I just raised a neckline a bit for someone through the shoulder seams area of a silk chiffon dress. I messed up thinking it was just a synthetic chiffon. I steamed the bodice with a fabric steamer and now I fear that I may have stretched the neckline a little. Is there a way to shrink it back somehow or will dry cleaning help? Or will I just have to take it in more? Should I have stay stitched or stabilized the neckline prior to starting the alteration? Any help would be appreciated.
@SheerStitchery
@SheerStitchery 3 жыл бұрын
@@noemir8262 oh, sorry I didn't see this right away. Hmmm... you should have stay stitched the neckline so it won't stretch out as you sew... being it is stretched out, I doubt you could get it to shrink back. How close to the original pattern is the piece? You may be able to recut the pattern piece to the right shape, as it is larger (being stretched out). Hope it went well!! 🥰

I just bought a chiffon dress for my daughter's wedding and I am hemming it. It is really important to use the scraps you cut off to practice. That's the best way to see what your machine is doing to the fabric so you know what adjustments to make. Thank you for this video!

I appreciate how well you explained and showed how to work with silk chiffon. I'm a beginner sewist and got a bit carried away with a clearance sale on silk chiffon. I'm planning to make some easy kimonos as gifts for my family. I was relieved to hear that a fine polyester thread will work as that is what I have and was concerned that it would be too bulky.

I researched and researched mask patterns, and then researched and researched fabric. I found studies that stated a 90% polyester/10% spandex chiffon provided a high filtration rate. I also found a pattern with nose and chin gussets that I was excited to try - looked well fitted with enough room to breathe. Having not sewn on a machine in some years, I blithely plunged into sewing the complicated chiffon fabric mask on a circa 1980s machine. After the fabric slipped and slid and the machine had chewed some up, I remembered the tissue paper trick. Things went a bit smoother after that, but I still toiled (the nose gusset was so darn hard to do!). Some seams are a little crooked and the gusset has a minor pucker, but it is the best mask for me. However, I swore I would never make another mask out of that silky chiffon. Because of the great fit, I used cotton with the same pattern, but the fit and feel is just not there. I found your video and am inspired to try the chiffon again, but first I will buy a walking foot. Thank you for such an articulate and thoroughly detailed presentation!

Yes, though I would place tissue paper underneath so that your stitching is nice and even and doesn’t get sucked into the feed dogs. (You can backstitch stay the start but at the point of the dart tie off the ends)

Thank you so much for this helpful info! Just wondering, what stitch tension (my Janome machine is 0-9) would you recommend, and also what stitch length? Again, my machine's length options go from 0-4 :)
@SheerStitchery
@SheerStitchery 4 жыл бұрын
Each machine is a bit different but I would do some test swatches to see what looks best starting at just below your "average" and work from there. I usually use a 2.5mm stitch length and usually don't have to touch my tension - but if you are getting puckers then lower the tension a bit

Hi I have found this tutorial so helpful making dresses in chiffon crepe and it has princess seams .the skirt of the dress is attached to a bodice and needs to be firmer than the flowing skirt. I have a matching cotton lining and wonder what the best method would be to firm the top to attach the straps to. E.G iron on interfacing onto the lining and sandwich the layers together . Or to possibly best contrast the the top without the chiffon . have purchased samples to practice on but would welcome any tips that may help. The dresses are for my granddaughters wedding next April so Im researching methods of using chiffon crepe. Many thanks . Susan
@SheerStitchery
@SheerStitchery 3 жыл бұрын
I would underline the fabric of the bodice. I have a video that shows you how to underline fabric here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8B2odqm3tald30.html the part you want to watch begins at 2:30 (or just watch the whole thing for fun if you want ;) That way you can have the chiffon as the outerlayer then use the cotton as your underlining (ensuring it is coordinating as the chiffon will show through) and then line with what you like. If you have any questions let me know!

A tips when using paper as a stabiliser while sewing the fabric, be careful when trying to pull the paper off, so you don’t tear the fabric apart. A good idea is to try the method on a piece of scrap fabric before.

How do you do the rolled hem by hand that you mentioned at the end of this video ? Do you have a video demonstrating this technique? Thanks for this video:)

Hi Mary, I don't have a video for that just yet, but I have bought a bunch of chiffon to make a vintage 1960s PJ set from some vintage patterns and I could demonstrate that in that video. Just have to wait for the fabric to arrive... haha!

Hi I'm making a princess seamed bodice which is chiffon crepe overlaid on with matching polyester cotton plus a lining of polyester cotton. Princess seams would be OK on the back lining but would overlocked be ok on the chiffon overlaid fabric . Any ideas welcome thanks .

I would not overlock the chiffon outer piece, you would see it. I would do a very narrow french seam on the chiffon. Good luck and do tell me how it comes out :)

Hello, I was wondering if you could explain about the hemming by hand you mentioned for the sheer fabric/chiffon. You mentioned the effect is much better but are the ends likely to fray or do you overlock? Thanks Ruw
@SheerStitchery
@SheerStitchery Жыл бұрын
The ends won’t fray as they are turned under in the rolled hem. I’ll have to film a video tutorial on how to do it! I’ve added it to my list 👍

What would you recommend to use for an organza veil edges to create a free edge look?
@SheerStitchery
@SheerStitchery 2 жыл бұрын
Organza doesn't fray so you can just leave the edge without any hem. If you wanted a hem or a decorative purpose, I would do a narrow rolled hem (but personally, i like the look of an unhemmed organza)

At what temperature should you iron both natural and polyester silk chiffon? High temp, low temp, or medium temp?
@SheerStitchery
@SheerStitchery 8 ай бұрын
Natural silk can take higher temperatures, while a polyester or synthetic blend cannot and I would use a moderate heat on those. I would start out lower and see what your particular fabric can take heat-wise.

Can I ask how you cut a long amount of chiffon like for a scarf. I’ve had difficulty doing this and especially as it doesn’t all fit on my table at the same time? Thanks.
@SheerStitchery
@SheerStitchery 2 жыл бұрын
I would buy some poster board from the dollar store and cut it to 6.5” wide (or the width of my long narrow quilting ruler) or ask for a en empty bolt from the fabric shop that is for the 60” width and not quilting cotton 42” width fabrics. Then I would carefully lay the chiffon in a single layer and begin rolling it onto the poster board bolt. Once it is all on the bolt, fold out and cut the chiffon (I would use a rotary cutter and mat and for a scarf I would use my quilting ruler as it is a perfect rectangle) as much as fits on your cutting table. Leave the rest folded up on the bolt. Once that piece is cut, shift the fabric back and unfold the remainder of the scarf from the bolt. Hope this helps!

At the end of your video, you suggest that you roll the fabric by hand. I am confused by this statement. Does roiled by hand mean to not use a sewing machine?

@@SheerStitchery Are you saying that the hem is totally done by hand - that you roll it over once and hand stitch it, press it, and then roll it again and hand stitch? Or do you stitch it on the machine, press it, cut it to 1/8" from the stitching, roll it, press it, and then hand stitch? Or do you roll it over twice and stitch it once and then press it? lol I've really complicated this, haven't I?

Hello. I purchased a blouse that is chiffon with lace cutouts around the shoulders. I can send you a photo. My problem is that I am trying to get the cutout and chiffon to lay as flat as possible so that it doesn't bulk up. Any suggestions?
