Some tips on growing Mangos (Mangifera Indica) in Mediterranean climates. Southern California is mango country, if you make some easy changes.

Who has ever had a mango and hated it? This doesn't exist lol. I doubt people growing mango from seed would EVER hate the fruit they get. great tips!!

Thanks. There are some pretty bad seed grown mango varieties out there. On the flip side, there are also some incredible seed grown mango varieties!

Very good points. I have seedlings, 3 years old, that have reached the 2 meters, and am letting them another 2 more years in the ground and after that will come the grafting. This way the tree grows a LOT faster. Btw, across the Med sea people grow mangos, except the north coasts like Croatia for example, so, of course mangos can grow in Mediterranean climate.

can you do some videos, i live in the IE and feel like it would be brutal for them out here because i have had bad luck with avocados.

Great video and I think it’s true, seed grown will be faster and better tree. I learned this for Tropical Fruit forum where a guy named Simon is as much of a mango nut as you are. I have 4 recently bought/planted seedling LaVerne ‘Manila’ in the ground to top work when mature. So far they are blasting past my grafted 5 year old tree.

I also recently bought a variety box of fresh mangoes from Florida and planted all those seeds. They are growing incredibly fast, especially super Julie. Several other sweet tart are also growing fast. I direct planted several seed in the ground and they are also doing well and I wonder if they will outpace the store bought ones?

I have one of Mallika, pickering, carrie mango tree. I don't remember which one but it is very sweet, it's a slow grower and I have had it since 2018. I live in Ontario Ca. Zone 10a

Bruv, you just hit me up with some knowledge. I've been growing a couple seedlings in containers (zone 9a). I guess I won't bother with trying to find budwood.

Thanks for the great video. We live in west Torrance. Beach is around 1 - 1.5 miles away from us. I am growing a mallika mango close to a wall. It’s around 5 yrs old. Grafted from a nursery. Trying to add different varieties to that. Will u be able to share a sweet tart cutting pls🙏

How do you get around the wet winter and spring so that the mango trees will set fruit?

Hi Aj, thanks for this detailed video. I live in CA in zone 9b and I bought a few grafted mango varieties to put in my backyard. I tried growing from seedling but I had no success. What should I do with my grafter trees? Should I take this risk of planting them in ground?

Depends on where you got your trees from and how cold it gets in your area.

do you know if there are varieties that are hardier and would survive without protection in the winter - zone 9A?

In your area they would need protection. I don’t know of any varieties that can take that much cold.

My manila mango seedling till this day is struggling to grow. It's been in ground for two years now from its original potting. In it's potting I think it wasn't rooting well so I planted it in ground 2 years ago with a "mango soil mix"... Still struggling. I think it's first year in ground, it got too much direct sun and so it still had very stunted growth. Im not going to kill it, just going to provide 40% shade cloth this spring/summer and see how it does. But at this point I'm not relying on it to grow "normal" anymore, and I'm just going to buy possibly a grafted Glenn and plant it close to this Manila and see how things grow. Any tips??

Make sure the pH is somewhere between 4.5 and 6. Trust me a lot of the problem with mango growers is that they don't keep an eye on the pH of the soil. Hit me back and give me an update okay, I'll walk you through this

I had a store bought mango that had a seed within it which was sprouting. I placed it in a jar with a bit of water and it kept sprouting and splitting wider open. I didn’t know how to plant it - I put it laterally in ground and it died. :( What did I do wrong? What kind of soil does a seed need? How deep? Which way?
