In this Cubase tutorial, Greg Ondo shares his advice on recording with effects or monitoring with effects but recording your signal dry as part of your Cubase workflow. Using the VST bass amp effect plugin as an example, he highlights how turning off direct monitoring for the built-in DSP on the Steinberg AXR interface and other similar I/O units lets you monitor the Cubase DAW software effects. He also looks at embedding effects into your recording and monitoring the wet channel while recording both wet and dry tracks as part of your Cubase music production. Hi, great video. Ive one question: i see when you playback automatictly the monitor option from the track is bypassed. I cant find that option.

Hi Greg, I'm exactly in the same situation: recording my bass while hearing the effects. When I disable the direct monitoring, I have a very audible latency (almost 1/2 second). Total latency on the mono input track is 3.0 ms (coming from VST Bass Amp) and my audio interface total roundtrip latency is 7ms. I cannot understand why I have such a huge audible latency when recording. It's unusable like that, I don't know what to try. I have the same huge latency with the VST Bass Amp inserted on the Input Track or or on the bass Audio Track.

Awesome! I have a question. I’m using a Presonus Studiolive series 3 mixer as my input interface. Can anybody explain how exactly I could use it as a control surface using the Mackie Control built into Cubase?

Go to Studio Menu - Studio Setup and click on the + sign in the upper left hand corner and select Mackie Control and set the MIDI in a nd out ports to the unit. Add 1 Mackie Control per 8 channels and set each unit to different MIDI in and out ports.

🚩When using Input Monitoring... then Cubase for sure is able to record the Audio-Data onto any track.. Is there a way to make a rev/delay effect hear without a Steinberg Audio interface?

When using direct monitoring the audio signal goes directly from input to output bypassing the audio engine and thus software effects. The UR series allows for the effects, powered by the DSP on the interface, to be utilized so there is no perceived latency much like a digital mixer. You would have to check with other interface manufacturers to see if they have this functionality.
