These coaches that are running these gyms are expecting you to be a volunteer coach and when they see the students you train achieving with ability they take them away from you and use your work against you.

How long should you be a volunteer coach before he starts paying you for your service

I don’t think that many boxers have the skills necessary to coach and train the skills of boxing. And vice versa some coaches don’t have the knowledge of boxing to coach or train it properly. I would say that coaches should know the sport, and this is sometimes a problem there are a lot of charlatans that don’t understand boxing as deeply. Also, in the community there are dogma a commitment to style or system that’s proven successful for their fighters, but isn’t useful for the student in front of them (everyone has different body types, different characteristics and traits which they excel or lack) this is normal for everyone from novice to professional. Likewise, the coaches themselves that train pugilists don’t know why or the idea behind what they are telling their students to do something, their is nothing worse than a lack of confidence in coach than thinking you have the skill to defend yourself or box and in fact don’t. I would research the material, where ideas around boxing techniques came from, the ideas behind the technique and ultimately the point for it’s use or it’s application. I would look at professional fighters and really analyze what’s happening in the ring, read literature on the skills of fighters and coaches that developed these ideas. Same applies for boxers with ring experience, really dig into the reason for why, and the point of certain movements/techniques. Learn your coaching style, learn the style that works for your students and impart that wisdom of pugilism. For those that want to do boxing as exercise and aren’t looking to fight for money, that’s totally fine but let me tell you that something happens when you really know how to defend yourself properly. And you’re already here wanting to learn boxing why not learn to defend yourself as well.
