In this video, we tackle an important question from Zara about job hunting after obtaining the Security Plus (CC) and Certified in Cyber (CC) certifications from IC Squared. Zara is struggling to find a job despite having these credentials and seeks tips to break through.
Join Jason and Jamari as they delve into the challenges faced by entry-level professionals in the saturated job market. They discuss the significance of gaining relevant experience and the value it holds over certifications. With their combined expertise as hiring managers and industry professionals, they provide practical advice to help you succeed in your job search.
Discover valuable insights on securing internships, volunteering for charitable organizations, and leveraging networks to kickstart your experience. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of tailoring your resume with the right keywords to align with the requirements of the job you're targeting. By researching the specific skills and qualifications sought by employers in your region, you can enhance your chances of standing out from the competition.
Certifications like Security Plus play a crucial role in passing initial hiring filters, but they aren't a guarantee for landing a job. Once you secure an interview, your experience and interpersonal skills take center stage. The video highlights the three-legged stool of experience, certifications, and degrees, which collectively contribute to your employability.
To delve deeper into the hiring process and gain a comprehensive understanding of how to make yourself irresistible to cybersecurity hiring managers, Jason recommends checking out the "Irresistible" course available at Dion Training dot com slash udemy. This course covers essential topics such as resume writing, negotiation strategies, and interview techniques. By investing in this resource, you can equip yourself with the tools to navigate the cybersecurity job market successfully.
For additional free resources, Jason suggests exploring the "Your Cyber Path" podcast, co-hosted by himself and Kip Boyle. With nearly a hundred episodes available, this podcast offers valuable insights into hiring and firing processes, drawing from their extensive experience as cybersecurity hiring managers. You can find the podcast on yourcypath.com or your favorite podcast platform.
Lastly, if you're unsure about the specific cybersecurity career path that aligns with your goals, don't miss the episode titled "All the Jobs in the SOC." In this episode, they discuss various cybersecurity roles, helping you identify the right fit for your skill set and experience level.

Cybersecurity is not an entry level position...they should consider targeting it support or cloud roles...they should also look into creating portfolios and expanding their presence on social media by posting about projects they have worked on

You are not wrong! It takes a certain amount of privilege to be able to work for free. However, having a filler job while you work for free at different places like churches, nonprofits, etc. you can gain quite a lot of experience that you can then use to beef up your resume. For example, Jason used to work for free as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts and with some local churches, even though he had a full-time position paying his salary. In his case, it wasn't for gaining experience, but to give back, yet the same could be applied to folks trying to gain additional experience. The volunteer work doesn't have to be full-time, even part-time can help you out!
