I´ve noticed that when in a depressed state, regulating thoughts is very hard. F.ex I think of problem "x" so much more intensely negative compared to when thinking about it in a normal state. Its like when the cloud lifts then its not really a big issue anymore. Because I can see it from multiple angles and be less reactive. But its very hard to grasp this when you are in the muffled state. I only realize afterwards, that I was kind of exaggerating in my mind.. What exactly causes this inside the brain? is it a temporary impairment in certain parts of the brain? Its kind of evident also if you observe others in a depressed state how they can't see positives.

A simple answer is that when we’re experiencing any emotion, we attend more to thoughts that are in line with how we’re feeling, because those are the thoughts that make the most sense to us at the time. If we’re sad or depressed and have sad, negative thoughts, these resonate with us and so we believe them. If we’re sad and have positive or optimistic thoughts, they don’t align with how we’re feeling, so we tend to dismiss them because they don’t make sense based on how we feel. But when we’re not sad or depressed anymore, the really negative thoughts don’t make as much sense, because they don’t reflect how we’re feeling inside, and we’re now able to see things from a more neutral perspective because our feelings aren’t dictating our thoughts anymore. In terms of what’s causing this in the brain, there’s likely an elevated cortisol response and increased activation of the amygdala region of the brain that leads us to experience negative cognitive biases, which I talk about more here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f5miZtydzsDJaWQ.html
