In this video, Kim Bryant, UM's Assistant Director of Admissions, tells students what she likes to read in college admissions essays. She likes storytellers who are personable and talk from their hearts. Bryant talks about the importance of voice and what it takes to write a compelling college application essay. Hey, quick question on college admissions, suppose I got a 3.4 in my freshman year, but it consistently improved to a 3.8-3.9, would colleges look at the improvement or just the hard average? (I'm also taking all AP/IB courses persuing the IB diploma, founder and leader of DHS Science Cub, DHS Science Olympiad, DHS Chess Club, and member of National Honor Society, Spanish Club, FGL, and play for the DHS JV Tennis Team. Oh yeah, and I got top 75 in the world out of 10,000 in the Junior Breakthrough Competition (international).) Is this good enough to compensate for the horrible GPA? Please. I Am desperate.

That is not a horrible GPA. You are qualified, so apply. Remember, it's holistic. Grades and test scores are most important, and you improved greatly during your high school years. Founding clubs is great. But more important.... keep in mind.. what did you learn from it, how did any of it change you, who are you? They want to read the application and get a feel for who each applicant is. A list of accomplishments shows you have been successful. To improve your chances of standing out, show them who you are outside of the experiences you've had at school, in clubs. What characteristics define you? Share that.
