprised with the responses I got! So staying on the positive side of things, I’ve whittled this down to 10 tips for when you move to Amsterdam.

Hi everyone! Is there anything else you wish you'd done in your first 12 months in Amsterdam?

Regarding the bikes, I've had both really old simple bikes, now own a real proper, 'good quality' bike and have had several of 'in between' quality. In my experience, both the old simple bikes and the proper, good quality bike are great choices; the in-between ones not so much. An old, simple bike is not particularly comfortable or fast, but it will be super reliable, durable and requires virtually zero care and little maintenance. A proper, high-quality bike will require a bit more care and will be more expensive, but you can find high-quality bikes that are very durable and don't require much maintenance either, and they are much faster and more comfortable. The in-between bikes, well, in my experience they have more bells and whistles that give them a bit more comfort and speed, like the high-quality bikes, but the parts are lower quality and as a result they are much less durable than the simple or high-quality bikes. The city and it's traffic are unforgiving to bikes; the wear on bikes in Amsterdam is much greater than in smaller towns because of the limited availability of protected parking and generally people treating (your) parked bike with little regard. It's the in-between bikes, with their lower quality bells and whistles that suffer the most. This is just personal experience, maybe somebody else has a different opinion.

Thank you for your in depth comment on this topic. I find that very interesting and haven't heard this point raised before. I will definitely keep it in mind when I'm considering my next bike. :)

These are some good tips, especially if you're planning to stay in Amsterdam/Netherlands long-term! Even though everyone speaks great English, it can still feel a bit awkward and there's so much room for misunderstanding. People always look much happier when I say a few words in Dutch, even if it's just thank you or hello!

Thanks for the lovely feedback on this video! I agree it's a really good thing to be able to say even just a 'thank you' or 'hello.' Shows willing to learn the language :)

Talking about the weather is not t h e way to start a conversation with a stranger, but * a * way. However, it should sound spontaneous.

Fair enough! Still haven't done it yet though :)

@@pocketlighthouse What are you waiting for? To make no language mistakes at all anymore? That will never happen, because it's impossible, so I'd say, don't worry and be spontaneous!

Nr.9A: go outside of Amsterdam! Visit The Hague, Rotterdam, Maastricht, Groningen, f.i. See the Delta-works, the Hoge Veluwe and its splendid museum, visit car free Schiermonnikoog etc. No, we are not offended if you call the Netherlands ‘Holland’, but what really pisses me off is if you consider living in Amsterdam equal to ‘knowing the Netherlands’. We’re small, but not that small.

Thank you for your comment. I'd like to respectfully point out that I have never said in ANY of my videos that I consider living in Amsterdam as knowing The Netherlands. I also know better than to call The Netherlands 'Holland.' In fact, I am extremely excited and looking forward to visiting other parts of The Netherlands once I'm fully vaccinated and it's safer to do more travelling. Thank you for your location suggestions - I'm already planning on visiting The Hague in the coming few weeks and there will be more trips elsewhere in the coming months.

@@pocketlighthouse I’m sorry for the unkind tone of my comment. That was quite unnecessary. Your video of course is meant not for me, but for a non-Dutch audience, thinking about visiting or moving here.
